Anthony Burgess wrote 1985 (pub in 1978) as a tribute to Orwell's 1984. Who knew?

Q and I are trading chances to unveil recruits for each others schools this year......

http://ilprepbullseye.com/D2_Commitments.html

Reliable sources tell us that Illinois Wesleyan University and Head Coach Ron Rose have secured a commitment from 6'6 combo forward Ryan Coyle from St. Francis High School in Wheaton, IL. Coyle is an excellent shooter and has good length. He was instrumental in leading St. Francis to the Class 3A sectionals at Glenbard South High School, averaging well over 20 ppg in the process.

Oops, again!  At least a mildly successful commentary on 1984, plus a novella.

But if anyone wrote 1986, I can't find it! 8-)

Reliable sources tell us that Illinois Wesleyan University and Head Coach Ron Rose have secured a commitment from 6'6 combo forward Ryan Coyle from St. Francis High School in Wheaton, IL. Thanks Scott.  That blurb must have been added later - I'm pretty sure it wasn't part of the original entry.

If this is true, Ron Rose is a very happy man right now.  I've been hearing the name "Ryan Coyle" since about October - this was one of Rose's top recruiting priorities.  The last I heard IWU was in an intense battle with a host of different small colleges, at different levels, for Coyle.  I know he had just visited Augustana recently.

Bullseye calls 6-6 Coyle a "combo forward" - he's actually a G/F.  And that is what makes him such a valuable Division III recruit in my opinion - a 6-6 kid that can play either the 2 or the 3 (he would seem to project out to a 3 in the CCIW to me).  Here is a video of the Wheaton St. Francis @ Wheaton Academy game this season (the full game) and it's clear that Coyle, #14 in white, plays the perimeter, and even brings the ball up the floor quite a bit.  He has really good handles for a 6-6 guy, including a great left hand.  (I don't think that game was Coyle's best, but I still think you can see his skill set.)

Coyle (15.1 ppg, 5.7 rpg this year) finished his HS career as the all-time leading scored at Wheaton St. Francis (1193 points). He made the 1st Team of the Daily Herald and Kane County Chronicle all-area teams..

The other thing attractive about Coyle is that he is described as a tremendous "team guy".  Whenever I talk recruiting with Ron Rose, he mentions character and other intangibles extensively.  He seems to absolutely love the "team first" kind of kids that his 2011-12 varsity rotation was full of.

Let me stress, I can't confirm this Coyle news - just commenting based on the Bullseye blurb.

Here is the full game video of Ryan Coyle's 26 point, 12 rebound performance vs Crane in the 3A sectional title (#14 in blue)...

He just seems like a very versatile kid - good ball handler, good passer, good shooter, good rebounder.  Comfortable on the perimeter and comfortable down low.  Seems to be able to play the 2, 3, or 4 based on matchups.

I'm excited about this recruit - Coyle seems like a great fit for Ron Rose's system, and with that really talented group returning.  He should be a very good player at IWU.

Meanwhile, St. Francis senior Ryan Coyle confirmed Friday that he recently selected D-III Illinois Wesleyan. The versatile forward chose Wesleyan  – a D-III Final Four qualifier this season – over Augustana and Lake Forest.

Very good quality recruit.  Good job Ron Rose and staff.  Coyle's skill set a good fit; and, probably allows him to get some early varsity minutes (and/or more JV time) at a spot(s) that might not be his ultimate position.
