Great job by the CCIW tonight!! If this is a "down" year I'll take it every year.  Mr. GS-yea Duke-one of my all-time favorites, along with UCLA and MSU. BTW-odds on a possible NCC/Wheaton rematch now? Good luck to everyone next week-end.

More likely to see IWU play NCC, and then IWU play Wheaton, if Wheaton keeps winning.

FINAL   :)   :)   :)

NCC------72
Wash U--68

If I'm reading the PBP correctly, Landon Gamble picked up his fourth foul with 16:18 left in the second half, and Aaron Tiknis picked up his fourth foul with 13:12 left. Neither fouled out of the game. Since there's only one big who gets tick off the bench, Charlie Rosenberg -- and he fouled out with three minutes and change to go -- that's a lot of minutes played by two guys who were each one foul away from disqualification. Impressive that they stayed in the game and proved pivotal down the stretch in the win.

Very impressive. Gamble actually missed much of the 1st half after picking up his 3rd foul. I'd say NCC's foul trouble was a combination of some "poor," nonsensical fouls on the part of the players, and some questionable calls by the refs. The problem was inconsistency by the refs. A situation would not be a foul one time down the floor, and the same defensive play would be a foul the next time. Despite being in foul trouble, Aaron scored 6 of his 12 points and got 4 of his 6 rebounds in the 2nd half, and Landon finished with a double-double, making 8 of his 12 points and pulling down 8 of his 10 boards in the 2nd half. Todd Raridon would often go offense/defense in his subbing with Rosenberg in on defense and Gamble on offense. Charlie, aggressively looking to score early, scored all 8 of his points in the 1st half, then concentrated in stopping the opposition in the 2nd. Derek Raridon also stepped it up in the 2nd half when the chips were down, scoring 10 of his 15 points in the 2nd stanza.

However, the #1 star of the show tonight was senior PG Kevin Gillespie who played ALL 40 minutes and scored a game high 22 points to go along with 5 rebounds. Kevin hit 5 of 7 from the field, including 4 of 6 from distance, and went 8 of 9 from the line. Senior leadership personified both by his play and verbally, praising his teammates when deserving, and kicking some butt when necessary.

I doubt many people would have IWU over Hope at home.

Tiknis and Gamble, and Rosenberg for that matter, played well with four fouls.  It was their play prior to that must have had the commentator complaining.  Goldthree should have fouled out too.  The officials clearly had one goal in mind: keep the fouls even and they did.

North Central came to play and did a great job defensively on our best player.  And all Washington University needed to do was shoot their already low season average on free throws to be in the game, so we have no excuses.  But we will have a lot of fans thinking that one less phantom travel (it was comical that Coach Raridon was calling for parity on the travels) or maybe Klimek gets something for his efforts underneath...

Nope. And likely only a few more than picked IWU would have picked NCC over Wash U at home. Just mainly us die-hards.

No, it was everything that happened in the last four minutes or so that had the commentator complaining. Seriously. The guy just would not stop whining about how every call was going against the Bears and for the Cardinals. He even used the word "conspiracy" in the last minute of the game, saying that the refs were deliberately trying to keep North Central players from fouling out. (His partner then pointed out that NCC's Charlie Rosenberg had already fouled out of the game.) I understand homerism from broadcasters. It doesn't bother me that much, and I even expect it to a certain degree. But that guy was well over the line; he was simply unprofessional in the way that he called out the refs on just about every single whistle that went against the Bears down the stretch.

Nice to know that he didn't use up all those shots from downtown on Wheaton. I am sure WashU fans fully understand our pain now. Hah.

I wish I could have seen him play, I love clutch players like this.

My wisecrack wasn't aimed at Duke. It was aimed at minor league pro basketball Division I basketball. ;)
Hahahaha-touche!! but they don't but D3 on TV and they stopped showing high school state finals on tv as well. Gotta get my bball fix somewhere! :)
I used to be a superhater of DI, but since my brother got his third masters at Duke and I got to see a couple games in Cameron, which is a pretty epic old arena full of a pretty smart student body, I can't really be a hater anymore. The last live basketball games I've seen were at Duke, and they have their own sort of charm. I am sure I will get sucked into Baylor football too, eventually. Anyway, I think it's probably about as legit to be a fan of Duke than a lot of shabby academic D3 schools out there. (I am totally never getting my HoFer status back now :-X )

I disagree. As I said, I thought that the Cards had a very good chance going in against Wash U. That was far, far less of an upset than IWU over Hope. I think that NCC vs. Wash U was pretty close to a pick'em.

And, in actuality, the game was pretty evenly called. NCC was whistled for 23 fouls and WU for 27. The +4 for WU can logically be attributed to WU's intentional fouling in the later stages of the game in an attempt to both stop the clock, and to catch up. WU had 13 TOs, and NCC 14. TOs are another component of the officiating as many TOs are "called" errors such as steps and carrying the ball.

But when your team loses a close one-it's never called "evenly" LOL

Oh, one other thing before I call it a night:

Congrats to North Central upon reaching the Sweet Sixteen. This marks the first time ever that the Cardinals have advanced to the second weekend of the dance.

I am sure that was annoying.  No excuses for that either, though the color commentator is probably a student.  Our resident announcer can address that if he wants.  But what he will probably not say is what I believe to be the truth: Washington University got jobbed in that game.

The fact that the game was called evenly is not proof that the calls were made consistently on both sides.

I have nothing but respect for the CCIW.  Almost all the best wins and toughest losses I have seen over the years have come at the hands of the CCIW.  There were poor calls on both sides.  But honestly, had the calls been made consistently on both sides, the result probably would have been different.
