DP, instead of calling him "Ike", you should've nicknamed him "Mensch". ;)

Quote from: markerickson on March 07, 2013, 03:26:58 PMI find it kind of odd that Skokie's Niles North HS currently offers more sections of Hebrew than any other foreign language and does not offer Greek or Latin.  However, I don't think the varsity boys basketball team has a single Jew.  I went to their game last night against top-seeded Maine South.  NN's star, Malachi Nix, passed NPU alum Nick Williams as the program's all-time leading scorer earlier this year.  (Williams made a pre-game presentation after his scoring record had been broken.)  Nix, who scored 39 points in the regional final last week against Loyola in Loyola's own gym (30 in the second half), finished with 18 points en route to a 45-44 victory against Maine South.

I'm trying to get Malachi to go to North Park.

So are Tom Slyder and Cordell Henry.

How could a kid named Malachi not be Jewish?

Does he look Jewish to you?

(If he came to NPU, I think that Malachi Nix would be the coolest name in CCIW basketball history -- cooler even than C.J. Goldthree. Malachi Nix ... it sounds like the name of a secret agent or of a private detective out of a '40s film noir.)

First of all, Malachi Nix is an awesome name and would certainly make the Palmer All-MIAC Freshman name team in Minnesota.  :)

Uh, is the Old Testament really neglected that much? Guys, the book of Malachi isn't just in the Jewish scriptures, it's in your Bible too!

Unless you think it inappropriate to name kids with OT names... (David, Joseph, Jacob, Aaron, Adam, Jonathan, Benjamin, Caleb, Seth, Jesse, Rachel, Naomi, Samuel, Michael, I could go on!)

I think serious consideration has to be given to Joscar Demby as one of the coolest CCIW names.

To me, a Joscar Demby sounds like a really, really low production number, imported, hand-made sports car that James Bond wishes he could own.

Elijah is Malachi's younger brother.  (I talked to Elijah during halftime last night.)

Heh, you're right.

Q: ... please put that down. That's very dangerous. Now, do pay attention, 007 ...

Bond: What's this, then?

Q: This, 007, is the Joscar Demby 44. The most sophisticated motorcar Q Division has ever devised. Standard five-speed manual transmission, 3929 cc V-12 engine, and the most interesting feature is ... do step back, 007 ... the lasers it shoots from the headlamps ...

Bond: Lasers?

Q: One never knows when lasers could come in handy, do they?

Bond: Quite.

Greg:  I don't think you will find a post of mine concerning split pea soup.  I think someone commented, knowing that I live in Skokie, which at one point had more Holocaust survivors per capita than any community in the nation, has a large large Jewish presence.

Earlier in 2013 I visited the Holocaust Museum and Education Center to watch the world premier of Skokie: Invaded, But Not Forgotten.  The movie focused on the group of neo-Nazis that wanted to march in Skokie in the late 1970s.  The Illinois chapter of the ACLU, led by a Jew, represented the head of the "social movement."  The movie had lots of archival footage and interviewed survivors and the ACLU attorneys who are now at least 75 years old.  WTTW has aired the movie since.  I recommend the movie (59 minutes).

I find it kind of odd that Skokie's Niles North HS currently offers more sections of Hebrew than any other foreign language and does not offer Greek or Latin.

I grew up in Skokie and graduated from Niles East in late 60's (of 16 Candles fame) and what you describe as lack of Jewish players on the teams was very common in these schools back then too.  My high school was about 90% Jewish and had 2000+ studnets.  I don't want to offend anyone, but myself and many of my friends observed that the Jewish students in our school really excelled at individual sports like swimming, gymnastics, baseball, tennis, wrestling, etc.  On the other side, they were usually a small part of basketball and football teams.

Gregory Sager

Basketball is not a sport whose past is as richly chronicled and celebrated in America as, say, baseball, so a lot of people aren't aware of the fact that the sport was once dominated by Jewish players.

In doing a little research, I read somewhere last night, that some East coast teams played basketball using a cage until many years later than teams in other areas.

I couldn't help but think what would happen when a non-cage team happened to schedule a game against a cage team.

Talk about a home court advantage!

Get in boys!

I feel NCC matches up very well with the defending champs of UWW..

UWW should truly be no match up for the size & strength of NC. They might have a bunch of offensive stars that NCC must defend but they have shown the capability to lock down some very good players. I would like to see UWW guard NCC.

I see NCC getting the 'W' in Lisle and hopefully getting another game vs IWU at the Hangar.

.... If the titans can pull one out vs the mighty WashU

I'm all for an all-CCIW matchup in the Sweet Sixteen, in the Hangar.

Good luck to all the CCIW teams on Saturday night.  Some serious serious opposition for all.
