Augustana 83
Carthage 81

Crazy ending at Carver as well.

I don't know what's the craziest moment in the last 9 seconds:
1. Crishawn Cook gets called for a carry a move both teams did all night without getting called previously
2. Cook while trying to hit the rim since Carthage was down 2 fakes a free throw 2x on the last attempt with 2 seconds left and it wasn't called
3. The ball clearly hits the rim, but the refs blow the play dead giving Carthage the advantage on trying to tie the game by having the possession arrow

I don't think that you can bank on a fake FT being called; I honestly can't remember the last time that I saw that get whistled. But what happened next was certainly a massive screw-up by the refs. They were ready to award Augustana the ball after Cook's deliberately missed FT attempt -- and had to be reminded by the Carthage bench that there's no such thing as a genuine deliberately missed FT attempt that hits the rim. And then, as you said, once the bad call was reversed, it left the Red Men in a position to set up a final shot.

Lost in all of that craziness was the running eight-foot bankshot that Austin Elledge made to break the 80-80 tie with 14 seconds left. He had 26 tonight, and he and Pierson Wofford (19 and 10) totally saved Augie's bacon in a game in which most of their teammates seemed to play pretty indifferently. They canceled out nice performances from Kienan Baltimore (22 and 9 with 4 steals) and Cook (19 pts).

Whole lotta fun using two computers to watch two games go right down to the final buzzer!

Wheaton 80  IWU 79

Incredible win for the Thunder and a heart breaker for the Green Team with some untimely missed FTs to give Nyameye Adom ( 30 pts, 3 rebs, 6 asst) the opportunity to win it on an improbable bank three at the buzzer.  Almost hard to believe since it seemed like Wheaton went the last 7 minutes of the game without getting a defensive stop giving up a basket or committing a foul.  But Wheaton made just enough plays and were able to take advantage of the Titan generosity.  Adom was dynamite down the stretch as was Charlie Bair for the Titans.  I think it hurt IWU a little when Leritz fouled out.

It's been a topsy turvy stretch for Wheaton and looking for a win.  So there's little concern if it was pretty or ugly. Wheaton still with a mathematical chance to host a first round CCIW tourney game although not likely.

Titan Q

Extremely proud of the way the Titans battled and competed tonight.

Tough loss.

Here's Adom's game-winner.

Q and I were talking earlier this evening and, because neither of us wanted to go through the headache of contemplating what-ifs involving IWU and Carthage, we agreed to call the #1 seed to NCC. Then Adom went and removed the headache entirely; with 5 losses, the Titans can't tie the Cardinals and make our heads hurt.

See you in Naperville in two weeks.

Here's Adom's game-winner.

He hits perhaps the biggest shot of his life and then just turns around and slowly walks away while the entire gym goes berserk.

Just another day at the office, I guess. ;)

Can someone post the shot Aston Francis hit at IWU last Winter?

Try this. It's a package deal with the Andrew Jahns putback from 2010 and the Adom shot from tonight

I'm not talking about throwing the ball off the backboard/rim.  He legitimately did a shot fake 2x before releasing the ball. I believe it was him, if not another Carthage play did that on an earlier possession as well.  Dan Sand made multiple references on the broadcast about how he couldn't believe they didn't see it / call it when they were trying to determine what to do after the quick whistle.

OK, who had 4:47 in the first half for the Ron Rose jacket removal/not quite toss?

Did you see how, immediately after he started pulling it off, one of the student managers came out of nowhere and stepped onto the floor, and Giovanine tossed the sportcoat to him while barely looking in the kid's direction?

"OK, Mike, it says here on your résumé that you were a student manager for your college's men's basketball team. Tell me about that, and tell me how that prepared you for the kind of management job that you're seeking with us."

"Well, sir, I had the most important job out of all of the student managers on the team. My job was to catch the coach's sportcoat when he tossed it away during a game!"

Yes, I knew what you were talking about. And I heard Dan's comments. I'm just saying that I can't remember seeing that particular infraction ever called before.

Ah - the original comment misidentified Grey as Ron Rose.  For a minute there I thought  the jacket toss might have mutated into an infectious disease and started spreading to other coaches in the conference.  :D

I was confused as well, but had the over because it happened at the 11:59 mark. With Augie coming out of the gates slow, I was surprised it lasted that long.

Y'know, I didn't even notice that Pete had identified the coach in question as Ron Rose. At this point, I see "jacket toss" in a post, I don't even stop to think that, somewhere, somebody else on a college basketball sideline might be hurling a sportcoat. It's almost as though Grey Giovanine's got a patent on the maneuver.

Of course, he didn't invent it. When it comes to coaches flinging men's outer apparel, somebody before him had to have been the trailblazer. ;)
