Recently graduated North Central PG Kevin Gillespie, NCC starting 2G Vince Kmiec, and Wheaton backup center Chase Almen have been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court for the just completed 2011-2012 season.

The Honors Court salutes varsity student-athletes who have maintained at least a 3.2 GPA after at least 2 years of study. Nationally, 429 men's basketball players qualified for inclusion on the Court, including only 162 from Division III.

Gillespie, Kmiec, and Almen were the only CCIW players so honored. Congrats.

been a while since i've posted.  just wanted to post on page 2012 of cciw chat.  what a tribute to the loyalty of cciw hoops fans -- and also to the diarrheic writings of mr. gregory sager.   ;D

Schedule surfing this afternoon and I can't help notice Wheaton's Lee Pfund Classic has a very different format that what I can remember.  Has this happened before?

Nov. 15  Capital at Wheaton
Nov. 16  Capital vs Alma
Nov. 17  Alma at Wheaton

I have Capital tabbed as the logical favorite to win the OAC so that's not exactly an easy game on opening night for Wheaton.

With 3 teams rather than 4, improvisation is a necessity.  :)

Maybe Owen Handy could bring his new Anderson squad back to his old stomping grounds if it's a light weekend for them.

There have been a lot of three-team tournaments in recent years. Everyone wants to host tournaments, it seems, and there aren't enough teams to go around.

OT:  Wheaton College, in Illinois, Sues Over Contraceptive-Insurance Rule

Cut from the Chronicle for Higher Education

Wheaton College has filed suit against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, joining a growing group of religious institutions that is protesting the Obama administration's rule that requires most employers to cover contraceptives as part of their health-insurance plans. The Illinois evangelical college's lawsuit, filed on Wednesday, says the rule violates the institution's religious beliefs. The complaint adds that the rule creates uncertainty about Wheaton's ability to offer health insurance to its employees beyond 2012, thus placing the college at a "competitive disadvantage" in its efforts to recruit and retain employees. The college is calling its lawsuit the "first-ever partnership between Catholic and evangelical institutions to oppose the same regulation in the same court."

On this issue, they are in agreement. Good for them in taking a stand. More Christian/Catholic universities and colleges need to step up and join in.

Actually I just meant had the 3 team thing happened in this particular tournament.  It is something I've seen a few times.  Its a pretty good idea I think.

In that format, the host team (Wheaton) has the advantage of a day off between games, while the other two teams have to play on consecutive days.

If one of the visiting teams had the day off they would also have an extra day of travel (lodging/food) costs.

kiko, our statements are both true; neither contradicts the other.

I'm not suggesting otherwise.  Just one factor that may have played a role in the scheduling choices that were made.

Refurbishing of the Gregory Arena basketball court floor in North Central's Merner Field House, commonly referred to as "The Hangar," is underway. When completed, the new floor will be sort of a light blonde color as opposed to the long-term yellowish color, and feature a block NC at mid court, 'North Central College' lettering inside the north sideline, and 'CARDINALS' along the baselines, similar to the styling ( http://yfrog.com/z/kfvnvtjj) on the new football field turf which was installed last summer.

It can be pretty cool depending on the teams. I definitely think it's better than having a non-D3 team fill it out.
