IWU 32,

They were selling tickets right when the IWU/DePauw game ended.  Per the Whitewater website, you can call 262-472-2222 for tickets.

Quick thoughts on IWU/CC game last night.  IWU had alot of intensity the entire game and really caught CC napping to start the second half.  Zach Freeman played similar to the manner of which Shaq plays.  To Freeman's credit he played inspired ball all night,  but my take is he was playing against such inferior talent physically that if you were not at the game you would think the Titans played well.  Freeman totally bailed out a team subpar performance.

The only criteria that matters in a one & done format is winning and IWU did accomplish that.  Which team shows up tonight ?

Quote from: PointSpecial on March 04, 2006, 02:49:29 AMRegarding their opponent tomorrow... I think Whitewater had a little case of looking past an opponent.  They didn't seem to play with much urgency, and if they play the same way tomorrow, then IWU has the talent to blow them out of the water.

I've noticed this year that UWW sometimes plays down to the level of an inferior opponent. I haven't seen them since November, but I was struck back then by just how deep and physically talented they seemed -- and I saw them when Melvin Williams was still hurt. I think you're right about how necessary it is for them to show some urgency tonight, especially at the defensive end, because Wesleyan is on a whole different level than DePauw.

Quote from: PointSpecial on March 04, 2006, 02:49:29 AMThere's a great match-up, too, between Dauksas and Manchester.  Manchester this week was voted the WIAC Player of the Year, and he is Whitewater's leader.

My first thought when I looked at this four-team matchup after the bracket was posted last Monday was that Manchester vs. Dauksas would itself be worth the price of admission.

I'm really impressed with Jordan Delp's performance last night. For a kid who had been playing an average of four minutes per game to come out and not only score in double figures but direct traffic all night is really a testimony to him, and to Augustana's depth. Buena Vista may have been a 15-13 Cinderella, but they weren't the gimme that Wisconsin Lutheran or Maryville (MO) were. Neverthless, Augie is probably going to need for Drew Wessels to pull a Jordan -- not a Jordan Delp, but a Michael Jordan, as in Game 5 of the '97 NBA Finals in Utah -- in order to beat a UW-Stout team that beat them by four earlier this year up in Menomonie, WI.

As OS said, it's the CCIW vs. the WIAC, parts one and two, tonight. That's almost a guarantee that there should be some great basketball played in Rock Island and Whitewater.

Hoosier Titan

Overall, the Titans played just well enough last night, with an outstanding performance by Zach Freeman.  Both Old School and PointSpecial referred to the breakneck speed that sometimes was counterproductive--Dennie Bridges has been known to say that "sometimes this team plays like its hair is on fire."  When it works, it's brilliantly effective; last night it was more than a little sloppy at times.  If anyone's 3's had been falling, things would have looked a lot different.  Tonight the Titans will need the three, along with the inside game, defensive intensity, and free-throw shooting that carried them last night.

Old School was disappointed in the IWU crowd and thought the Carroll fans were louder--did you notice that they were mostly students, while the IWU fans are (ahem) mostly older than that (myself included)?  Student sections tend to be a good deal louder, rowdier, and (like Carroll's last night) occasionally more profane than adult fan sections.  We do the best we can!

I'm looking forward to a good game tonight.

IWU got a tremendous performance out of junior Zach Freeman last night.  29 pts & 10 rebounds...that was really the story of the game, as posted here already.  Carroll just didn't have anyone who could handle Freeman.  I was impressed by the Pioneers though.  They reminded me of a good Hanover team - solid at every spot, smart, very efficient offense.

UW-Whitewater is enormous, like every good WIAC team I have ever seen.  IWU, a big Division III team, will be at a size disadvantage this evening.  The Titans will need to get Whitewater running.  I don't think IWU can win a 60-58 type game...the score is going to have to be in the 70's to favor the Titans.

The Warhaws are about 25 points better than DePauw, but they played real uninspired basketball for stretches last night.  I expect tonight to be a different story.

Cory Jones attacked the bucket with some of that same intensity... but I didn't like how he tried to finish.  Sure, he had 4 baskets and 10 points, but on the 5 he missed, he was literally at point-blank range, and all he had to do was lay it up softly off the board, and it would have been 2 points.  He repeatedly tried this flippy-finger-roll that slipped right off the front of the rim... and, like I said, these were right at the basket, after he'd beaten his defender.  They were essentially free points, and the game, down the stretch, was much closer because of it.

Point, Cory Jones (4-9 from the field last night) was the CCIW's FG% leader this year, shooting .624 in league play...

The flippy-finger rolls usually go in quite a bit.

Late nite

Wessels had 103 fever last night at game time---very doubtful for tonight---hoping for a miracle recovery---tough kid---don't count him out yet

Congrats to the Titans and Vikings for Friday night's victory.  I am personally glad to see the Wheaton women win in their first round game as well.

Based on the game reports, it sounds like Wesleyan didn't play to their potential.  This has been mentioned with regard to Whitewater, but not with regard to Wesleyan.  At their best, how many points is Wesleyan better than Carroll?

Bob's right with his idea that Wesleyan needs this game to be in the 70s or higher - and regardless on how well Whitewater plays, if the Titans step it up as well, this game may be out of reach.

Of the 4 teams at the Augustana Regional, Augie had the most fan base.  Right now it is Spring Break at Augustana which could be a reason the turnout was a little slimmer.
the first game UW Stout vs. Carleton was a great game.  Carleton was down by as many as 8 and had a final chance ( possession) to win it.
I think Augie has to "clean it up" a bit to be able to knock off UW Stout.  There were too many errant passes, missed shots, and turnovers in their game vs. Buena Vista.
I thought the key last night for Augie was Swetalla inside, getting BV's interior guys into foul trouble.
Should be an exciting game tonight.  Good luck to Augie/IWU and congrats to NC for a great season.

Wow, that's a bold statement.  I have yet to see Augie play, but I thought I read that some important part of Augie's team has just come back from injury, yet they only lost by 4.  I wasn't at the game, so maybe if BlueDevilBob or Stoutguy checks the CCIW page, they can give us a little more insight.  Not to say that Stout isn't good, but you claim that Augie needs a [Michael] Jordan-type performance from one of their players, that's saying a lot!  ;D

You really think Whitewater is that big?  I think Freeman is going to be unstoppable tonight like he was last night.

The Manchester/Dauksas should pretty special.  Manchester was WIAC POTY.  Like I said, Whitewater forgot their defense last night. They should remember to set the alarm tonight.  Looking foward to a battle.

Yeah, I realize the IWU crowd is a little more older than some crowds and obvoiusly the Carroll fan section (students).  Aren't there any students that go to IWU?  ;D  To be honest, Point's reserved section, the retired/older folk are a lot more vocal than our student section...I guess that could be a rip on the students at Point!  But yeah, of course they aren't going to be louder than the Carroll student section, but even after that monster dunk by Freeman, it was pretty quiet down there.  They didn't get on their feet until they knew they had the game won.

Maybe it's your fault for building up the traveling support of the IWU faithful! lol.

Bold statements abound!  Whitewater didn't win the WIAC regular season and the conference tourney on good looks and charming personality...but "out of reach"?  Ouch!  ???
