Anderson beat NPU 56-54 tonight. NPU missed a 3 pointer at the buzzer, after AU missed two FTs with 11 secs. to go to keep the game in doubt.

Augie struggles to win 80-72 at UW Oshkosh. Perhaps a bit of a wake up call after 2 easy wins. Voiles with 21. Any road win against a WIAC team is a good one, but Oshkosh is not likely to be in the top echelon of this year's WIAC squads.

IWU 77
Monmouth 49
Final

Good overall game for the Titans.  Very balanced.  Reed with 15 and 10, Davis with 11 and 8, Oswald with 10.  Eliud Gonzalez didn't play, and Zimmer had a very bad shooting night for him, 2-8 overall, 1-7 from 3.

Wheaton beats Manchester 82 - 52.  Game really wasn't that close.

Graduation must have really been harsh to Manchester.  Not at all what Wheaton faced last year.
Men's and Women's teams both defeated Spartan teams by 30 pts. tonight.

I thought Manchester would be good this year with HCAC POY Jordan Moss and 6-10 Jason Spindler returning from a conference championship team.  But the Spartans have really struggled after their opening win vs Concordia-Chicago, falling 66-43 to Illinois College, 76-73 to MacMurray, and 82-52 to Wheaton (in a game Wheaton led by 40 at one point).

Wheaton continues to steamroll all opponents.  Their stats are impressive...

http://athletics.wheaton.edu/custompages/mbball/mbbstats/teamcume.htm#TEAM.IND

* Scoring 86.5 per game, allowing 54.8

* Shooting .543, opponents .380

* Shooting .421 from beyond the arc (32-76)

* 73 assists to 39 turnovers (opponents 38 assists to 70 turnovers)

Individually we knew Tim McCrary would have great numbers, and he does so far (18.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 4.3 apg).  But the big news through 4 games has to be the play of Aaron Garriott - 16.5 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 2.5 apg in 22 minutes per game.  Before his knee problems there was no doubt Garriott would be a great player in the CCIW, but he missed two seasons.  If Garriott continues playing at this level, it makes Wheaton really hard to match up with.

I think here in the very early going, Wheaton deserves to be considered the biggest challenger to Augie.  North Central was picked 2nd, and I certainly had them 2nd coming in, but I'm starting to think the Thunder have more weapons and depth than North Central.

IWU's season boxscore, through the 4-0 start, is impressive too...

http://www.iwusports.com/custompages/MBB/MBB2012/HTML/teamcume.htm#TEAM.IND

* Scoring 89.2 per game, allowing 63.5

* Shooting .511, opponents .376

* Rebound margin per game = +14

* 77 assists to 56 turnovers (opponents 32 assists, 75 turnovers)

IWU has four players averaging double digit points - 6-5 F Victor Davis (12.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg), 6-6 F John Koschnitzky (12.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg), 6-7 F Kevin Reed (11.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 2.0 apg), and 6-5 G Jordan Zimmer (10.0 ppg).  And that production is in just 20-22 minutes per game of playing time due to 3 blowouts.

In the early going I am excited about IWU's defensive play and rebounding, which the coaching staff thought coming in would be much improved from recent years.  I'm also encouraged by IWU's offensive production, which was a big question coming into 2011-12.  I do think the Titans have a ways to go on that side of the ball though.

The next two games will tell us a little more about this IWU team - @ Ripon Nov 25, @ UW-Whitewater Nov 30.  For different reasons I suspect both games will be tough.

Bob or anyone from IWU, any word on live video this year for basketball since we had it for football?

I believe so.  For this Sat's game at Ripon, the Ripon website shows live video of the game
at 3:00 p.m.

Just thought to check the NCC/Aurora score and was shocked to see...

Aurora 94
North Central 82

http://northcentralcardinals.com/custompages/MBK/mbk1112/Mbk03.htm

Aurora lost to Augie by 34, and Trine by 15.

NCC only had one bench player who logged more than 10 minutes - Charlie Rosenberg (16).  PG Kevin Gillespie played 40 minutes and Derek Raridon 39.

After seeing this, I don't think there is any question Wheaton should be considered a stronger contender to Augie than NCC (as of right now, in the early going).

My best guess is that there will be video streaming for the conference games.

Beating Concordia (IL) is no big deal, especially when you do so in your own gym. I saw the Cougars this past week; they're terrible.

I was speaking with a local D3 head coach last night, and he and I realized that we had both came to that same conclusion about Wheaton being Augie's biggest CCIW challenger this season, not NCC. And this was before I saw the NCC vs. Aurora score.

Not that I'm writing off the Cardinals or anything, but Wheaton just seems loaded this season, while the losses of Burchett and Hallstein really look like they've set NCC back.

I'm actually somewhat encouraged by this result, given everything that I said yesterday. I honestly thought that NPU would lose that game by double digits.

I'm off to tape an interview of Dylan Howard now for halftime of Saturday afternoon's inaugural 2011-12 NPU hoops webcast. It should be interesting.

Manchester was picked 4th in the HCAC behind Transylvania, Hanover and Rose-Hulman fwiw.   From looking at them a week or so ago they lost 3 or 4 regular contributors to last years team.  They have seven Fr and three Soph's.
