Wheaton got a decent draw. I think it's a little unfair Hope is hosting instead of Wheaton but the Thunder have to feel like they can compete with anyone on any floor after playing the schedule they played.  Should be a fun weekend.
Yes, I think Wheaton got a decent draw where could have success.  It could be mileage came into play with Penn State - Behrend

Looking at the Webster Gorloks...

... which brought the immediate question to mind: what the heck is a Gorlok?!?!?

If you believe what the internets tell you, then:

University         Webster University
Conference    SLIAC
Description    Cheetah/Buffalo/Saint Bernard
Origin of name    Nearby Gore and Lockwood Avenues
First seen            1984

The Gorlok is Webster University's school mascot. It is a mythical creature that was designed by Webster staff and students through a school contest. It has the paws of a cheetah, the horns of a buffalo, and the face of a Saint Bernard dog.

Origin of the name

The name was derived from the combination of the two streets that intersect in the heart of Old Webster, Gore and Lockwood Avenues. The name was chosen in June 1984 by a campus committee that considered many suggestions before settling on the nickname.

The oddest note from all that from my perspective, and yes I did read the paws-of-this-animal-and-horns-of-that-creature section, is that this mascot/name has only been around for 30 years.  The school was founded in 1915.

If I read correctly from the front page's projection prior to the field being announced, the committee typically (a) picks the field, then (b) picks the schools worthy of hosting, then (c) tries to make the bracket work.

(I don't know if this accurately represents this year's approach -- particularly with the Emory/bye wrinkle.)

When IWU and Webster played during the 2010-11 season, I drove to St. Louis from Columbia, Mo for the game.  I got there early to watch IWU's JV team:

G - Brady Zimmer
G - Mike Mayberger
F - Andrew Ziemnik
F - Victor Davis
C - Nick Anderson

F - Eric Dortch

I remember Ron Rose saying to me, "Q, you are going to really like this freshman class someday."

Wheaton hosted Behrend in the first round for women's soccer a couple years ago and there was no flight involved.

PSB is in Erie, which is practically Ohio.  Google maps has the distance from campus to campus at 475 miles.

Someone please explain to me why the #2 team in the Great Lakes should not be hosting the #3? They like having two hosts in each region... unless its the South and you are Scranton. :)

OK, guys, don't be cruel.  At least I don't have to put up with your nasty, never-ending winter over there.  LOL.  Being a loyal IWU and CCIW fan is pretty easy -- way over here 8.000+ miles away, so sometimes I don't get it right.  My bad.  Have mercy.  I was cheering for IWU way before the three-point line, before the shot clock, and before most of you gents were a glint in your father's eye.

Can any of you explain the Emory bye any way other than geography and bean counters worried about cost?

I'd think the Titans have a really good chance vs. Webster, though St. Norbet will be a very tough out, it would appear.

OK, just move on.  Sunny warm and in the 70s here in Hong Kong today.   :)

When I sat down and did my own seeds(1,2,3,4 in each pod) I ended up with Wheaton as the last #1, Hope the first #2.  I felt it could go either way and you could make a case for both.

I think if the regional were at Wheaton you could say the Great Lakes #2 having to travel to Midwest #3 might be a little unfair as well.  No?

Yes, but Hope (Great Lakes) and Wheaton (Midwest) are in different regions.  Just because Team A is a #2 seed in one region, and Team B is a #3 in another, does not mean that Team A should automatically be a higher seed than Team B in terms of the bracket.  It is still supposed to come down, like everything else, to the criteria:

* Hope: .760/.556/2-4 (lost to Wheaton)
* Wheaton: .704/.607/8-5 (beat Hope)

It seems to me Wheaton should be a higher seed in the tournament than Hope.  With mileage not a factor between Hope/Wheaton/Rose-Hulman/Penn St-Behrend, I think Wheaton has a real beef.

Webster was a small, Catholic, all women's school for decades. Went seriously co-ed in the 1970s, I think, and didn't start an athletics program until the 1980s.

Augiefan - appreciate the knowledge regarding the Roop.  If I would have known his school affiliation I wouldn't have bothered to respond.

But you have to be impressed for his reasoning that Augie shouldn't be in the tourney because they have "7 losses".  That's a really good comeback considering there are 24 teams in this year's bracket with 7 or more losses.

Not to mention from Erie, Wheaton is only a marginally longer drive than Holland and would be a shorter drive for Rose-Hulman.

R/H will be a tough game no doubt for the Thunder.  They have a pretty dynamic guard, pre-season A/A in G Julian Strickland.  If they're able to win that one, I don't think anyone would relish playing Hope @  DeVos Fieldhouse in a tournament game.  That's about as tough a road game (and home court advantage) as any in D3.  3,000 plus no doubt.  Wheaton should take no comfort in having beaten them already this year (@ Calvin) as that was 3 months ago.

But then again, no team should expect an easy win at this time of year(unless you're Whitewater in the 1st rd), home or away.

Thank you.  The Gorlock still sounds like there was a zoo next to a nuclear reactor.
