Mr. Ypsi

I had noticed how outwardly, at least, calm and stoic he was at the game I attended.  I'm also not surprised at his seating choice (which I'm sure could have been anywhere he wanted!) - at the game I attended (and I got the impression it was his standard spot), he 'held court' on a stool on the walk-way ABOVE the bleachers.  Both the distant location and the 'stoic' demeanor I take as conscious attempts to not 'cast a shadow' over his current coach - it's hard enough to 'follow a legend'; imagine if 'the legend' is still around as the AD!

I was disappointed (though certainly not surprised) that he had no recollection of me - I had been the 7th man on his 6-man tennis team a 'mere' 37 years before!  (Life in d3 [though we were then NAIA] - even 'living-legends-to-be' still have to coach other sports AND teach PE classes!)

Larry Schiner the AD at NJCU usually stands in the same type of place.  He watches large portions of games from the indoor track that is above the basketball courts at the school.  Maybe it is the old coach in them, they leave coaching but coaching doesn't leave them.  At NJCU it is a great place to see the entire game.  You can see the whole court and still be close enough to make out everything and everyone.

Speaking of AD's.  The AD from Lawrence was very rude to the IWU fans sitting in my section.  I think most of the fans were the IWU JV hoops team.  The AD came over to tell them that they could not stand during the game, yell at a LU player, and yell anything negative during the game.  To be honest, the fans weren't doing anything but sitting there waiting for the game to start.  The AD should have been more worried about finding everyone a seat or even concentrating on his own LU student section that was basically on the court.

I actually had a lot of fun sitting with the JV players.  The were all incredibly nice and they showed sportsmanship during the entire game.

Congrats to IWU for a nice victory.  Freeman was the man and he would get my vote for the team's MVP.

Good luck tonight.

Johnny Augie

Great season for Augie and both Harrigan and McAdams-Thorton.  They were fun to watch all year and they deserve a lot of credit for winning the CCIW title.

I would have really liked to see how much the game would have changed if Wessels was in the lineup.  With Wessels, I think the turnovers would have been lower and he would have gotten the ball down the court much quicker.  Not only that, he plays incredible defense and it would have been nice to have him guard the ball.

On a side note:

I always thought Coach G was bad with being all over the court during a game, but the coach from LU was ten times as bad.  He walks the whole sideline from scoring table to baseline and has no problem with being ten feet out on the court.  What was more surprising is that it didn't bother the refs.

The last time I saw a team so hot to start a game was when IWU was at Augie for Senior Nght (Thomas, Carstens, Clemets...) and IWU started the game 28-3.  Last night, LU put on a 3-point shooting clinic to start the game.  It was amazing, they never missed.  They also had 15 assists on 16 made shots in the first half.  Not bad.

Couldn't agree with you more---Wessels would have completely neutralized PS point guard without any help, and there wouldn't have been the open threes that were the difference in the game

lol!

As I posted on the CCIW Pickems, if I had known ahead of time that Wessels would not be able to play, I would have at least SERIOUSLY considered picking UPS.  Sounds like his absence may have been key to the game - NOT an excuse, just an observation.

no, I agree, guard play is a key for sure aganist the Loggers; just taking a shot for fun.....how about the foul feast here with the IWU/UPS game?  How deep is IWU?

VERY, but especially at forward/center.  If we lose Dauksas, we may be in trouble.

Congrats to the Titans -- fabulous.  Congrats to the Titan nation for all the support of this great team.  Congrats to Coach Trost and all those who work for and support the program.

Well, ladies and gentlement, IWU has finally shown up.  This was just an incredible game.  I can't believe this is only the elite eight.  If any games next weekend are even half as exciting as this one, it will be well worth it.

Both teams were excellent.  I can't say enough about it.  These IWU seniors would just not let it get away from them.

I haven't posted since NCC was eliminated from the tournament.  I'll post my thoughts on NCC's season later.  However, I'd like to congratulate IWU, Augie, and NCC for great seasons and I'll be pulling for IWU to cut down the nets in Salem!
