Dortch's "hounding Aboona all night" a bit over the top as he only played 14 minutes.  Besides Aboona not a real active PG - watched about 30 minutes of the game and didn't see him in the paint once.

I'm watching the On Demand from the game last night.  Color man "Coach K" makes the late Ron Santo sound like Vic Scully in terms of broadcasting objectivity.

On the big Ziemnik 3-pointer, he just starts yelling, "no, no, no, no, no!!"  It was funny, in a Ron Santo or Hawk Harrelson sort of way.

I just watched the last 8 minutes of the game and thought the color guy was perfectly fine.  I agree that he sounded more like a college radio color guy vs. a tv color guy (in terms of being more one-sided) but watch a Bulls broadcast sometime with Stacey King's "Too Big Too Strong Too Fast Too Good!" or all the other homer stuff he yells.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeKSm3ojjp8

They've even developed a sound board to play all of his over-excited exclamations http://www.nba.com/bulls/stacey-king-soundboard.html

I think the glasses were WashU colored but the spirt and compliments for both teams were there.

Another example - 37:00 mark on the player.

Kevin Reed travels at the top of the key.  As the whistle blows, color guy yells, "Yes!  Yes!"  Then, of course, he goes into the over-the-top "Kevin Reed has some of the worst footwork that I've seen" thing.  (Which, incidentally, if you ask Ron Rose what makes Kevin Reed a good player, he will quickly point to his footwork - http://www.iwuhoops.com/preview12-13.html.)

The Ron Santo/Hawk Harrelson-like shouting was my biggest beef with the guy's color commentary style as I watched the replay, but I also think his hometown bias went beyond normal standards for a non-student broadcaster.

It's the kind of broadcaster that really gets under your skin if your team is on the other side of it.  That's probably the bottom line.

I'll never forget the late Art Kimball telling me over lunch at Schooners, when he originally asked me to be his color guy, "Q, if you want to be a fan, stay in the bleachers.  But if you really want to be a broadcaster we can make this work."

A sequence from shortly after Ziemnik's big 3 that really stood out once I watched the game again this morning...

(2:08:20)

Down 2, Wash U's Chris Klimek, who was 0-1 from 3 on the season at that point, takes a 3-pointer from the left wing with 2:33 to play.  It wasn't even a shot clock situation - there were 25 seconds left.

IWU rebounds the Klimek air ball, pushes it up the floor, and Ziemnik converts the "and one" at 2:25 to put the Titans up 5.

I know Klimek was just trying to make a play, but for a guy who hasn't made a 3-pointer all season to take that shot...well, I guess you just have to question what the heck he was thinking.  As he squared up for the shot I remember saying out loud to Matt Hoder, "What's he doing?"

There were a few uncharacteristic situations like that...mostly some unforced errors that produced empty possessions that came back to haunt the Bears.

Jay, we are in for more of these IWU/Wash U battles in the next 12 months I suspect.  From the regular rotations the Titans lose only Reed, and the Bears only Hoener and Burnett.

Looking forward to more matchups of the Titans and Bears.

Great conversations this morning...as Q said last night, where would we be as D3 fans without a place like this to congregate?

The references to my partner yelling "NO NO" when Ziemnik slipped another dagger into the basket reminded me that I almost laughed out loud during the broadcast when he shouted that.  Knowing that there were legions of Titans fans that were shouting "YES YES YES" in response.  I think after I listen to the audio, there will be some moments of hyperbole that we can iron out...but I don't want to make massive changes in our styles.  Our fans very much enjoy what we do, I enjoy working with him, and the fans are paying the freight for us to be on the air.

I look forward to broadcasting many more IWU-WashU battles in the future...those are among the highlights of each season for me, because of the passionate fan bases for both programs, and there is usually a lot more at stake in those games compared to just getting a "W" or a "L" in a garden-variety non-conference game.

Meanwhile, I'm going to carve out a block of time to watch the Titan-Cardinal clash..."Must See D3".

Do everything just as you are doing it, then when Wash U plays IWU again, just bring Q in alongside you two.

It will be great!

Sites official - IWU @ North Central, as expected.

http://static.psbin.com/f/7/5bfwfppwjzli3w/2013-mbb-bracket.pdf

Here's the write up.  http://www.northcentralcardinals.com/news/2013/3/10/MBB_0310134153.aspx

Also here's a link to the highlights from the NCC v. UWW game from last night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=bZeATXLj1Kw

With North Central being #1 in the final NCAA regional rankings, the site of the NCC/IWU game was never in doubt. This was confirmed to me by NCAA site administrator Dave Buchanan on Friday.

* UWW Coach Pat Miller at the post game press conference:

"This is not a 2nd round game. If theres 3 teams in the country better than them, then I'm shocked."

* NCC Coach Raridon at the press conference:

"Getting ready for Wesleyan, I mean, they know what we're gonna do, and we know what they're gonna do."

Pat-Are you anxiously waiting for IWU to disappoint at some time in the tournament?

I don't think there is any anxiety at all here. Clearly you take this much more personally than I do! :)

The sequence that will haunt Bears fans for a while is the possession immediately prior to Ziemnik's big time three.  Nick Burt forced a turnover with the ball rolling out of bounds off Overstreet who clearly had a hand on it.  Blown call.  IWU gets the ball back...and bang.

I think Klimek and Burnett should have been prohibited from shooting from outside.  That three point attempt was one of several bad decisions down the stretch.

Congratulations to the Titans on the big win.  The better team won last night.  The better conference competes next weekend for a trip to Salem.  That IWU-North Central game will be the game to watch.

The Gregory Arena floor is already smoldering.
By Saturday night the entire arena will be on fire!  :)

I know I will be watching.  My advice to North Central on containing Ziemnik: steal the headband; the source of all his power.
