Final from Elmhurst:

North Central 76
Elmhurst 74

Two very good teams, but just had that feeling that North Central was going to find a way to get this win.

A game that close hinges on countless plays, but the one that jumps out at me was when Elmhurst had the ball while trailing 74-72 with 25 seconds left. Nick Perry beat his man and drove the lane; Connor Raridon could've stepped in his path, but, with four fouls, it was clear that Raridon didn't want to risk having a blocking foul called on him, so he stayed out of Perry's way. Perry got to the far side of the rim -- and missed the layup. Will Clausel grabbed the rebound, Lavon Thomas (who looked All-World this afternoon for EC) had to expend his fifth foul on Clausel in order to stop the clock, and NCC's chances to hold the lead and get the win shot way up.

A few Elmhurst fans had to be doing the Kubrick Stare after this one. They lost this one exactly how they lost so many games last year, faltering down the stretch in the second half. It's just one game and they weren't going to go undefeated. How they respond to a tough home loss will say a lot about whether they are still for real or not.

Sean Johnson had himself a game for Carthage this evening, recording 25 points and 15 rebounds against Alma.

Not to add insult to injury, but the thing that stands out to me are the three Elmhurst technical fouls.

Absolutely.  I watched this one from start to finish and left shaking my head about the three technicals.  Elmhurst gave up 4 points on technical fouls in a game they lost by 2.

* 10:33 1st: Jay Militello (2 points) - T for arguing about a call against him...a call that was a no-brainer.  Milletto was basically heading towards this T the entire possession (had been complaining about a previous call on the same possession).

* 12:50 2nd: Wesley Hooker (1 point) - after his own basket, T for grabbing the ball after it went through the basket...probably made worse by his flexing immediately after grabbing the ball.

* 8:04 2nd: Lavon Thomas (1 point) - T for shoving Connor Raridon in frustration after being called for a foul.

I don't think any of these actions were all that egregious, but each was just incredibly dumb -- no brainer T's.  You can't really shoot yourself in the foot like this and hope to win the league.

I think Elmhurst might be the most talented team in the league.  But the Bluejays need to play smarter and clean this kind of stuff up.

I thought NCC played like a veteran team in the final 10 minutes (Elmhurst generally owned the first 30).  In particular, Matt Cappelletti, Connor Raridon, Blaise Meredith, Will Clausel, and Aiden Chang all really stood out to me as making huge plays.

The Cardinals will be right in the middle of the CCIW race because they have a lot of very experienced play makers.

Really big road win vs a contender for NCC.

Here is something I tweeted yesterday after watching the Elmhurst broadcast...

.@ElmhurstBluejay/@elmhursthoops, I love that you have the replay feature on the broadcast but you're missing too much live game action.  Just my opinion here but no need to show a replay after every basket...maybe just an occasional replay during a dead ball? #d3hoops

I think Elmhurst has the best quality production in the CCIW, and their play-by-play broadcaster is great.  But I'd ask whoever is in charge to reconsider how the replay is being used.  Immediately after every basket they cut to a replay and miss the ball getting taken up the floor and the early part of the offense on the other end.  It's just super annoying and hard to watch.  (I can't imaging watching Elmhurst vs Grinnell or Greenville.)

[And for the record, back when I was connecting to American Online via dial up to try to listen to the parts of audio-only streams that were not buffering I never envisioned getting this picky.]

WUPHF

I did appreciate that they were showing replays of North Central plays, but yeah, Elmhurst needs to limit the replays to breaks in action for the most part.

Augustana and Illinois Wesleyan are going to overtime in an exciting, tooth-extraction kind of basketball game.

Chris and Dan are pushing the needle into the red zone in terms of entertainment value. I love listening to those guys call a game!

Illinois Wesleyan 74
Augustana 67

Kudos to Wesleyan for winning an Augustana-style game against Augustana on Augustana's home court.

Mr. Ypsi

I think Augie and IWU probably traded knock-out punches today.  The Titan women were ranked #22; the west Vikings beat 'em.  The Augie men were #23, the Titans beat 'em.  I suspect both teams have fallen to ORV this week.

Not sure it was that good a game (awfully sloppy by both teams from time to time), but you couldn't ask for a much more exciting game! :o
