Thanks, USee.
Would this be someone that was recruited, or someone that decided he wanted to go to Wheaton and just announced it?

AUGIE RECRUIT

Jake Asquini--6'2" SG from St. Charles East. 64 three pointers. No other stats available now.

Asquini is a 3 sport athlete (FB, BBall and Base Ball) at St. Charles East, which was 24-4 this season in BBall. A great perimeter shooter with a real quick release. I think he will be an excellent player in the CCIW.

I don't know for sure but judging from his skill level in the video I would guess he was recruited.

They will be massing for the invasion in a couple more months, Chuck. We call those troops "tourists," and our neighbors to the north call them "FIBS."

Quote from: joehakes on March 26, 2015, 08:32:38 AMThanks, Greg.  As most likely the only TIU (TC when I was there) alum that reads this site, I appreciate the nice comments about the school.  The coach that is there now will improve the program but there is just a difference between NAIA and DIII basketball in style of play, etc.  I prefer DIII every day of the week.

There's actually at least one other CCIW Chat regular poster besides you who is a TIU alumnus, Joe. I'll leave him in anonymity for now in case he would like to keep that fact a secret, for whatever reason. ;)

Sac is right about the year in question. Just because its called a "tournament" doesn't mean it really was, and neither does the fact that T-shirts may have been printed saying Tip-Off Tournament.

This may re-open that can of worms as to whether Wheaton or North Central gives out a better-quality t-shirt for their respective opening tournaments. ;)

Now you have me wondering who that would be.  There is a large gap of TIU players that I would not know.

I don't think he played basketball for TIU.

Time to explode out of the TC/TIU closet that I didn't even realize I was in.  Graduated in '82 (four years later than the rest of my HS classmates), didn't play, but was an avid Trinity hoops fan at the time (the Dan Dondit glory years).

joehakes

Pete,

It is a rather small closet apparently.  I was there earlier than you, class of '75 but graduated in '76. My father was the academic dean at the time so tuition was free for me.  I was the only PE major who took upper level philosophy courses for fun so went an extra semester.  Bob Slater was the star player when I was there and I had to guard him every day in practice.  I still have a dent in my shin where he would kick me on his fallaway jumper.  I just saw many of my old team mates there when they dedicated the basketball court to Henry Van Dixhorn who was the basketball coach/AD when I was there.

Well, that ends the reunion. On to the usual off season topics.  Have we compared endowments yet?  Talked about how hard it is to get in to every school in the conference, or had the "what if" discussion if everyone had stayed with their team for four years?  How about the "my coach can beat up your coach" melee?

No, well then keep (un)calm and carry on!

Only because I happen to be watching the Twitter feed and not because I care at all about prospect announcements (because, I really don't):

@NCCBasketball - Happy to announce the official commitment of 6'8 St. Charles East big man, Jack Bronec! #WeAreNC #d3h

A very good get for the NCC Cardinals, the 6'8" 215 pound Bronec centered the St. Charles East team this past season, and helped lead them to a 24-4 record. Jack began his HS career as a member of the freshman 'B' team, and progressed/developed into a varsity starter and key contributor. Further skill development and added strength will yet further that development at the college level.
In addition to North Central, he considered Illinois Wesleyan, Augustana, Carthage, Hope, NAIA institutions Roosevelt and Goshen, and D1 Patriot League member Holy Cross from which he had a full tuition offer.
Jack's addition to the Cardinal squad, and his progression, is viewed as an important factor in helping to fill the void created by the loss to graduation of Charlie Rosenberg and, especially, "Big" Jack Burchett in the middle.

MORE NORTH CENTRAL RECRUITS

* East Aurora Holiday Tournament MVP
* Daily Herald 2 time All-Area 1st team

* Associated Press 2nd team All-State (Only 2 teams are picked)
* Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Class 1A/2A 4th team All-State

Interesting article in today's Trib about comments made by Geno Auriemma about D1 men's b'ball. "I think the game's a joke. As a spectator, forget that I'm a coach, watching it, it's a joke. There's only like 10 teams in the Top 25 that play the kind of b'ball you want to watch. And the bottom line is, nobody can score. They'll tell you that it's because of great defense, great scouting, a lot of film work. Nonsense. College men's b'ball is so far behind the times, it's unbelievable." Couldn't agree more.  In about half of D1 games (I'm guessing), the halftime leader has fewer than 30 points, and some have 25 or fewer. Does anyone go to coffee break and talk about a great D1 game that's 46-43? But I heard a lot of comments about how great the WI/N. Carolina and the WI/Arizona games were. Just so glad I'm a D3 fan. The 2 best games I saw this year were Augie beating WI-W'water 96-94 in 2 OTs and IWU beating Augie in R.I. 89-84. Not your typical U. of IL score. Prior to the CCIW Conf. Tounament, here were the team ppg figures: Augie: 78.5 Elmhurst: 76.6 IWU: 78.8 NCC: 70.7  And just a little history: The 89/90 Loyola Maymount team averaged 122.4 and just a two years earlier, the 87/88 IWU team (referred to as the "Bracksick" team by IWU fans) averaged 90.2 and got beat in the D3 tournament by Ohio Wesleyan which averaged 95.3. In the quarterfinals at OWU, the score was 106-103 in regulation with a halftime score of 59-52. Sure would have liked to witness the Elmhurst/ St. Norber'ts 1st Round game this year. I'm sure a lot of Elmhurst fans would rate it as the best D3 game they have ever seen.

Am I the only one who is snickering at the mental picture of Joe Hakes and Pete McBride standing in a closet talking about Trinity College basketball from the short-shorts era?

Spoken like the true Dennis Bridges disciple that you are, Lanny. ;D

I'm sure that you're happy you didn't watch any of UWSP's games in the tournament this year. Defense? Defense? Blecch! ;)

Greg: I did see WI-SP twice, once at SP when the Pointers beat IWU decisively and again on large screen TV when SP did the same to Augie. Agreed that defense is important, but SP was also a very good offensive team. Their game was similar to U. of WI in that all 5 starters could handle the ball, they made few TOs, made the extra pass and usually got good shots. Bob Semling is a great coach as his 242-56 record, 9 straight D3 tournament appearances & 2 championships attest.

Gregory Sager

Well, I was mostly teasing you with that gibe about UWSP. You're absolutely right about the fact that the Pointers were a very good offensive team, inasmuch as they were highly efficient in terms of points per possession (for the reasons that you mentioned). It's just that it was a painstakingly deliberate efficiency. ;)

Anything going on as far as Elmhurst recruiting and or signings?

Why do refs have to help Duke?!?  Over the years too.  Tonight, the refs sent an early handicap against the Spartans, just like last weekend against Gonzaga.  I was surprised the whistle on Okafor's travel was actually called a travel instead of an MSU foul.  Good job, zebras.  Second half tonight is equally odious.
