To all the good guys on the CCIW Board:

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the good guys on the OTHER board in the Central Region!!

                                                    The SLIAC Board

                                                                    ;) ;)

What, you're not gonna wish Gregory a Merry Christmas?! :o

(Just kidding, Greg. ;D)

Merry Christmas to hopefan, the SLIAC, and all the CCIW posters (whether good guys or not! 8-)).

Been away, haven't seen you in a while
How've you been? Have you changed your style?
And do you think that we've grown up differently?
Don't seem the same, seems you've lost your feel for me

So let's leave it alone 'cause we can't see eye to eye
There ain't no good guys, there ain't no bad guys
There's only you and me and we just disagree

Ooh ooh ooh ooh oh whoa

I'm going back to a place that's far away
How 'bout you? Have you got a place to stay?
Why should I care? When I'm just trying to get along
We were friends but now it's the end of our love song

So let's leave it alone 'cause we can't see eye to eye
There ain't no good guys, there ain't no bad guys
There's only you and me and we just disagree

Ooh ooh ooh ooh oh whoa

:o  ;)  ;D

* I'll take Sorenson over Seibring by a whisker or two as I feel his game is a slight bit more diversified. Placement may depend on where their teams finish.
* If EC finishes 2nd (or 1st) they will likely get 3 spots on the team
* Tommy Pilackas is a good player, but based on where Millikin will likely finish, I don't anticipate they will land 2 spots on the 2nd team. They may not get two spots on the entire team.
* Same applies to Wheaton. I think their likely placement results in only one spot (Berg).
* I think Jagger Anderson is gonna open some eyes during the season.
* If Augie finishes first, I would expect to see 3 western Vikings on the team.
* Who isn't listed that has a good chance to be there in the end--> Tayvian Johnson (Augie) and Will Nixon (EC). Especially if the voting does not follow the traditional G/G/F/F/C makeup.

Just to clarify on my team, I was not trying to replicate the way the official end-of-season all-CCIW team is picked.

* The official team picked by the coaches has no regard for position, whereas my team was picked by position.

* I did not factor in team results at all - just individual performance.

Carthage has a new player in their starting lineup that made a big impact in the two Puerto Rico games.

http://athletics.carthage.edu/roster.aspx?rp_id=6957&path=mbball

http://kenoshanews.com/sports/pierce_steps_right_into_the_fray_for_red_men_485811550.php

Tony Pierce Jr (Niles West H.S. 2011), a 6-1/185 senior guard, transferred to Carthage from Robert Morris U. before last season, but did not play basketball in '14-15. In the article linked to above, Bosko says he "got kind of caught in a paperwork snafu...when he came to Carthage he had to sit for a full year before he was able to play." Pierce Jr was at Kennedy-King College before Robert Morris.

After not appearing in Carthage's first 8 games this year, he started both games in Puerto Rico, averaging 18.5 points and 3.5 rebounds.  He was 12-20 (.600) from the field and 5-9 (.556) from 3.

Some Bosko quotes on Pierce's game from press releases after Carthage's last two games and the article above:

- "He hit the floor running. He's a really good offensive basketball player. He has a nice feel for the game. He has a very strong upper body and he shoots the ball with no fear."

- "Tony Pierce is nice offensive basketball player with a good feel for the game, and he shoots the ball with no fear."

- "Tony Pierce plays with ridiculous confidence, and he can shoot the deep three."

Someone to keep an eye on heading into CCIW play...and maybe beyond.  It seems like he might just be a sophomore athletically (he's the age of the guys who graduated in '14-15).

kenoshamark

The other change that came from the games in Puerto Rico was a new starting five.  Besides Pierce, Bosko started Ellis Matthews, Mike Leazer along with Kruse and Kedrowski.  What I found interesting was the previous starters (at least some of them) played no minutes or very few minutes in the two games.  Olson, Kozil, Valentine, McNellis, Lee and Stevenson had all been averaging double digit minutes with some strong individual games.   To then not see any playing time or what I presume to be minutes at the end of games seems rather bizarre.

I get that it's about wins and they got two of them, but now the sub minutes are going to younger players.  There are some exceptions with Matthews and Leazer being seniors and now starting, but sure is a drastic change for guys who have put in the time over the years.

Lets see how the rotations and the starting five shake out, but seems like you would want a stable lineup in place by now for the start of the conference season shortly.

sac

Ellis Matthews has been hurt, his shoulder popped out at the Olivet/Carthage game.  A pretty ugly looking injury, I'm sure he needed a few weeks after that one.

When reading the above article, linked in by Titan Q, something sounded eerily familiar. It seems this isn't the first time that one of Bosko's recruits has been bitten by, and been a victim of, the old "paperwork snafu" before being able to take the floor.

In both the current and former cases, there is/was neither any rumor nor any unnamed sources involved. Rather, the very similar quotes involved are Bosko's own.

In an article which appeared in the Racine Journal Times on 11/14/12 Bosko, in an interview discussing the prospects for his 2012-2013 Carthage team, stated "_______ will not be with us the first semester," Djurickovic said. "He has some paperwork issues to work through. We're planning on having him back for the second semester." (Actually, it turned out that the snafu involving the player in this instance also took a full year to resolve instead of just one semester).

In fact, there was quite a bit of discussion about the subject on the board at the time.
Excerpts from a couple of posts (Page 2043);

Well, this article from the Kenosha News should get things buzzing:

KENOSHA — There is a feel-good vibe coming from Tarble Arena. One piece missing.
The Red Men return a majority of last year's squad, but one noticeable absence is ___________. Calling it "paperwork eligibility issues" and "not a grade issue," Djurickovic said that (the player involved) could rejoin the team for the second semester.

And-

What in the world is a "paperwork eligibility issue"?

It seems Bosko has a knack for attracting players with paperwork "issues," and "snafus."
The above "What in the world" question, asked by one of our posters at the time of the first incident, appears to be a good one. Perhaps, however, the College just requires just too damn much paperwork be completed before Coach D is able to actually get some of his players into a Carthage uniform? ???  ;)

I have seen a lot of students struggle in my time working in highered.  Not everyone has an easy path from high school to college and from freshmen year to senior year.

No need for Bosko to go in to details as to why a student-athlete cannot play.

Paperwork issues that impact eligibility aren't exactly rare particularly when the athlete is transferring from a JuCo.  Bosko isn't rowing that boat single handedly.

Thus the Benedictine game looms pretty large for NCC and NPU has a big week coming with 2 games at Defiance.

NPU's game today -- which just tipped off -- is against a 7-3 Baldwin Wallace team that has looked pretty solid thus far this season. The Vikings will have to find a way to solve 6'2 guard Cam Kuhn, who is averaging a nasty 24.2 ppg and has shot 32-66 (.485) from downtown. In fact, the Yellow Jackets shoot .413 from beyond the arc as a whole.

Tomorrow the Vikings will face the other Yellow Jackets in the tourney field, Defiance. The hosts don't appear to be quite as good as Bald Wally, but they do have homecourt advantage. After a slow start to the season, Defiance has now won four straight and sits at 5-3 on the campaign.

This is going to be a challenging couple of days for the Park.

Maybe Robinson is the CCIW MOP in the making?  Amazing numbers.

'70

I saw Robinson play against Dubuque for the first time in person this past Saturday. He's a very athletic, fundamentally sound player - with amazing endurance.  MOP?  Not sure about that, but very happy he's in a NP uniform.

Jordan Robinson is very much in the running for CCIW Most Outstanding Player if he can keep up his numbers. They're not only MOP material (22.6 ppg, 11 rpg), they're first- or second-team All-American material. That's a very big "if", though. Nobody in this league is going to make it easy for him.

I'll take a reduction in his numbers if it means that NPU benefits as a team, though. Jordan would, too -- he's all about winning, rather than garnering individual accolades.

Exactly.

You seem to be taking a "where there's smoke, there's fire" attitude towards this, Mark, but I doubt that there's even any smoke here. In both cases, g.p.a. shortcomings on the part of the student-athlete in question were explicitly ruled out. As BW said, paperwork issues are pretty common for transfers, particularly juco transfers. Each course that the student-athlete took at his previous stop or stops has to be evaluated by the incoming school's admissions department for credit purposes. And the transcript evaluator at any four-year school worth its salt does a pretty rigorous job of this. Sometimes it's readily apparent to the layperson that a particular course doesn't pass muster in terms of being acceptable for transfer credit. Sometimes, though, it's a perfectly legitimate course that simply doesn't fit within the parameters of the incoming school. And sometimes it's a class that is acceptable for transfer credit but which doesn't fit the incoming school's course catalog in terms of being acceptable for a certain prerequisite.

In other words, the minutiae of academic evaluation is most likely what is referred to in both of the Carthage cases as "paperwork issues." They don't connote any sort of shenanigans at all on the part of either the student-athlete or of the incoming school. In fact, it's just the opposite; it's the school doing due diligence towards its academic responsibilities. They aren't always resolved overnight, either; sometimes it can take weeks or even months before the school is able to give a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down to transferring in a specific class taken at a previous school. There's no blame here on anybody. It's just the way that colleges and universities operate with regard to transfers.

(I wish that Rob Berki posted here more. He used to be the guy in NPU's admissions department who worked with transfers, and he can lay this all out with a lot more expertise than I can.)
