I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

I have made inquires as to the possibility/names of any additional Carthage recruits. I'll let the board know if I get any  news.  ;)

I was on vacation for the last few weeks so I've been having to get caught back up on the d3boards.

Any news on Carthage recruits ... I have not been able to find out anything?

On 4/4, I sent a note to Carthage SID Steve Marovich inquiring as to possible Carthage recruits other than Sean Valentine. A copy of the note is posted below.

Dear Mr. Marovich,

I am a CCIW basketball fan, and am wondering about Carthage's basketball recruits for the 2012-2013 season.
The only CC recruit I have heard about so far is Sean Valentine, a 6'3" guard from Prairie Ridge HS.
I was wondering if any other recruits/transfers have yet committed to Carthage for next season.
Thanks very much.

Unfortunately, I never rec'd a reply, or even an acknowledgement. Silly me thought a Sports Information Director was in the business of providing information about and promoting his institution's athletes, and might be a good source. However, I guess Mr. Marovich is currently quite busy with his sports information duties, especially now that school is out for the summer.  ;)

His job is primarily to provide information to the media and Carthage fans, not another team's fans. Also, since most SIDs work about 60-80 hours a week during the school year, they often take some actual time off in the offseason.

I've worked in Sports Information offices, and there's always plenty to do in the summer as well. Yes, the workload is likely lighter, but we really should stop perpetuating the myth that people who work for colleges and universities just close up shop in the summer. Just because the students are gone doesn't mean we are

There are some sports that you can't get rid of if you want to stay in the CCIW.  From the CCIW Constitution:

Section 2: Core Sports. In the men's program, every member of the Conference must play every other Conference member in football, basketball and baseball and must participate in the Conference (meet) program of at least five other sports. In the women's program, every member of the Conference must play every other Conference member in volleyball, basketball and softball and must participate in the Conference (meet) program of at least
five other sports.

I really miss that information being on the website.  They don't have the individual sport handbooks either.  I found those resources extremely useful.

His job is primarily to provide information to the media and Carthage fans, not another team's fans. Also, since most SIDs work about 60-80 hours a week during the school year, they often take some actual time off in the offseason.

Furthermore, some SID's don't even get information on recruits from some of their coaches until the next school year begins and the students are enrolled. Not every college sends out press releases about recruits "committing" or attending their respective college or play a specific sport.

I am not surprised you didn't get a response... it just isn't something SID's are normally tasked with being responsible for :).

Pat, with all due respect, regardless of the fact that "most SIDs work about 60-80 hours a week during the school year," the last day of classes at Carthage was 5/13. Its now 6/15. He has had over a month to decompress. True?  :)

And, Dave, as far as my type of inquiry being "something SIDs are (not) normally tasked with being responsible for," it isn't like he is presently overburdened with work. A review of the Carthage athletic web site today reveals the last five releases from the SID office were 6/11, 6/10, 6/8, 5/29, and 5/24. Besides, during the course of your business career, have you not personally, in the interest of good external or internal customer service or just to do something nice, done something that you were not "normally tasked with being responsible for"? I'd guess yes.   ;)

My inquiry was made in the spirit of the fact that recent discussions about the various basketball recruiting classes in the CCIW had only revealed one known recruit for the concerned school, As such, I wrote to someone I thought might be able to shed some additional light on the subject. I think my choice of who to write to was a logical one.

Additionally, it was my intent to share the information I hoped to receive, with the room. Is this not in keeping with the stated reason D3Hoops was created namely:
"We run D3hoops.com to serve as a national news source for Division III men's and women's basketball. First as students, then later as SIDs and members of the media covering Division III, we were frustrated that the larger news organizations ignored everything above Division I. We publish D3hoops.com (and D3football.com) to give much-deserved publicity to the fine student-athletes who compete at the highest level of pure amateur basketball."

While a courtesy reply would have been proper, there's not an SID on the planet that would release recruiting information to a random fan's email inquiry unless that information was already public. I think you were dreaming if you actually thought he'd send you a list of names, heights and hometowns. Maybe during football season you can ask him for an injury report. :)

It's also very possible that the SID doesn't have a clue who the men's basketball team has recruited for next year. He's got football and 8 other fall sports to plan for before basketball season starts to show up on the radar.

I will bet that he is filling out the questionnaire for Kickoff 2012 that Pat C. sent him.

We don't send questionnaires for Kickoff. We interview the coaches. That's what separates us from the other preseason products.

AndOne -- Just Bill knows what he's talking about. It's barely proper for you to email an opposing school's SID for information and it's even less proper for you to then slam him on the message board.

I wouldn't even say e-mailing the SID was improper. Just naive. Trashing him on a message board is certainly improper.

dahlby

SID's get their information from the coaches...if the coach doesn't want prospect names released, the SID won't publish anything until the prospect is enrolled and practicing with the team. Philosophies/policies on this topic usually are directed from the AD. Some schools want the exposure, while others choose to play it safe. Either way, if you don't like the school's philosophy, address the AD or coach. The SID is the messenger.....so don't shoot him. Sid's are usually overworked and underpaid. If you have doubts, follow him/her around for a season and see for yourself.

I need to agree with Pat and Just Bill on this one.

Well, the names haven't been a secret any other year, dahlby. But If thats the new policy, I can accept it. I do however think it would have been nice for him to take just a few seconds to reply to my note even if it was just to say 'we don't release that info." Thats all.

The National Wrestling Coaches Association would surely see this as yet another sign of wrestling's resurgence.  Which means more schools will add the sport.  Which means the CCIW will make it a mandatory part of the package.  Which means more men in tights (sorry... men wearing the required uniform).  And, inevitably, the dawn of a new flagship in the Coleman media empire... d3wrestling.com.

If we build it, they will come...

That's why I said "barely proper" for the first one. Naive is good, though.
