I've always called it "eye you pee you eye", pgkevin, but am I wrong? Do the good people of Naptown refer to their hometown state school as "ee-oopeye" or something silly like that?

I have always referred to IUPUI as "ooh eee poo eee". I am not from Indiana, so this is probably incorrect. Though I'll take any chance to refer to something in Indiana as "poo" when I can get it.

This is the way that I have always heard it pronounced, and I've known a few different people from different eras who have attended the school, and they both proudly refer to it as "ooh eeee poo eee".  I'm not even sure it makes phonetic sense, but they seem to just go with it.

A 3pm sunset just sounds miserably depressing.

The pronunciation of collegiate acronyms isn't always phonetically logical. A classic D3 example is the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The acronym is MSOE, but it's pronounced "mosey" rather than "muh so ee" -- which is why last season, when MSOE's women's basketball team made a trip to the crackerbox to take on the Vikings, I referred on the air to a Raider deciding to "mosey" up the floor. Nobody probably caught the joke, but that's OK.

Yes, IWU's roster is now up -- for 2013-14 -- with 29 players listed.  That's ALOT of talent for Ron Rose to chose from.  Some of the key players, said to be potential starters, have not even been given a number as yet.  Perhaps they don't have that many jerseys.  :)  Both of the transfer guys, even the 6-5 one, are listed as "Guards!"  And who the hell is Max Scholle, listed at 6-10, 190?  Haven't heard about him?  Looks like a banner year for varsity and JV play, with two full squads of 15, almost.  Bet those pre-season practices, battles for varsity PT are going to be pretty intense.   Well, we'll find out what's involved soon enough -- practices start next week.

Wishing all the Titans -- near and far -- a Happy Homecoming this weekend, October 11-13.  The campus looks beautiful and the first place North Park Streak-breakers are coming to town.  Time for a football feast.  Lots hope for decent weather all weekend.  If you are in driving distance -- do come back.  It will be a great weekend, rain or shine.

Would love to hear more comments on any of the Titan newbies, esp. this 6-10 guy.

On a separate occasion, I was traveling to Europe on business and one evening tried to outdrink a Finn.

Never try to outdrink a Finn...

Looks like he'll need some time in the weight room among other things.

I think it's fair to categorize Max Scholle as a "walk-on" basically.  I think they'll get him in the weightroom, develop him over the course of a couple years, then just see where things stand when he's a JR.  The odds are probably not very good he ever contributes at the varsity level, but 6-10 is 6-10...so who knows.  As long as the kid is willing to work hard, sounds like a good situation to me.

Denny McKinney

Titan Q- I don't want to disagree with you. But, calling him a walk-on is wrong. I saw the kid play twice. At one game I did see IWU in attendance. Don't sell this kid short :). St. Louis DIII and NAIA schools were recruiting him. He experienced a late and huge growth spurt. He has Great hands, a very good passer for a big man and is a very skilled shot blocker.

He is in a similar situation as Bryce Dolan was when he came to IWU. He needs weight, strength and quickness work. But, the Kid has a lot of talent. If IWU doesn't want this project, he would have no problem finding another home.

It's that time of year. Good Luck to All CCIW Teams.

Denny McKinney

To clarify Titan Q - I need retract a portion of previous post. IWU was at that game for another player. He called IWU and was told they would be interested in having him. He declined going to two other DIII schools to attend IWU. Sorry.

AndOne

Often times when a D3 player is referred to as a "walk on" it really just means that the kid was not heavily recruited or even recruited at all by a particular school's staff. In truth, a "walk on" at the D3 level often recruits himself to a school rather than the traditional other way around. In this particular case, the likely scenario was that the player pressed the issue more than the school, and Ron Rose is smart enough that when a 6'10" kid who has even an ounce of skill/potential says he would like to play at IWU, Rose is not about to turn the kid down. Same would apply to any other coach/school provided the "recruit" met all the requirements for admission. Even if a kid was a boarderline admit, I bet a school would find a way to open the door if the kid was 82 inches tall.  :)

Former teamate of Millikin's Mitch Wilfer ... safe to say if he was deemed recruitable then the Big Blue would have been recruiting him as well. However, I have no information as to whether or not he was actually on Matt Nadelhoffer's recruiting board.

Thanks all for the info on Scholle.  Yes, looks like a project, but one worth taking on -- esp. for a year or two of JV work.  He seems to be a pretty good shoot blocker, obviously needs to put on some pounds, and improve his foot speed, conditioning,  Has a very strange shooting motion from 15 ft. and in, but, heh, 6-10 can't be taught.  It's there.  Hope he gets lots of time, some minutes in JV play to develop.  29 players on a roster must be one of the longest rosters in recent CCIW, surely recent IWU history.  Right?  If this guy bangs with Marietti, Musselman, Nick Anderson and the others, I'm sure he'll develop some skills and surely some toughness.  Good for him -- let's hope a "walk on" has a good career at IWU and has a rapid up side.

Homecoming weekend, quickly underway now.  Warm greetings to all Titans, near and far.  If you are in driving distance, some great football and soccer match-ups on tap tomorrow from 1:30 p.m. through the evening.  Hope to see you.

Has a very strange shooting motion from 15 ft. and in,

That was the first thing I noticed in the video and I couldn't help myself...from the start of the shot to release:  1.7 seconds.  If you've got the game on the line with a second to go, Max is not going to be your guy

Yeah, and until he hits the weight room and adds some pounds, keep him indoors on windy days so he doesn't blow away! ;D

Maybe April will take pity on him and send lots of cookies. ;)

Q sighting.  Q and his classmates back on campus!  Homecoming reunion for Q's class.  None of us are really young any more, are we?

Ok, guys, lets give Mssr. Scholle a break, let him play his game, develop and perhaps become a good CCIW player.  He's a freshman afterall -- Ypsi, you and I weren't exactly humongous and well-muscled as freshmen either -- and I can assure you neither of us were even close to 6 -10.  Perhaps Jack Sikma will come back in the next couple of summers and teach Mssr. Scholle some moves, some footwork, and to shot that shot with quicker release at the top of his reach.  Now that would be something -- similar to Jack's shot back in the day.  No defence against that . . . or perhaps he learns some 5 foot and in baby hook shots from both sides, with both hands, playing with his back to the basket.  Now that would be something to behold too.  Let's just wait and see how the "project" plays out, how the young Mssr. Scholle develops.  Yes, I'm all for April sending him some of those good (fattening) cookies.

Happy Homecoming all -- I'll try to chat with Q further in person tomorrow at IWU vs. the 1st place streak breakers, the visiting North Parkers.

Friday in the books, all the Alumni Association meetings completed, good "Back to College" classes -- so on to the main events tomorrow.
