Saw a car near Lansing, Michigan, yesterday with Anderson (Ind.) University and Wheaton (Ill.) College stickers on the back window.

Refurbishing of the Gregory Arena basketball court floor in North Central's Merner Field House, commonly referred to as "The Hangar," is underway. When completed, the new floor will be sort of a light blonde color as opposed to the long-term yellowish color, and feature a block NC at mid court, 'North Central College' lettering inside the north sideline, and 'CARDINALS' along the baselines, similar to the styling ( http://yfrog.com/z/kfvnvtjj) on the new football field turf which was installed last summer.
That will look good! are they taking out the old indoor track as well?

There have been a lot of three-team tournaments in recent years. Everyone wants to host tournaments, it seems, and there aren't enough teams to go around.

Actually I just meant had the 3 team thing happened in this particular tournament.  It is something I've seen a few times.  Its a pretty good idea I think.

It can be pretty cool depending on the teams. I definitely think it's better than having a non-D3 team fill it out.
depends on the non-D3.  Calvin and Hope seem to have a good thing going with their NAIA rivals and teams like Judson, Trinity International, William Penn or Viterbo can put together good squads.

Good thing from a basketball perspective.  Let's see the best competition possible during the non-conference season.

Playing the best competition might help you when you get into the tourney, but with this stupid in region stuff, it doesn't help you get into the dance. They need to change that. I think it's silly, I don't know all the reasons for the in region criteria, but I do believe it will change soon.

Greetings.

Basically, there are two groups of teams that contend for playoff bids, and the coach needs to figure out where his team is.

If you are a solid contender, then the great in-region record may help with seeding, or even hosting, or a Pool C bid.  Otherwise you are going to need to win the conference.

I will be surprised if the "In-region" stuff goes away. It is one of the major components to being D-III.

Dave 'd-mac' McHugh

In-region is basically a university presidents-pushed issue. There is an effort to keep D3 regional for many reasons, primarily because of cost issues of traveling and trying to keep schools on somewhat of an even playing field (schools that can travel across the country versus those who don't have that kind of budget).

That being said, the regional side of things will take on some changes in the future. The first is the NCAA is making a whole-hearted effort to reallign the regions to make them a bit more balanced. The second is that in the future, all games will count as long as a school plays at least 70% (though, not sure if that is the exact number) of their games in-region (which most of those games will be counted thanks to conference schedules). I believe that later takes place in the '12-'13 season and the former is coming, but I was told the work went back to the drawing board due to some changes of direction from presidents (one of the things they wanted is that conferences all be in the same region - something I completely disagree with and has caused many of the problems; remember, conference games are already counted as regional games, so being in different regions isn't that big a deal).

Thanks Dave, I also was told things are going to change, but as with most things, it's going to take a little time. IWU as well as other teams changed the way the schedule teams now, mainly because of the in region rankings. We travel back to Hope, win or lose it might not count as much as say beating (no names here), a lesser in region team with a bad record.

strictly speaking it doesn't count because its not in-region for either team under any criteria.  The committee might "look at it", but since we have zero transparency how do we know what they will and won't take into account when it comes to games like this.

also the game is in Orlando this year,  but we knew what you meant  :)

Its both Dave, every MIAA schedule posted thus far except for Kalamazoo has an NAIA opponent on it.

We actually travel to hope, but it's in the 13/14 season.

Some of the Calvin people have put forward a third reason for playing at least one non-D3 opponent in particular (Grace Bible), which is that it is a beneficial and neighborly gesture aimed at fostering relations with a nearby Christian school.

I think that the bigger reason why university presidents have emphasized regional play, at least from everything I've ever read, is that discouraging long-distance travel is conducive to keeping student-athletes on campus and avoiding missed class time. (Of course, the irony is that the most academically prestigious league in D3, the UAA, is a plane-and-hotel league that forces its student-athletes to miss classes during league play, although each school takes steps to mitigate the deleterious impact of in-season travel upon its student-athletes.)

Yes, Gregory, I should have continued to point that out as well... academics.

Maybe the D3 presidents should applaud the MIAA for scheduling teams nearby regardless of their affiliation if they're so concerned about travel.

Did the regional rules come before the 25 game limited schedule?  With so few non-conference games and the seeming majority of them taking place on weekends or school holidays, how much class time would really be missed if they got rid of the regions?
