Final from Shirk:

Illinois Wesleyan 70
Augustana 68

Doug Sexauer hit a baseline jumper with one second left to win it.

Next Friday in Naperville:

#2 Augustana (22-3) vs. #3 Wheaton (18-7)
#4 Illinois Wesleyan (18-7) @ #1 North Central (15-10)

I can't believe we were talking just a few weeks ago about the "20-0" or whatever Augustana team, and today they're not the conference champions!

Yes, they are. The only difference is that now they share the championship with North Central.

I do go back to that 90 team! Its been a long time coming!

I hope NCC's season ends the same way its '90 season did! :)
I'm hoping for a similar outcome as 2006!:)  Will you guys utilize a box and 1 similar to the strategy in 1990?

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm reasonably certain that Robert Brown no longer has any remaining eligibility. ;)

Quite a day for Old School, who became a dad and trumped the d3boards.com soccer moderator on a trivia question all within 24 hours. ;)

Thanks Greg!  But who can forget 1999's Champions League Final when Solskjaer scored the winner in injury time? LOL

OK, back to your regularly scheduled CCIW talk!

Everything else that happened in D3 tonight is dwarfed by what just happened in Pasadena, CA:

Caltech won a SCIAC game and broke a conference losing streak of 300-plus games.

If individual assists records were kept by the league, he'd own all of them.

Congratulations upon an absolutely phenomenal career, Steve. You were a pleasure to watch ... when you weren't playing NPU, that is. Get well soon after you have your foot operation, and best of luck to you in Europe, South America, or wherever you end up playing next season.
He would have been over 1500 pts in the CCIW with a 16 game schedule!
Ok CCIW posters, In a CCIW fantasy draft who gets taken first Steve D or Kent Raymond? As great as Steve D was, I might have to take Raymond....due to 3pt fg made and perc, ft perc, steals and rebounds!  Any thoughts!

If memory serves me, I believe the defense was employed on the sharp shooter from Matoon Mike Roy not Rob Brown. I'm pretty sure he doesn't have any eligibility either!  :)

Sorry, let me rephrase: "...and today they're not the run-away conference champions!"  NCC did the smart thing and kept their losses outside of the CCIW schedule.

Really? That's strange. Mike Roy was a good player, but Robert Brown was one of the greatest players of his CCIW era.

What time are the conference tourney games?

Also, tiebreakers in the CCIW are a headache for sure, but why is IWU the 4 and Wheaton the 3?

From the CCIW website:

Friday, February 25, 2011
#3 Wheaton vs. #2 Augustana, 5 p.m.
#4 Illinois Wesleyan vs. #1 North Central, 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, February 26, 2011
Friday's Winners, 7:30 p.m.

Tournament Seeding Explained:

Wheaton, Illinois Wesleyan & Carthage Tiebreaker
Illinois Wesleyan, Wheaton and Carthage finished in a three-way tie for third place at 9-5. Wheaton earned the No. 3 seed based on its 3-1 composite record against Carthage and Illinois Wesleyan during the regular season. The next step would be to determine which team gets the No. 4 seed, Illinois Wesleyan or Carthage. The Titans and Red Men split their season series and both teams finished 1-1 against first place Augustana and second place North Central. Illinois Wesleyan finished 1-1 against the next place team, which is Wheaton, while Carthage was 0-2 against the Thunder. This would give Illinois Wesleyan the fourth and final seed.

North Central & Augustana Tiebreaker
Both North Central and Augustana would be tied for first place at 11-3 and be declared co-champions. The tie would have to be broken to determine seeding and tournament hosting. Both teams tied the season series at 1-1 and also have finished with the same identical head-to-head records against each of the other six CCIW teams. The next tiebreaker, road record against conference schools, would also not break the tie as both teams are 5-2. The next tiebreaker, record in the last seven CCIW games, will break the tie as North Central is 6-1 while Augustana is 4-3, giving North Central the No. 1 seed and the right to host the CCIW tournament.

CCIW ALUM

Greg,

Your absolutely correct when you said Robert Brown was one of the best that ever played in the CCIW, The defense employed by IWU on that March night in 1990 was a box in one on Robert Brown, not Mike Roy. The problem was Mike Roy had his worst shooting night in the 2 years he played for the Cardinals. Coach Bridges and his staff did not want Robert to take over the game as he did the previous two games that year! Even when the Cardinals started out with the first 10 points of the game, IWU never came out of the Box in One!

This much-anticipated season started off with high spirits for the Carthage program-- ranked about preseason #6, beat the defending national champions in the first scrimmage, and nowhere to go but up...

Things did not quite pan out for Carthage Nation-bummer. Well, the young guys may come back with a vengeance and the seniors will go pro 'in something other than sports' (except, of course, for Steve D who's got some ankle-breaking jukes and free throws yet to contribute to some team.)

I am studying at Des Moines University's College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. There are 9 podiatry programs in the USA, and each year there is a big basketball tournament. Next year, Barry University in Miami is hosting-- I am sad that Steve D did not focus on natural science coursework and pursue podiatry as it would be fun to see him make some noise here. He has his head on straight, and it will be exciting to see what he does.

Well, D3 basketball is 'negative study fly', so I think I am out until 2011-2012.

Unless, I either think of a funny Milikin joke (because Milikin is the new North Park (whatever that means kinda like whatever 'Carthage Nation' means) or unless people want to discuss why I think becoming a Christian though perhaps seemingly irrelevant, is actually the most important decision one can make…

To the top half of the conference- Have fun at CCIW's and perhaps beyond!
