If you think "game shoes" are paid for by all D-III schools for their athletes, its best to re-do that survey.  The game shoes are the same shoes the athlete wears in practice and going through a couple of pair of them a year is expensive.  And not all schools pick up the tab!  Either that or the athletes as a majority have got together, made an agreement to hoodwinks their parents and pulled one over us all in a grand plan to walk away a hundred dollar plus richer!

Have to check that one out myself!

I was just asking.  I know, when I was in school, the school picked up the tab for one pair a year for everybody and they were considered part of the uniform that they could only wear in games (once they broke them in, of course).

I was just assuming larger schools, like those in the CCIW might do something similar.  I wasn't being mean or anything; I was just curious.

I know with Augustana has a deal worked out with Nike that they get shoes at a discounted price....about 40-50% off.  (at least it was that way with football spikes) I'm not sure if the basketball team gets the same deal or not...I would assume that they do.  Big game tomorrow

hi hoopsfan....we pay for the shoes....so we usually buy a game pair and then a practice pair too.....i even bought his hoody sweatshirt ....i have no complaints....it ain't cheap but they get a great education and get to play the ball that they love to boot....it was just nice to see that trib article cuz i think there are lots of misconceptions about what kids get at the d-3 level in comparison to d-1 and as you know, we are no less....people think we're getting all this free cuz our kid plays a sport....guess again.

I am surprised that the conference doesn't have a deal with someone.  I know the NJAC used to have a deal with converse, all the players in the conference got two pairs of shoes for basketball in the teams colors.  Some chose to wear different shoes, but they had the cons if they wanted them.

I'm glad to hear that even the big boys don't all have it easy when it comes to shoes.  I know one of the guys gave me an old pair of his "game shoes" on year and they were so worn out it was like wearing those paper hospital booties.  It's scary the wear that gets put on those shoes over the course of a 25-30 game season.

yeah and not to mention the "inside condition" of those shoes.....you are brave!! yuk!

it's not only that....even in the off season when he wants some of those summer flips (sandals) the guys wear....cripe...given his size it still costs me an arm and a leg!   he told me one day he was going to go into business and open a big man's store so big guys his age could find something to wear that was in style without looking like a 20 year old in a old guys golf outfit!   tough to find cool stuff and it's NEVER cheap!

In D3, we're talking about basic basketball shoes and if they're getting them for free or if the player has to pick them up.

In D1, there is more talk of how many pairs they get and if the handshake had a $20 or $100 bill in it.

Does anyone know how the CCIW JV teams fared this season? Only Millikin seems to post the scores. Naturally I am most interested in how Augie did, but I welcome any info. on the JV scene. I know Mike Thomas' brother is on the Augie JVs. Perhaps he can give a brief rundown on Augie's fortunes.

Elmhurst_Mom,

You guy may already know about it, but Eastbay always has large shoes... and I've actually bought several of pairs of older (like, last year's model) shoes for less than $40 per pair, in size 16, and there were other similar sizes available, in their discount catalogue... I think it usually came out in the late spring or early summer, but you can get great deals!

Not to say that there aren't other places to get deals on shoes, and I'm not trying to advertise specifically for Eastbay... just thought I'd pass the good word!

Also, at Point, our program got us our shoes... If there was ever a problem with them (i.e. they wore out) the company replaced them for us... it was a pretty nice situation.

augie fanatic,

I'm guessing.........IWU's JV team only lost one game, and Augie's JV team lost one, and Elmhurst lost one or two.  That's all I know.  Basically, I think the JV teams fared the same as their varsity teams did.  Who would've won the conference title (if there was one)?  Don't think too many people know that one.   ???

Regarding U. of Chicago, evidently Lew Freedman's regional geography is as spotty as his knowledge of astronomy!  It was nice to see a D3 article, but I thought he overplayed the "D3 as poverty case" angle a bit.  I'm sure Chris Martin gets new sneakers when he needs them.

Cool! This makes four different CCIW campuses of which I'm aware where at least one active or retired faculty member is an avid CCIW Chat reader. For all I know, the other four may be represented as well.

No wonder our student posters are so well-behaved.  :D

A snapshot of the CCIW tourney field...

http://www.iwuhoops.com/PREVIEWS.HTM

Just looking at the starters, I think IWU has the best point-guard (Dauksas), Augie the best 2 (Harrigan), Elmhurst the best 3 (Martin), and North Central the best 5 (Simmons).  Of the power forwards, Jay McAdams-Thorton is probably the best, but one could make a case for Cory Jones, Adam Krumtinger, or Brent Ruch/Robert Strzemp.  McAdams-Thorton gets the most shots, but those other 3 are very productive in their respective roles.

Speaking of the small forwards, how strong are the CCIW 3's when 6-6 Keelan Amelianovich (18.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg) and 6-5 Daniel Walton (16.8 ppg, 7.2 rpg) are not statistically the best at that spot?

I'm not sure I can think of a tournament IWU has been in with a field this balanced.  These teams, in my opinion, are dead even.

The NPU basketball team has a deal with Adidas. I'm not sure of the specifics, but I think that they got one pair of kicks apiece out of the deal. They also got their black velour warmups from Adidas as part of that deal, warmups which one Viking said made them look like Eastern European hit men.  :D
