Anyone have any idea why Marlon Senior did not dress for last night's Carthage-Sliver Lake game?

I was going to say mercy, because Silver Lake isn't very good (3-11, with two of the wins going against Juco's), but they appeared to hang with Carthage.

Though a Marlon Senior-less Carthage is not the same team that has hung with several top teams of late.

Final from Grand Rapids:

Calvin 78
Wheaton 51

Postgame ponderings:

1) Is Wheaton too perimeter-oriented?

2) What would the late Art Kimball have done to me had I taken a cell phone call while on the air? ("Q, tell ya what, you leave R.A. Faganel Hall now on foot and I'll pick you up somewhere around Dwight.")

I had a good laugh with that cell phone call during an otherwise sad game.

Players not named Teuscher, Peters or Haynes went 1-24 from the field. Mike Kvam is shooting 33% overall this year after another 0-7.  I think Wheaton has some young guards on the bench that can give something more with those minutes than a purely long-range set-shooter.

1-24?  The Ju Ju Hounds could have shot that percentage.

Haha. I think you are probably right.

Hey, if the defense puts a pressure drop on you, then how will it go? The only buckets you'll get are a bucket o' trouble, that's how.

Wow, nicely done!

I love that album.

That's for darned sure.

I've never understood why Bosko keeps scheduling Silver Lake all the time, but at least this season it could be argued that the game is a nice respite from what is otherwise a killer schedule. After having had to face Dubuque, Wash U, Cardinal Stritch, Calvin, and Hope, the Red Men next get UW-Platteville.

Rose-Hulman knocked off Millikin, 64-55, at the Griz. Deavis Johnson led the Big Blue with 13 and 8, while Tives Gardner had 10. T.J. Griffin played -- in fact, he played 34 minutes -- but didn't have a good shooting night, going only 2-9 from the field and ending up with seven points. He had a nice floor game, though: 4:0 a:to, with three steals.

This is obviously not the same thing as losing to Principia if you're a Millikin fan. The Engineers have been up and down this year, but RHIT has established itself as a very solid program over the past two or three seasons.

Carthage isn't very deep in the bigs (PF and C).  Marlon Senior has played great so far and Mike Kastel likes to rebound and fight in the paint, but there's a pretty big dropoff from those two to the backups and I don't think any of Van Wyk, McNellis or Valentine could be very successful with starter minutes.

They have more depth at guard/small forward and will have even more when Malcom Kelly returns, but even then, this team is not going more than eight deep.

With regards to scheduling, Carthage has played 4 Top 100 D3 teams (according to Massey), 2 weaker D3 teams, a very good NAIA team and a not so good USCAA team.   They have two other Top 100 D3 (Platteville and Eastern Conn) teams left in the nonconference schedule along with an ok Buffalo St, so I think it's been a good schedule to prep them for CCIW play.

Having left yesterday on a 6 trip to Ohio and Virginia, North Central tonight defeated (NAIA) Wilberforce (OH) by a 78-59 score.
NCC was led by Vince Kmiec with 25 (plus 10 rebounds), followed by Landon Gamble with 17 (not 15). Kevin Honn and Brandon Williams both had 10.
Gamble now has 1,314 career points, passing Anthony Simmons and Dan Walton tonight to assume 8th place all-time.
On tomorrow to the Bridgewater, VA tournament to take on host Bridgewater and Eastern Mennonite on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Speaking of NCC, does anyone know where CJ Goldthree ended up at?

IWU now ranked #3 moving up, Augie moving up, WC down.  NCC still ORVs.

I think Augie is going to be better than many of us thought earlier on.

Am very much hoping the Titans go 10-1 or 9-2 in the pre-CCIW season portion.  Still stunned, disapponted at the loss of Rossi.  Time for all the other Titans to get healthy, start contributing -- esp. Zimmer, Jordan Nelson, Heyen, Overstreet, and, if at all possible, Marietti.  Great start this season for Anderson and Vic Davis.  Zman playing well, but not really breaking out as yet.  Stay tuned.  As I mentioned some weeks back, very hard to dislodge Sodemann from the starting line-up at the 2.  He's playing well.  Congrats to Dylan Overstreet on CCIW Player of the Week, just after coming back from his knee injury.

Good luck to NCC tomorrow in the football semis @Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio.

The Titans have really shot the ball well through 6 games.  IWU is .528 from the field and .482 from 3.

IWU has a number of players who can shoot the 3:
- Pat Sodemann: 14-25 (.560)
- Bryce Dolan: 12-18 (.667)
- Andrew Ziemnik: 11-21 (.524)
- Victor Davis: 6-17 (.353)
- Dylan Overstreet: 5-10 (.500)
- Mike Mayberger: 4-13 (.308)

This list doesn't include two guys coming back from injury who are great 3-point shooters - Brady Zimmer and Jordan Nelson.  (Nelson is probably the best pure 3-point shooter on the team.)

The Titans' ability to knock down 3-point shots, while being very good inside, makes them hard to defend.  (IWU averages 87.5 points per game.)

The defense has also been good.  IWU opponents are shooting just .390 from the field.

Hopefully the Titans can build on that impressive win over Wash U this afternoon on the south side.

Trine 87
North Park 73

Aaron Weaver: 29 pts, 9 rebs
Juwan Henry: 18 pts

NPU suffered its first road loss of the season today, as Trine used a 14-2 run in the middle of the second half to break open a seesaw game and forge a double-digit lead it would never give up. The Vikings did get as close as six down the stretch, but too many one-and-dones spelled their doom.

The Vikings were essentially a two-man team today. Aside from Weaver and Henry, the Vikings went 10-30 from the field. The Vikings were outrebounded by six -- again, that constitutes a good day for NPU -- and only had a one-turnover advantage. They simply aren't getting enough of a combination of shots and free throws to overcome their opponents.

This game was not webcast by Trine, so my insights into what happened are limited. But nothing about Trine's record to date indicates to me that the Thunder are a high-quality team. This isn't what I'd call a "good loss", if such a thing exists.

That's going to be a painful busride home from Angola ... probably made longer by the fact that the Indiana Toll Road is a snowy mess today.

A sloppy performance by the Titans for large stretches, but they also made a lot of plays to prevent Chicago from really ever threatening in this game.  This IWU team makes a lot of "veteran plays" over the course of a game.  It is a really fundamentally sound and smart team on both ends of the floor.

Pat Sodemann and Mike Mayberger had good games today.  Dylan Overstreet also made several plays in the 2nd half when the Titans pulled away for good -- he has turned into a great PG and leader.

Another balanced effort for IWU with several players having good games.  The Titans are now 6-1.

North Central 70
Eastern Mennonite 68

NCC escapes with a win out east. Landon Gamble had 24, Vince Kmiec scored 20, Kevin Honn added 11, and Jack Burchett grabbed nine caroms.

Mark, is Evan Fendley any relation to former Carthage and Elmhurst guard Sean Fendley? I noticed that they went to the same high school, York in Elmhurst.
