Carroll continues to be an enigma, as the Pioneers are trailing by 19 at the half to a Dallas team that is 3-5, with two of those three wins coming against Bible schools.

The UWSP live stats operator will no doubt fix it at haftime.

Thus far, this game is classic Pointers basketball. It's one of those nights when you wonder whether or not the other school and UWSP would play a football game that had a bigger final score than the basketball game. That sort of thing does not bode well for NCC. Right now the Cards can't buy a basket to save their lives, and Sorenson is totally invisible.

Carroll loses to Dallas, 72-67. The Pioneers made a game of it by mounting a furious comeback in the first eleven minutes of the second half to erase that 19-point halftime deficit and bring the game to a 54-54 tie, and they even took the lead briefly a couple of times in the final five minutes. But the Crusaders went on an 8-0 run in the final two minutes to claim the contest. Kyle Keranen had 24 and Ben Widdes had 15, but Tanner Zaeske, the CCIW's fifth-leading scorer at 16.8 ppg, had only four points on 2-10 shooting (including 0-5 from downtown, where he had been a 45% shooter this season until tonight).

Elmhurst is down to Mary Hardin-Baylor at the half, 58-45. UWSP and NCC might not score that much between them for their entire game.

Middlebury beats IWU, 77-75, on a Jack Daly pull-up in the lane with 1.6 seconds left.

Great game, Titans just coming up one possession short of coming back from 13 down.  Strange foul and Tech on Seibring with 2 minutes to go taking him out with five fouls.

Nothing strange about it. The personal foul was obvious, as he clearly hit Daly. Seibring and Daly had been jaw-jacking and colliding with each other for several minutes before that final confrontation that resulted in the dual T's. At one point Seibring was down on the floor and Daly offered him his hand to pull him up, and Seibring declined it. Seibring looked to be in pain at the end of the game, but, pain aside, he had to be smarter that that in that confrontation, since he had just picked up his fourth foul on the play. Refs don't tend to be sympathetic to 6'8, 235 guys who are verbally and physically locking horns with 6'3, 190 guys.

Middlebury is just flat-out quicker than Illinois Wesleyan, Mark, plain and simple. The Titans are a better outside shooting team than Middlebury, and have a better inside game, but the Panthers are one of those quick teams that give the Titans fits.

I saw a little of the game,  but Ron Rose's comments after the game, and I'm paraphrasing, "it was tough losing Tyler with two minutes left in the game and I will defend him on the call" seems to be sour grapes.  They had a pretty significant lead and let it get away.

NCC 47, Point 47 with 7:53 left.

Big time sour grapes. Daly and Seibring were put on notice not two minutes before. No excuse for the big fella losing his composure there. That's entirely on him.

Meanwhile, on the other end of the stylistic spectrum, Elmhurst fell to Mary Hardin-Baylor down in central Texas, 108-93. Jake Rohde had a jaw-dropping night, scoring 38 on 12-24 shooting (incluing 7-14 from beyond the arc), with six assists on top of that. Jalen Loving had a 21 and 13 double-double, and Nathan Rogers added 11 rebounds as well.

Thus, the CCIW had a disastrous day, going 1-4 ... with only Millikin able to carry the water for the league.

Massey isn't fully updated yet in terms of registering last night's games, but here's how it looks at the moment:

    6. North Park
  18. Illinois Wesleyan
  22. Augustana
  36. North Central
  64. Carthage
  72. Carroll
  96. Wheaton
148. Elmhurst
284. Millikin

Massey sez:

North Park 93, Manchester 70 (NPU 97%, Man U 3%)
Sul Ross State 76, Elmhurst 75 (SRSU 52%, EC 48%)
Wheaton 80, Hardin-Simmons 78 (WC 54%, HSU 46%)

There is no prediction for Millikin @ Wittenberg, but since the Tigers are #75 and at home, I'm sure that if there was a prediction it wouldn't be a pretty one as far as the Decaturites are concerned. Similarly, no prediction exists for Illinois Wesleyan vs. Bridgewater in NYC, but since Bridgewater is #169, I'm sure that the HAL 9000 would predict the easy victory for the Titans that I think most or all of us are expecting.

The Hardin-Simmons win over Salisbury (#8 on Massey) wasn't registered yet, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Massey formulae would flip the favorite in that Wheaton vs. HSU contest in light of that big upset by the Cowboys in Vegas over the Steaks.

I tried watching some of Manchester's game at Bethel (IN) last night, but it was so one-sided that I turned it off, since it was obvious that I wasn't going to really learn much about the Spartans. The Pilots eviscerated Man U to the tune of 101-67 in a game in which the Pilots led by 40 points with about eight minutes to go, but I'm not sure how much that really means. Bethel (IN) is and has been an NAIA powerhouse for a long time, and, like their Crossroads League rival Indiana Wesleyan, the Pilots look more like a D2 team than your garden-variety NAIA outfit.

Adrian Johnson, a 5'11 sophomore guard, was last season's d3hoops.com Great Lakes Region FOY, and he's certainly a pretty talented player. He and 6'1 junior (and Chicago native) Kenny Doss looked like the only Spartans who belonged on the floor with the Pilots. The other double-digit scorer on the season besides Johnson is 6'5 senior forward Tyler Alexander. When the HCAC gurus looked at the fact that the Spartans had three starters coming back, one of whom was Johnson, and that the team was adding the leading scorer and second-leading rebounder from HCAC rival Defiance as a transfer (Alexander), I'm sure that it seemed reasonable to them to pick Man U to finish fourth out of ten in that league's preseason poll. It obviously hasn't gone as well as had been predicted for the Spartans thus far, but it's not because they've lost any of the players whom they were expected to use.

On paper this looks like an easy win for NPU. But the Park has been off since the Trine game eight days ago, while Manchester played yesterday, so there may be some rust involved on the NPU side. In an empty gym against an opponent whose season would have a genuine highlight if it could knock off the #13 team in the country, there is no room for complacency here on the part of the Vikings.
