The CCIW has a connection to the D1 tournament

former Elmhurst baseball coach and assistant basketball coach Ron Wellman is the chair of the D1 basketball committee.

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

D-3 watcher

Ron Wellman also has Bloomington/Normal ties.
He was the Athletic Director at Illinois State University.

Another D1 tournament/Elmhurst connection -- Wichita State's top assistant coach, Chris Jans, was on Scott Trost's staff at Elmhurst.

There are a lot of D3 connections to the D1 tournament - would be fun to try to figure all of them out.

Mike Greenman, starting PG for Williams ===> brother (Scott) is an assistant coach for American U. which surprised folks and won their conference to make the tournament.

Dave 'd-mac' McHugh

Couple more:

Mary Washington coach Rod Wood's college roommate and teammate was Greg Marshall... they both played at Randolph-Macon under Hal Nunnely.

Williams freshman guard Mike Greenman's brother is an assistant at D1 American. (yeah... mentioned)

As a Calvin fan, I wish to extend my congratulations to IWA for advancing to the Final Four.  Friday was my first visit to the Shirk Center and I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere.  You have a great facility, wonderful fans, and a first-class pep band.  Not to mention, of course, a strong, deep, and well-balanced basketball team.

Best wishes in Salem.  Go Titans!

Thanks, Wiz, much appreciated.  We are very very proud of our Shirk Center, our Music School (including the mighty Pep Band), and our basketball team and sporting traditions at IWU.  Calvin had a great year and congrats to your Coaches and team.  I'm sure Calvin and Hope will always be there at the top, appearing in Sectionals and competing for the national title.  No doubt.  Great programs all.

IWU now the winningest program in the history of the NCAA D3 national tournament -- 53-22 in 23 appearances (overtaking Wittenberg, in 27 appearances).   Keep it rolling, Titans = we are all with you, hoping for more.

A fine four for the Final Four -- Amherst, Williams, WI-Whitewater, and IWU.  Some serious D3 hoops programs and traditions coming together in Salem.  Should be a great weekend of D3 basketball.  Wish I could be there.

I'll pile on with wiz and oldknight: Another Calvin fan rooting for the Titans this weekend.
Really enjoyed our all-too-brief stay in Bloomington on Friday evening/Saturday morning.
First class school, people and program.
Would love to see IWU and Calvin play each other regularly.

Pat Coleman interviewed Ron Rose last night at the Shirk Center.  You can find it at the 48:40 mark on the Hoopsville archive from tonight...

Mr. Ypsi

Mrs. Y and I WILL be in Salem for the first time - can't wait!  In 2011, decided not to go because both IWU men and women were in FF, so stayed home to watch them both.  In previous FF appearances, was still a working stiff.

Once Mr. and Mrs. Ypsi get through with Salem, it will never be the same.

Glad you are able to make it, Chuck!

Thanks, Bob.  It will be great to see you again, and hopefully finally meet Pat Coleman et.al., and posters from Amherst, Williams, and UWW.

I've got our motel reservations (Comfort Suites Inn at Ridgewood), but haven't yet penetrated the Salem Civic Center website to get tickets - I'll probably go old-fashioned and call the ticket office on the phone tomorrow! ::)

Mrs. Y is more interested in the bike trails (and warmth) in the area, but does plan to attend the games.

I would recommend a box and 1 defense against UWW. Sure you give up more 3 point attempts but it allows you cut off the baseline and trap when the guards penetrate. Run as much clock you can too so their speed doesn't wear you out. Beloit hung with them and actually led for a while then the speed took over and they ran out of gas and the game got out of hand.

I don't think IWU wants any part of slowing the game down - the Titans would love a fast-paced game.
No question Titans want fast paced game.

Maybe the question Q --- Is this finally the right opportunity for the five guard lineup?
