I don't see it as "backing off" as much as the fact that this room is filled with veteran posters who know all-too-well how unpredictable the tournament can be, and how natural it is to underestimate the abilities of an opponent whom you've never seen before.

BINGO!

That is a crazy play...I didn't realize they didn't even have the ball at the end of the game but that it was stolen on the inbounds

Memo

From:  Hon. Charles Schumer, NY

Re:  Haikus

There will be no haikus allowed in the United States.  There is a chance that because of the Oriental underpinnings of haikus that if allowed, the security of the country would be at stake.  Stop immediately.  However, if a union that supports my campaign, e.g. the longshoreman, say they like haikus, then let it snap.

We won't have haikus

Looks like a very good tourney is lined up.  Sorta stinks a little bit for NCC with a long road trip for the first game and then, if they win, a matchup w/ Lawrence.  I think NCC could give them a run for their money though.  It would be interesting to see a Simmons vs. Braier matchup (not sure if they would matchup against eachother but they are both forwards).

I think Augie got a pretty nice deal out of the whole thing.  Hopefully they can return to their form of a few weeks ago.  IWU will have a tough road, but then again, so does just about everyone in our bracket.

I'm just glad that I got a nice little regional at Transylvania, only a mile from my apartment.  It is a nice consolation for me since I don't live in the land of the CCIW anymore.  I'm really excited to get the opportunity to see Wooster play.

Good luck to all the teams in the tourney and lets hope we can get a CCIW team deep into the tourney.

No doubt about it, I do see things through green tinted specs, but I am  rooting for all 3 CCIW teams to make it to the sectional round. That would be great. But I do realize it most likely won't happen, based on past history. While the CCIW is a very tough conference, there are plenty of talented teams to face once the tournament gets here. And it is even tougher than the regular season to win on the road. But I will be rooting for IWU, NCC and Augie to go far in the tournament.

As one of the board's biggest pessimists, I am hardly underestimating any of the first roulnd opponents. However, I think all 3 of our teams have more talent than their first round opponents and should be the favorites. Barring upsets the second games for each team will be very tough evenly matched contests with IWU and NCC playing on the road.

I'm not nearly as confident about any of the second round games. Lawrence will clearly be the favorite on their home court and any game against a WIAC team means big time competition.

Brick

call it a bias but I like Augie in both of their games this next weekend.  I also will take IWU over Larry U...I'm not so sure about NCC but i've only seen them play twice this year.  I hope all CCIW teams do well this next week

I'm really excited to get the opportunity to see Wooster play.

Wooster consistently plays nine players; two of the three guards (Witucky, Cooper, Johnson) on the court at all times and sometimes all three.  Six of the nine are capable of hitting the three at any time.  Wooster has been in a funk on their three-point shooting the last several weeks; when they're on they've been putting up 100 points a game.  Vandervaart is a blue-collar workhorse in the center with a lot of double-doubles and Will is a capable replacement.  Port is more of a finessse player on the wing and likes to put up the 3 but will mix it up on the inside from time to time.  With the shot-clock off, watch for Wooster to clear out the lane and let Cooper go one-on-one to drive or pull up and hit the jumper.

On Saturday Wittenberg's tenacious defense took away the 3 in the first half.  Wooster went to a dribble-drive offense in the second half and was able to get Witt in a little bit of foul trouble and stay in the game.  Down by nine with 1:02 to go, Wooster proceeded to put 13 points on the board calmly trading threes and daring Witt to hit their free throws.  In the final analysis Wooster missed 11 free throws, many of them from their best free throw shooters.  Witt's defense had to have tired them out.

Two of their three losses have been to teams with strong inside play: Witt with 6'9-6'8 Russ and Borchers and BW with Tori Davis.  Enjoy.

Well, we should know the All-CCIW teams by about mid-afternoon today.    After seeing Augie and North Central again, I think I've changed my opinion on the M.O.P. issue.  If I had a vote, it would go to Anthony Simmons.  Tough call between Simmons and Harrigan, but I think Simmons was most dominant player in the league this year.

Titan Q,

While i agree with you about Simmons being a great player and very important to his team.  I will have to disagree in the fact that he was the best player of the CCIW season.  I think that Rick is far more important to his team.  Now, im not trying to be biased but im sure there is a little mixed in with my thoughts but i just don't see Augie winning very many games without Harrigan.  Now one might say that Simmons has the stat line far superior to Harrigans, but i think that Harrigan's stat line goes far past his scoring.  He draws so much attention when he is out on the floor I have seen defenses all geared up to limiting his touches all year (this allowing the Vikings to win huge games early on).  And i am not saying Simmons doesn't get this attention because i think he is a special player, but i think that Augie was in contention for the conf champ soley because of Harrigans dead eye shooting and slashing ability.

According to Pat Coleman's Top 25, the section headed by Amherst is the weakest with only a #4, 16, and 23.  Also, it has two byes.  The CCIW teams' region has nine ranked teams, including #1 Lawrence.  I'd love to watch a Lawrence/NCC game or Hope v Calvin, but I'll be in Bloomington IN watching the Big Ten wrestling tournament that weekend.   Hope has a tough road to the Final Four as they may face #12 Calvin and then #3 Wittenberg.

When was the last time IWU lost to Carroll?  I'd wager IWU beat the Pioneers 80% of the time, probably even more, when they were in the CCIW.  How has CCIW-dormat Carroll transformed itself into a winner?

IWU is 0-5 in D3 tournament games in the state of WI since switching to D3 in the 83/84 season, including a meaningless 3rd place regional game in 1984.

The Titans are 4-2 vs. Midwest Conf. teams with the 2 losses at Ripon in 1991 & 1999.

Against WIAC teams, IWU is 1-1 with both games vs. Whitewater. The Titans are 0-2 in games at Whitewater with one being the 3rd place loss to North Central in 84.

Time for redemption Friday.
