Very surprised to see the addition of Kramer to the CCIW and the NCC program.

Very surprised to see TEN guys 6"6" or taller on the Augie roster this past season.  ::)

Help me with your point AO.

Why is that?

Nothing other than my nephew, who played with Nick, had said he wasn't getting looks from CCIW schools.

He could be a particularly strategic example of what a lot of people call a "program player" (i.e., someone who is recruited as a roster-filler, so that a coach can make his recruiting quota, fill out his JV team, or for any of a number of other reasons). Since his dad is the head basketball coach at a nearby high school, this could be a way for the NCC coaching staff to stay in the Naperville Central coach's good graces.

Can't speak for other teams but NCC has a couple of recruiters who are masters of disguise. Often times they can be in attendance without almost anyone in the crowd being aware of their presence. 🕵️‍♀️

Actually, it was pretty widely known within the CCIW that if Nick was going to play at the next level, NCC would be his destination. So, it's not surprising there wasn't a lot of CCIW representation at Naperville Central games.

Just surprised that Giovanine would recruit that many. I mean how many can play at the same time or even play at all. Of the 10, only Brett Benning, who had a very good initial season, is not a forward or center. Only 2 others averaged playing more than ten minutes a game. Five did not even make the Augie varsity team.

Wrong and more wrong.

1. North Central does not recruit "program players." If they don't feel a kid might eventually be able to contribute, they don't waste time recruiting him solely for numbers purposes.
2. Todd Raridon does not have a recruiting "quota" so there is no need to bring in X amount of players for any purpose, tuition related or not. North Central has had a record number of applicants/new students several times in recent years.
3. Naperville Central and North Central have a solid, long-term relationship within both the academic and athletic administrations and staffs. This includes the relationship between Coach Raridon and Coach Kramer which would remain solid whether or not Nick Kramer plays at NCC. Naperville Central teams have practiced at NCC several times when their gym was under repair or unavailable due to non athletic related events. Good graces abound.  :)

LOL, Greg.  I was gonna respond that this seemed awfully reminiscent of the complaints that IWU was 'hoarding' guards, but this response is a classic!  Since the Titans are graduating a fair amount of their 'bigs', maybe Rose and Giovanine can get into trade talks! :D

We have this "hoarding" conversation so often that I figured it needed its own meme.

LOL, Ypsi. I like it.  :)
IWU has ELEVEN guards eligible to return.  ::)
I think, based on height alone, that Giovanine should ask Rose for 3 guards in exchange for 2 bigs.  ;D

Yes, a good trade indeed.  IWU program has had a surplus of guards, perimeter shooters for some time. Harder to replace Bausch and Seibring.  I'm still hoping for Victor Davis' 'lil brother, or another incarnation of the Jones twins.  Does Schwer have a kid coming up soon?  I'll be watching.

Baseball has begun . . . go Cubbies.  Let's play two, make it two in a row.

Admittedly my experience with Augustana is limited but from it I've gotten the impression that Giovanine, however you may feel about him, seems to have a pretty good handle on recruiting.  Of course that doesn't necessarily mean that they are all significant recruits.

Sometimes you just get lucky on the recruiting trail, end up with more than you thought you would get and you just roll with it.  It is not like we hand out athletic scholarships!  While I think Bosko is the best at working with what he has --- Coach G does a pretty good job of that, too.  And, in D3 like other divisions the lack of PT sometimes levels out the field.

They all come for the pre-med program...

Some of the credit for Augustana's remarkable success at bringing in bigs has to belong to Grey Giovanine's second chair, Tom Jessee. As a former Augustana center himself, he knows what to look for and has a good eye for spotting bigs who can succeed on this level.

Although Augie's go-to recruiting zone is the western suburbs, the program has always been great at recruiting the northwestern corner of the state, where the likes of Monmouth and Knox simply can't compete and other CCIW coaches seldom go for recruiting purposes. Former Illinois Wesleyan star Victor Davis (Galesburg), who seems to be iwu70's non-operatic obsession at the moment, and North Park threepeat power forward Jim Clauson (Rock Island), were rare exceptions. And Augie has likewise always been very good at crossing the Big Muddy and bringing back kids from the eastern edge of Iowa, kids that eschew the in-state likes of the IIAC schools or Augie's former Quad Cities NAIA rival St. Ambrose.

(checks recent NCAA tournament brackets...)

It seems to be working out well for them as a strategy.  I don't know that anyone is really in a good position to poke holes in what Grey has done to build a program geared for sustained success over there on the muddy banks...

Maybe the obsession is because Victor Davis did pretty well in IWU's intramural opera league...
