"We probably better enjoy this one, because I don't think we're going to get many more Division I programs that will let us in their gyms,'' Giovanine said.

Big win for Augie. Coach G is in midseason form with these quotes:

"You have to realize we're not like any Division III team in the country," said Augustana coach Grey Giovanine. "We're unique. We're a seasoned, veteran really good team. Many of our guys turned down athletic scholarships because they wanted to be in our pre-med program.

"I certainly couldn't be prouder of our guys. There's 150 Division I teams that couldn't beat us. I know that because I coached at six of them."

Is that the same pre-med program and medical school that Luke Scarlotta thought he was enrolling in?  ::)

USee forgot one of Coach G's quotes:  ;)

"During warmups, I sent half of the guys down under the east basket, half under the west basket, and I kept the other half with me."  ???

Apparently Coach G attended the Yogi Berra School of Communication. 8-)

Augie scrimmage tweet...

Grey Giovanine @Augustana_Hoops  3 hours ago
Vikes win two halves vs. Il Benedictine U. last night in scrimmage...49-32 &
50-31. Balanced & unselfish (19 assists). @ Bradley Thursday!

Benedictine dropped the "Illinois" part of its name 18 years ago. Is Giovanine aware of this, and just tweeting that in order to needle Keith Bunkenburg for some reason? ;)

Then again, it might've been an honest mistake on the Augie coach's part. Heck, I still run into Chicagoans every now and then who refer to UIC as "Circle."

Was BU ever IBU? I only ever remember them as IBC.... Not sure when they switched from a college to a university.

Also not sure when they switched from St. Procopius  to IBC.... Sometime between when my dad went there and my memory begins.....

No, the school went straight from IBC to BU.

From our friends at Wikiguessia:

St. Procopius College changed its name to Illinois Benedictine College in 1971, and became Benedictine University in 1996.

Well, you have to remember that 80% of all Grey Giovanine quotes are rough paraphrases, and the other half are completely made up.

Congrats Augustana. I wasn't aware that Augie had a superior pre-med program. I thought IWU had the premiere pre-med program, but maybe I'm wrong. IWU has had many pre-med basketball players over the years, Todd Wente a fairly recent example.

Regarding ONU/IWU scrimmage. ONU is loaded with an experienced athletic 6'10' post, a 6'8" wing from Unity of Tolono who chose ONU over IWU & several good guards. Hard to tell how good or bad a team is in a pre-season scrimmage, but my guess is that ONU would go 13-1 or 12-2 in the CCIW this year. Talked to an ONU fan and he said Hodge really wanted Overstreet so at least IWU won one recruiting battle. He said ONU gives 12 scholarships, full and/or partial. I assume he meant 12 tuition-free scholarships. Sounds like a lot of lost revenue for ONU. Maybe they have significant donors who fund the scholarships.

Carthage 7th?

Please fill me in.

I posted my personal preseason ranking a few weeks back and had Carthage 6th.  I don't think 7th is too crazy.  The Red Men could end up being better than than, but on paper here in the preseason it just seems there are so many questions about what they have this year...even more so than the teams ahead of them.

Carthage (16-10, 9-5)
G - Donte Logan, 5-11/160 Jr
G - Malcom Kelly, 6-0/185 Sr    1st Team All-CCIW
G - Kevin Sykes Jr, 6-3/160 Sr
F - Marlon Senior, 6-5/195 Sr    2nd Team All-CCIW
C - Mike Kastel, 6-7/235 Jr

F - Cameron Van Wyk, 6-6/185 Jr
G - Reese Herth, 6-2/170 Jr
G - Myles Olsen, 6-1/195 So
F - Sean Valentine, 6-4/200, Jr

How I see the CCIW going in:

1. Augustana -- the Vikings return everyone and are loaded; should enter as a Top 5 team nationally.

2. Illinois Wesleyan -- will have elite guard play and a returning center with nice upside; questions to answer at forward spots but have some pretty good options.

3. Wheaton -- lost two great players, but have a nice nucleus returning and some good freshmen; big questions in low post.

4. Elmhurst -- a lot of experienced talent returning and a couple impact additions; a team I think will surprise in 2014-15.

5. North Central -- impressive talent returning at both the perimeter and post, but I'm not sure about the depth yet.

6. Carthage -- similar to NCC, several good players returning but questions about depth.

7. Millikin -- Matt Nadelhoffer finally has juniors; I think the Big Blue turns the corner this year and will be much improved; for me, big questions about the 5 though.

8. North Park -- star guard to build around and seems like a lot of other talent; who knows.

Just attended the G/W scrimmage -- five or so 10 minute segments, with all kinds of combinations on the floor.  No Overstreet, no Heyen (in a boot), very little playiing time for Scholle.  One can't helped but be impressed by the shooting and range of Jordan Nelson.  It was so again today.  The guy can really light it up in a blink.  Saw flashes of that today from Brady Rose too.  He has the CCIW 2 guard body and the nose for the game, no doubt.  Both Marietti and Seibring had strong outings in the paint, and they will be tough for most teams to handle.  Very sound fundamentally, good foot movement, strong around the basket.  I think both will anchor the paint for the Titans this year.  With good entry passes, both of these guys will be hard to stop near the basket.   I was not sold on Ryan Colye at the 4 but he played well today and made shots from near and far, showing more range in shooting than I thought he had.  When open, he can knock down the 3s too.  The Titans are so so lucky to have quality guards in great depth, esp. Bryce Dolan and Andy Stempel. Clearly, Brady Rose is ready to play in the CCIW now, and could make some contributions this year too, as several have mentioned earlier.   Sadly, Brian Nelms was injured today, in what appears to be a pretty serious ankle sprain.  Latter sessions of the scrimmage featured all the newbies, pine sitters.  Can't say anyone really impressed, save for the quickness of Derrick Streety and the shooting of Kevin Connelly. Many of these sophomores and freshpeople need to grow and strengthen, to spend time playing significant JV competition and prepare for serious CCIW play at the varsity level in a year or two.  Time will tell.  Big turnout for today's scrimmage.  One has to be pretty optimistic for another winning and high-quality IWU season.  How far they can go, how far they can take it . . . well, we'll just have to wait and see.  Season opens at Benedictine U in Lisle a week tonight.

GO TITANS!

Trying to track down Parker Musselman and Alex Rossi for interviews, then I'll be all done.

Q, good luck with that.  I've seen Rossi around Shirk, but no sign of dear Parker for some time.  I think he fell off the face of the earth.  Rossi works at Shirk, so I'm sure he still has the "gym rat" sentiment in his blood.  (No doubt, both would give you a good interview -- but more about not playing, than playing).  :)

Interesting G/W scrimmage today -- and some concerns about injuries still, seems to me.  Titans do have lots of guards, will be very perimeter-oriented, and taking lots of treys.  Would love to see a bit more rebounding strength, toughness in the paint, and a little more slashing and penetration.  No Overstreet on the floor today for some reason, though he was on the sidelines behaving more like a coach than a player.  Guess that what senior captains do.  Lots of talent for Ron Rose to combine, select from, though much of it raw and new.  Should be interesting as the varsity rotation comes into focus in the early weeks.  I was most impressed with Nelson.  He should have a huge year.  Also, Seibring and Marietti are big tough hombres, anchoring the paint for the Titans.  More questions with the others.

Good luck with your preview . . . and chasing down those last interviews.  (don't forget Heyen!).

Don't forget Eliud Gonzalez as well. I read some speculation online that he might have a year of eligibility left. ;)

Mr. Ypsi

Any eligibility left for Jack Sikma? ;D

I'm betting that he could STILL dominate on the inside.

North Park has a premier pre-med program as well, I believe it has an 85% acceptance rate in to medical school. Nice new facility on campus as well.
