Quote from: BobbyO on November 04, 2019, 03:59:04 PMI would like to see both in the game at the same time.  Good reserves on the bench so the need to protect them from foul trouble is not as great as last year. During my time at Augustana we enjoyed height and used Lang and Hamming at the same time.  The game is faster so that may be  why they wouldn't.

You rebutted your own desire quite effectively, Bobby. This isn't 1973, and Martin and Ferguson aren't Laing (proper spelling) and Hamming. College basketball is a very different sport now than it was a half-century ago. Using two relatively slow-moving players like that simultaneously in 2019 is an invitation to get run off of the floor by your opponent. Besides, neither Martin nor Ferguson shoots well enough from beyond twelve feet to merit playing them together, because they'll both have to remain close to the basket on offense, naturally collapsing the interior defense and clogging any possibility for the Augie perimeter players to drive.

They're ideal as a relay rather than as a tandem. And that's exactly how Grey Giovanine has used them, as a relay. Big men tire more quickly than everybody else, and having both Martin and Ferguson available allows Giovanine to go the full forty minutes without having either one of them wear down.

Besides, as I've said before, Pierson Wofford is one of the best power forwards in the league, if not the entire region. Why ruin that by sticking two centers on the floor next to him?

I have heard the #3- North Central vs Eureka scrimmage yesterday in Naperville was close.  Any scoop?

I was not able to attend yesterday afternoon so have no firsthand info to relate.
From what I was able to "scoop" North Central, despite the fact that PG Aaron Jones was unable to participate, won the first half by 13, and the second by 4. I guess some people would consider this "close." Others, probably not so much. From what I understand, NCC was led by Will Clausel with primary support from Matt Cappelletti, Mike Pollack, and Aiden Chang.

* Doug Wallen: 13 pts, 8 reb, 2 assists
* Pete Lambesis: 8 pts, 2 reb
* Keondre Schumacher: 7 pts, 6 reb
* Charlie Bair: 6 pts, 11 reb
* Grant Wolfe: 6 pts, 6 assists

The Titans were down 10-0 to start and really had trouble out of the gates - a number of fairly unforced turnovers and missed shots.  It was 36-18 at the half.

IWU shot it atrociously all night.  The Titans were 22-73 FG (30%) and 2-23 3-point (9%).  It was as poorly as I've ever seen an IWU team shoot the basketball.  Some guys who are really good shooters couldn't throw it in the ocean.  Keondre Schumacher, Cory Noe, and Gavin Markgraff were 0-11 combined, for example.

IWU played much better in the 2nd half and had the lead down to 13 with 8:00 to play.  The Titans really looked good in those first 12 minutes of the 2nd.  But it was all SIU down the stretch.

IWU battled hard the whole game and actually rebounded it very well all night.  The Titans out-rebounded SIU 47-41.

This is the first time I've seen the Titans play this year (online) and I left this ugly game pretty excited about the season actually.  IWU has a lot of talent on this team, and I think the starting group of Grant Wolfe, Keondre Schumacher, Doug Wallen, Pete Lambesis, and Charlie Bair form a very nice nucleus.  I believe the bench players will settle down and play better as the early part of the season goes on, and I believe the team as a whole will end up being a good shooting team.

IWU does need to get 6-7 Matt Leritz back though to have the kind of season they want to have.  What he brings is exactly what they are currently missing.

It's clear IWU is going to be a work in progress the early part of this season, trying to fit all of these new parts together.

Good warm up experience.  IWU opens a week from today vs Blackburn.

It must of been a thrill for Yoder and Mitchell to get out on a DI floor as freshmen.

IWU has two talented freshmen in 6-0 PG Luke Yoder and 6-7 F Cody Mitchell.  I think both will take several games to settle in, but I'll bet by about January 1 they'll be very productive members of the rotation.

I'm predicting the same timeline for the same status, and likely even a starting role, for Jack McDonald at Augie.  He's not just that talented, he's that strong-minded, that heady, and that much of a leader.  And I suspect he and Grey are getting along just fine.  He's the right kind of scrappy.

Augie dropped both halves of a scrimmage last night to Benedictine, 31-27 and 34-30.

I wonder if that says more about Augustana or more about Benedictine.

Tonight, #2 UW-Oshkosh at #17 Augustana.  The defending champs of the two best leagues in Division III go head to head.  Great stuff.
