Article from the Kankakee paper about Jack Sikma being recognized Sunday before the Seahawks' game...

Mr. Ypsi

Q, do you know whether or not IWU tried very hard to recruit Jack's sons?  (With his career, I'm sure his son's athletic scholarships were not out of financial necessity! ;))

(Thanks to Dylan Overstreet's dad and others for tweeting these.)

Looking at those pics, Nick Anderson is a big kid -- he's not that much shorter than Jack, who is a legit 6-11 or maybe 7-0.

Thanks for posting that, Q.  Wouldn't it be neat if we someday get a picture of Jack and current players where Jack is NOT the biggest guy in the picture?! ;D

Yup, several of those pictures make Vic Davis look small.  Jack Sikma did enjoy the football, sitting in the east endzone, talking with many old friends from IWU.

The other thing you notice about the current IWU players is how many of them have bulked up, done the weight work in the off-season, and look stronger than before -- surely true of Sodemann, Zman, Heyen, and Anderson.  Perhaps others I've yet to see.   I bet some of the open gym workouts now are pretty darn competitive.  Will be quite a early season practice time with so many talented players, including the two transfers, vying for PT.  Sat with old friends, the Seibring clan at football -- they have three kids now on IWU basketball rosters -- two guys (Trevor and Spencer) on the freshmen men's rosters, and, of course, senior Katy Seibring, one of the fine returning starters, an all-CCIW first-teamer on the women's roster.   Great to see so so so many Seibring TITANS!

From the 2013-2014 NCAA Division III Manuel:

17.3 Basketball.
17.3.2 Preseason Practices.
17.3.2.1 On-Court Practice. A member institution shall not commence on-court preseason basketball practice sessions before October 15.

10/15 is the date most schools switch over from an "open gym" format to a formal organized practice schedule with coaches present.

This is from mid-August, but I can't remember if it hit the board...

http://www.elmhurstbluejays.com/news/2013/8/14/MBB_0814132751.aspx?path=mbball

Elmhurst men's basketball coach John Baines has announced an additional recruit who has made a commitment to attend Elmhurst College and also play basketball for the Bluejays.

Will Nixon - Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South (6-7, 205 lbs., Center)
2012-13 Season: Attended Wayne State College and appeared in 11 games...Earned three varsity letters from Plainfield South High School and was a three-time all-conference selection...earned first-team all-conference and second-team all-area honors as a junior while setting school records for blocks in a game (eight) and in a season...set a single-season rebound record (233) as a junior...earned first-team all-conference honors as senior while setting a school record for career blocks (120).

Coach Baines on Nixon: "Will Nixon is an unbelievable addition to our program. He is a long, athletic post player that has an awesome nose for the ball. He is a hard worker and his low post game has continued to develop since high school. More than his wonderful playing ability, Will is a high-character person and comes from supportive parents. He is going to have a great career at Elmhurst and is going to make a humungous impact to our basketball family. Securing Will's commitment to Elmhurst College is an indication of where our program is headed. Will chose EC over Augustana, Carthage, and North Central. Those CCIW programs are very strong and Will hopefully is one of many recruits in the future that will appreciate the Bluejays' desire to climb back to the top."

Even despite the next sentence (affirming the strength of the other programs), I wonder if that could become bulletin board material?

I know that it happens all the time... but to come right out and SAY it? Sort of snubs his nose at the other programs a bit (unless I'm reading too much into it).

John,
I respect your experience and expertise, but I did not see it that way.  I think the comments are from a guy who wants his program to do well and is excited about this kid's decision.  And he is hoping other talent follows suit.
Just like we all wish for our respective favorite programs.
It's kind of like celebrating D1 transfers.

This is pretty standard for commits, imo. If you see any of the recruiting shows on ESPNU (or any of the recruiting commit news on ESPN, etc) they always show the "was also considering" or "chosen over schools such as" in the report.
You win! You always do!
