Brice Robinson ‏@Brice9R
Proud to say I will carry on the tradition of Oswego High School #42s next year at Illinois Wesleyan University! 🏀

Ron Rose and the Titans have landed Brice Robinson, a 6-7 forward from Oswego H.S..  Robinson averaged 15.9 points and 7.6 rebounds as a senior and was named Beacon-News area Player of the Year.  He was offered a scholarship by NCAA D2 UW-Parkside and was recruited heavily at the small college level.

I believe this is a significant addition for the Titans.

Unfortunately today's journalists don't have the space to provide a definition of differentiation for D3 schools every time an athlete commits.

Sure they do. They can call it a celebratory signing document rather than a letter of intent. OK, those first three words are a little bit longer than the second three words, but I'm sure that your average small-town newspaper article can squeeze them in. ;)

Joe Public knows what a LOI is.  If he sees "celebratory signing document", the most likely reaction absent broader context is 'wut?'.  I think it is oversimplifying to suggest that a writer (or his/her editor) can just sub one in for another and call it a day without deeper context.

Also: you might want to keep your tablet somewhere other than in a birdcage.  ::)

I just don't agree. Neither D3 as a whole nor most of its member schools are well-known enough for the general public to understand that the words "letter of intent" would mean something completely different for D3 student-athletes if it was applied to them, so they will always assume that the student-athlete in question is getting a scholie and that the school in question gives them out.

Journalists need to do their homework and find out that a "celebratory signing document" (which is a bit of a clunker as far as names go, admittedly) is not called the same thing as a "letter of intent" for a reason. And, heck, some journalists (like the one in Peotone) need to get their facts straight in the first place and call the document what it is.

The broader context can easily be supplied with a single sentence along the lines of, "As a member of NCAA Division III, Carroll does not give out athletic scholarships, so the celebratory signing document is non-binding." It's not rocket science. But even if the story doesn't include such a sentence, "Wut?" is still a better reaction from a reader than, "Way to go, kid! One of our Blue Devils just got a scholarship from Carroll University ... wherever the heck that is!" Confusing the readership is always better than misleading them.

You mean to tell me that the menfolk of Peotone don't all sit around the Victory Barbershop or the Wind Mill Cafe reading the print version of the Peotone Vedette and discussing the fortunes of the Blue Devils on the hardwood?

Perhaps I need to cut back on my viewings of Hoosiers.

I'm pretty sure this is a biggie and that this kid is a stud.

Bader was recruited by scholarship programs Benedictine (KS), Rockhurst, and Evangel.

Good example of how much contact goes into recruiting.  And this is just mail contact -- on top of this you've got phone calls, texts, and in-person visits.

Every bit as much effort goes into recruiting at the D3 level as it does in D1.

NCC RECRUIT

North Central tonight received a huge commitment, and is happy to announce that they have landed 6'7" 220 lb. F/C Sam Fehrle from Rockford Boylan HS. Sam averaged 13.0 PPG, 7.0 PRG, and 2.6 APG for a very good 27-3 Titans team. He shot 52% from the field, including 33% from three, and 81.1% from the line.
Sam is a versitile player who is expected to see action at both the 4 and 5 for the Cardinals. During the time he mans the center spot, 6'8" 1st team all-conference Alex Sorenson, who led the CCIW in 3 point shooting percentage, can move outside and pop from the corner.
Sam chose North Central over Augustana after a recent weekend stay on the Augie campus.
