"A large percentage of recruit visits to CCIW games happen on Saturdays."
"It sees to me like that there are plenty of Saturday home conference games to get the recruits in."
"I aagree on all points."
"Q's comment that Saturdays are likely to be vastly more important than Tuesdays/Wednesdays sounds intuitively right to me."

Au contraire messieurs!

Lets examine TQ's assertions that a "large percentage" of CCIW recruit visits occur on Saturdays and "there are plenty of Sat. home conference games to get the recruits in," using his beloved Illinois Wesleyan Titans as an example.
The Wesleyan 2011-2012 schedule shows a TOTAL of FIVE Saturday home games, with only THREE being CCIW games. This qualifies as a "large percentage" of Saturdays games that allow "plenty" of Saturday home conference games?  ???   ???   ???
Seems more like a small percentage of games allowing a limited number of opportunities to get recruits in, especially for conference games, on Saturdays. Upon further examination, do these numbers really signify a large percentage and/or plenty of games on Saturdays. I think not.

Furthermore, the number of potential recruits any given institution may be able to host on any given Saturday night will effectively be further reduced by the fact that many HS players wouldn't be able to accept an invitation to attend a Saturday game anyway. This is due to the fact that many HS players are going to have not only a Friday night game scheduled, but one on Saturday as well. In the suburban Chicago area, a majority of HS teams, with some conference exceptions as noted, are going to have a Saturday night game as well as on on Friday anywhere from 1/3rd to 1/2 of the time. This further diminishes the percentage of the limited number of CCIW home Saturday night games a recruit may be able to attend.
Accordingly, it appears strong evidence exists to suggest the assertions that there are "plenty" of Saturday games allowing a "large percentage" of Saturday CCIW recruiting visits are fallacy rather than fact.
Oui?

While you quoted me correctly at the top of your post, you kind of twisted things below that, didn't you?  I said:

* "A large percentage of recruit visits to CCIW games happen on Saturdays."

* "It seems to me like there are plenty of Saturday home conference games to get recruits in."

I did not say that a large percentage of total games are on Saturdays...which you seem to be suggesting.

So again, I'll say...

1)  I think most recruit visits to CCIW games happen on Saturdays (which is the preference of the recruit, his family, and the coaching staff.)

2) There will still be plenty of Saturday home games to get recruits in.  Last year IWU had 3 CCIW Saturday home games (Elmhurst, Carthage, North Park).  Early in the 2010-11 basketball season, I'm sure Ron Rose and his staff picked a couple of those dates to be the big "recruiting nights."  In 2011-12 the Titans will once again have 3 CCIW Saturday home games.  Again, they'll pick a couple and start inviting recruits to those games throughout December and early January.  Same deal as 2010-11.

However, even if this is done, a new barrier is created as having both high school and college games scheduled on Tuesdays eliminates the possibility of being able to invite a male recruit to attend that evening's game.

I have to believe, though, that a large percentage of recruit visits to CCIW games happen on Saturdays...when the kid and the parents have plenty of time to do the campus tour, etc.  And when it comes down to it, don't coaches prefer to have kids in for Saturday games anyway (when the crowds are bigger and atmosphere a little better)?  It seems to me like there are plenty of Saturday home conference games to get recruits in.

This Tuesday deal is going to force CCIW coaches to adjust their normal recruiting schedule, but honestly, I think they'll adjust and work around it.  They're a crafty bunch.

Quote from: Titan Q on April 24, 2011, 06:39:52 PM
Also keep in mind, there are several very successful Division III coaches that rarely, if ever, get to see their recruits play a high school game -- Mark Edwards (Wash U) comes to mind.  Yet these coaches still find a way to evaluate, build relationships, and land great recruits.

CCIW coaches will still have the Friday games next year, and all kinds of other ways to get the job done.

I agree on all points. I think that the bottom line on this move by the league is that it's an inconvenience for CCIW men's basketball coaches, but hardly a crisis. I'd be shocked if it has any kind of impact at all in terms of whether or not any local kid in particular ends up attending a CCIW school.
Disagree with AndOne (again).  The scheduling change is no big deal.  Parity in terms of women and men sport schedules long over due.  Recruit scouting is often done by alumni; and, assistant coaches.  Head coaches don't usually get involved until there is a mutual interest expressed.  As for campus visits, both coaches and recruits will 'find a way'.

He's thin, but not unusually so. Google it and you'll find tons of guys listed at 6' 9", 190, including one of the top HS players in the nation, Anthony Davis of Perspectives Charter in Chicago:

Now Terrence Green as a freshman at Augie--HE was thin: 6' 9", 164!

Given how often I mention him on this website, it's been jokingly suggested to me that I should make Harps' basketball-reference.com page my computer homepage.

Mark was a freshman at NPC two years after Michael Harper had graduated, so I don't know if he ever saw Harps. But, yeah, the man was skinny. Harps had the metabolism of a hummingbird. He did everything he could, and more, to put on weight; aside from his lifting, he would spend two hours eating in the dining hall every night. He'd have three glasses of milk on his tray at dinner, and he used to bring a jar of Nutriment powdered protein supplement with him to the dining hall. While he ate he'd spoon more Nutriment powder into his milk. It astonished me that in spite of all this he never seemed to gain an ounce.

He's still a trim, fine-looking man now in middle age, but he certainly isn't 190 pounds anymore. Alas, those of us who had hummingbird metabolisms in our youth tend to discover sometime in our twenties or thirties that the hummingbird has died and been replaced by a three-toed sloth. ;)

On IWU recruit Drew Blumenshine...

Once again IWU beats out Augie for a targeted recruit. Atleast it wasn't a position of great need for Augie.

This crap is getting old "Augiefan" -- You pull this stuff every year with Augie recruiting and it is just makes me sick.  While IWU has been good, Augie has won five Regular season titles and three tournament titles in the last 10 years -- Even after your yearling whining about not getting a "Targeted recruit".  So relax and see how things develop over the course of four years instead of immediately waving the white flag you turncoat!!

Fontbonne University release on their new head basketball coach Steve Schafer, former assistant at NPU from 2004-2009. As most of us here know, Schafer was an assistant at Benedictine the last 2 years. He was one of the finalists for the vacant NPU top job, but never really had much, if any, chance at the job due to one of NPU's requirements being that their new head coach have previous head coaching experience which Schafer did not until now.
