Agreed!  With the exception of Kmiec's career game against Middlebury, the two best teams in the NESCAC stopped NCC's deep offensive attack cold.  Except for Gamble who they had absolutely no answer for.  The best I've seen at his position at the D3 level in a long long time.  Kinda hope he takes up ice hockey next winter.  ;)

Glad to see you're still covering my back Ypsi.  Don't keep the late-night hours just on my account Big Guy.  ;D

Out of all of the recruits could anyone try to rank the top five CCIW recruits so far? In terms if hype, high school success, and potential. Obviously all of this can change because college is completely different.

I would have no way to make a top 5, as I haven't seen any of these guys play, but of the names that have hit the board here, these are the ones that have stood out to me the most in terms of CCIW potential.  I'm just going by what I can find online about each player, etc...pretty much just a complete guess.

(Waiting to hear more about Wheaton's class.)

* Asher, Ian (Wheaton) - 6-0 G from Danville H.S. in IN...17.4 ppg, 3.4 apg

Sorry Mr. Ypsi, I'm going to have to disagree with your parenthetical statements

(a team with Landon Gamble is NOT to be underestimated)

While I agree with this statement, I also would counter "don't underestimate the playmaking ability of the 2 departing seniors". I think Landon capitalized off of the space / attention that those two created. If he steps up and can be a go to scorer for NCC they will be fine, I don't know that NCC has someone they can go to in order to create a shot in a clutch situation. I also don't know how Gamble will handle the double team or if NCC will have personnel to make other teams pay for doubling the post.

Quote from: Mr. Ypsi on May 26, 2013, 11:03:34 PM(And I think your IFs for CC and NPU, if they happen, put them in contention for a tourney berth.)

If Kelly returns CC is closer to the tourney berth, but the only way they are truly in contention for a berth is if they find a transfer or an incoming freshman to replace the production of Thompson and Pierce. Kelley makes a difference but I don't think they have the front line to truly compete with Wheaton, IWU, NCC and Augustana.

Similarly, while Gabriel's hopeful return will significantly upgrade NPU's roster, I don't believe he will have enough of an impact to move NPU into playoff contention. The rest of NPU's roster is just too depleted. The 11-12 season featured a team with a health Gabriel, Mark Holmes and Emanuel Crosby (IMHO a much more talented trio then they will send out in 13-14) which only went 2-12 in conference. For NPU to compete they will have to substantially upgrade their roster from what we know to date.

Consequentially, my WAY-TOO_EARLY picks are

1. IWU – clearly the top returning team (have to find a replacement at the 5 or WC has a chance to nip them in the regular season / or the tournament)

2. WC – Didn't lose anyone from a team which finished a game out of 3rd. Still may have the most dynamic offensive player in the conference and one of the best rebounder's in the country.

3. AC – Talent coming in, but really like the toughness in the back-court.

4. NCC – I'll give NCC the edge over MU, but this is on the assumption that they find a player who can be a go-to scorer (when the post is doubled). Kmiec is about the only one I can see fulfilling this role. I think it's going to be a tight race for the last playoff spot.

5. MU – A young team who will be sophomore heavy. Still young, but I think the difference between freshman and sophomore is night and day (see Overstreet from IWU). If NCC can't replace the senior production, MU is my pick to sneak in the playoffs.

6. CC – If Kelly is back the can make a push for the playoffs, but they have to replace the production from their bigs. As of now I think they are the 6th best team in the conference. I think they will struggle to compete up front unless Bosko is hiding some JC transfer.

7. EC – Don't know enough about them to pick them higher. I like the core of Ackerman / Sanford to finish above NPU... but it depends on what Baines is able to bring in.

8. NPU – This ranking is really a TBD. Gabrial is really the only hope they have at getting out of the cellar. I like Hyrn as a shooter but he is not a go to player yet. We will see who they bring in to fill out the roster.

Just a bit of additional info on the Thunder:  Wheaton will also return Kvam, and Jon DeMoss is expected to return from injury.  Others who played key minutes are Joel Smith and Tad Fisher.

Thanks...I somehow forgot to include Kvam in my original post.  I went back and added.  I didn't include Joel Smith (1.6 ppg) and Tad Fisher (0.8 ppg) because their production was so limited in CCIW play.

Malcom Kelly's return presents an interesting problem for Carthage in that it pushes Reese Herth, CC's leading returning scorer, out of his starting SG position. Herth is too good not to play extended minutes. The question thus becomes does he, at just 6/2, displace Marlon Senior and become CC's very small forward, or does he become the Carthage "super sub," capable of providing some instant offense.
Depending on the opponent, I can see Bosko occasionally playing Logan, Kelly, and Herth together, but this does not seem to be the every night solution given size seems to be the primary missing ingredient north of the boarder. Even if Senior maintains his starting SF position, the real question for CC next season is who can adequately provide starters minutes at the 4 and 5 to fully compliment CC's plethora of talent at both the starting and backup guard positions.

Senior did a very nice job of attacking the boards in the 2nd half of last year after Luke Johnson left the team.

Right now, I think you'll see Logan/Kelly/Herth/Senior a lot and you'll see them press like mad.  Logan and Kelly were doing a lot of this in the 10-11 season and I expect to see more of it.  Kiston Lee, Kevin Sykes Jr and Ellis Matthews will come off the bench at which point Ellis Matthews will immediately jack a three the first time he touches the ball no matter where he is on the court.  I wish I was more confident in Van Wyk, but he doesn't seem to be a top notch basketball player and I can't see him starting (though I'd be happy with quality minutes off the bench).

Carthage will definitely need another strong big to contend, but remember that Kelly is a good rebounder for a guard.  If he returns, that will solve a lot of problems for the club.

My personal projection is that Carthage will finish 1st, but I'm not sure about the national championship yet without knowing the whole recruiting class.

I didn't mention Van Wyk because I don't believe that, based on his performance so far, he is really capable of providing starter quality minutes at the level necessary to achieve much success in the rough and tumble CCIW.
A good starting 4 or 5 should be contributing more than 3.3 ppg and 2.2 rpg. CC would do better to go with Logan, Kelly, Herth, Senior, and almost anyone else.
A big question for CC is whether or not Jaskulske will be returning to the team.   :-\

As far as CC finishing first, I'll take that bet at any odds.  :)
