Titans beat an outstanding Augie team tonight. Bair? Ice in his veins to make that three. I'm grateful, and I'm impressed. But how many times do you gotta eat leather before you realize you're a 6 foot guard driving on a 6-10 defender?

Wheaton goes into the Christmas break at 8-2 and 3-0 (2 road wins) atop the conference standings. Incredible coaching job by Mike Schauer. He got Luke Anthony back from the football team and in his first significant action last night he led the team in scoring with 21 pts going 6-12 from the field and 4-8 from the arc. Anthony adds another option to this offense and the Thunder defense has been formidable so far this season. The Thunder rank 2nd in the conference in defense and tied for league lead in 3pt shooting (41%).

* Grant Wolfe: 14 pts, 7 reb, 3 assists
* Charlie Bair: 13 pts, 5 reb
* Doug Wallen: 9 pts, 7 reb

* Pierson Wofford: 16 pts, 11 reb
* Austin Elledge: 15 pts
* Micah Martin: 11 pts, 8 reb

The Titans really earned a gutty, grind-it-out road win today.  There wasn't too much pretty about that game, but I loved IWU's 2nd half effort.

IWU played 10 guys today and got big contributions from 9 of them (all but Cody Mitchell's 3 minutes).  This is a very balanced teams that relies on different guys stepping up in big situations.

Not much will show in the boxscore, but Alex O'Neill did a really nice job defensively today in his 22 minutes.  He was on Micah Martin most of that time, and Martin is a load.

Having Grant Wolfe back (missed Anderson, Wheaton, and Carthage) is big for IWU.  In a lot of ways he seems to make this team go.

IWU has knocked off #22-Carthage and #23-Augustana in its last two.  Next up, #9-Wash U.

Great win for the TITANS up in Rock Island.  Bair and O'Neill are a load.  Great to have Wolfe back, though Yoder did a superb job in his absence.  Let's go for three ranked-team wins in a row . . .

Yoder was the replacement for Wolfe.  With Wolfe back, Yoder still seemed to be in as much as ever.  Who is it that has lost time?

Micah Martin is a BEAST.  Anyone got a measuring tape - he's gotta be more than 6'11"!  At times he was definitely a man among boys (and our front-line 'boys' ain't no pygmies).  (Though I also thought he should have fouled out by about midway thru the second half.  Whatever the official stats show, he must have had 12-15 blocks, but I thought he fouled with his body on at least half of them.)

When Pierson Wofford picked up his 4th foul barely into the second half, I thought we had the game definitely won.  My congratulations to him on never picking up foul #5 (and congratulations to Coach Giovanine on ignoring "general wisdom" and playing him much of the rest of the game - you lose in regulation if he was on the bench).

The 2019-20 season may end up seeing a lot of Division III coaches hit significant milestones throughout. On Sunday's Hoopsville, Dave chats with three coaches who have already won milestone games this season.

Whether it's 500 or 600, the milestone is a sign of a coach who not only has been coaching a long time, but also successful at coaching. That is certainly the case for the three coaches on Sunday' show.

Plus, we look ahead at the final Top 25 polls before the holidays. Who might move up or down and which teams should either get more or less attention.

Hoopsville is presented by D3hoops.com and airs from the WBCA/NABC Studio. You can watch Sunday's show On Demand in the following ways:

Here is something I tweeted yesterday after watching the Elmhurst broadcast...

.@ElmhurstBluejay/@elmhursthoops, I love that you have the replay feature on the broadcast but you're missing too much live game action.  Just my opinion here but no need to show a replay after every basket...maybe just an occasional replay during a dead ball? #d3hoops

I think Elmhurst has the best quality production in the CCIW, and their play-by-play broadcaster is great.  But I'd ask whoever is in charge to reconsider how the replay is being used.  Immediately after every basket they cut to a replay and miss the ball getting taken up the floor and the early part of the offense on the other end.  It's just super annoying and hard to watch.  (I can't imaging watching Elmhurst vs Grinnell or Greenville.)

[And for the record, back when I was connecting to American Online via dial up to try to listen to the parts of audio-only streams that were not buffering I never envisioned getting this picky.]

To be blunt: they shouldn't be showing a replay after every single made basket. That isn't in the broadcasting 101 playbook.

When I train/oversee productions especially with students, I never teach this technique except possibly in football (soccer being a completely different story; all sports are unique). In basketball, you can't show a highlight of a made basket immediately following for the simple fact that the game hasn't stopped to allow it. Sure, show a close-up of the guy/gal who hit the shot (hero shot), but not a replay. And even in the close-up, the production must be able to react immediately for something else that might be happening on the court. Whether it is a steal or something, the action on the floor ALWAYS i more important than a replay. A replay can be shown whenever, even 20 minutes later if absolutely necessary. Also, not every basket is worth seeing again. No one needs to see a simple layup for a second or third time. No one needs to see every basket go through the net ... again.

Who ever is guiding these students is likely not teaching properly. It is fine for them to make mistakes and make adjustments. One learns best that way, but the best technique I use when teaching is to have students watch network productions. Sure, the network broadcasts have a lot of bells and whistles, but the basics are the same. There is a main camera that follows the action. The director doesn't switch off that camera except when a hero shot is needed or the game stops due to a whistle. (There are times in lacrosse, soccer, and other sports where a close-up during action works fine, but you have to know when to use these shots.) Then you can use the other camera shots to show what else is going on and replay to show what had happened.

I get frustrated watching productions were those running things think they have to show all the bells and whistles ALL of the time. The Super Bowl has 50+ cameras. Can anyone remember the last time they saw all 50 camera shots in one drive? Let alone seen them all in one entire game?

Learn to use the tools properly to put the best broadcast on the air ... don't frustrate the viewers at home because you refuse to learn to do it better.

I am really glad to see Ron Rose made the decision to play Wolfe and Yoder together a lot.  Wolfe is one of IWU's most important players, so he needs to be out there.  But I want Yoder on the floor as much as possible too -- he is just a really good player that does so many things well.  His poise and maturity on the floor are impressive.

The minutes tend to work out - they come from a combination of Keondre Schumacher, Cory Noe, and Pete Lambesis.  But it works out pretty nicely - Rose can pick and choose matchups based on what's going on in the game.

Wolfe and Yoder were on the floor together down the stretch today most of the time.  It helps to have two good ball handlers,  decision makers, and FT shooters out there in big moments.

Yes.  It was nice to see Anthony basically just pick up where he left off last season.  And I'm as surprised and delighted as anyone to see Wheaton atop the league even after just 3 games.

Notwithstanding the parity in the league this season, I can't shake the sense that North Central is still the team to beat.  Watching that same veteran team wear down Elmhurst yesterday to get an important road win was confirming.  And in Raridon, they will always have the best player(in my opinion) on the floor in every contest.

Wheaton and NCC will face each other when conference play resumes Jan 4 at the Hangar.  And then it will be nothing but consequential games every Wed and Sat in the CCIW for the next 5-6 weeks.

Congrats to Ron Rose on career win #250 today!

Wheaton, quite unexpectedly to most CCIW observers if they're being honest, has been doing a great job with not just a couple, but several players stepping up and making significant contributions. Especially noteworthy is the fact that they've been getting it done without their best player, Luke Anthony, who has now returned following Wheaton's unexpected 3rd round exit from the football playoffs. Beyond what Anthony's return adds, the Orange team also gains a valuable sub who has accumulated a nice chunk of experience and development during Luke's absence.

Mike Schauer talks about the culture on his team in his post game video after NPU. In particular he mentions the team has "an edge to them on defense" and really enjoys playing hard on that end of the floor. He goes on to say he has had only a couple other teams in his time at Wheaton who have had that and it makes them hard to play against.

I am a big believer in defense and I think, on the basketball floor, much of it is simply desire and intensity. Of course you have to be in in the right place and have the right technique, but you have to want to stay in front of people and this Thunder team has a desire to do that right now.

Completely agree.

The Nightmare on Kedzie Street continues.  In North Park's 34 point loss to Wheaton, no Viking scored in double digits and only one player scored more than seven.  18-51 from inside the trey line.

Tonight versus Knox might be the only game to win against an NCAA opponent this year.
