Ted Hedstrand's 1949-1950 football and basketball teams at North Park Academy both finished the season with undefeated records.  Working with 35 youngsters Hedstrand coached the Academy to eight straight victories in football and twenty-five straight wins in basketball. The basketball team won its first Private School League championship and became the first championship team in league history to win the post-season tournament. Private schools were not in the Illinois High School Association so the team was unable to compete in the state tournament but during the season North Park defeated nearby Roosevelt High School 72-32 and Roosevelt made it to the state semi-finals. Bob Mattick, the 6-10 center was the first Private School League player to make every all-area team. He was offered twenty-six college basketball scholarships before he selected Oklahoma A & M.
Twenty five years later the Chicago Sun Times described Hedstrand's feat:

Working at the high school and at North Park College, Ted taught classes from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., "straight through with a break for lunch. Then," he said, "I went to practice. I coached the varsity and frosh-soph basketball teams and the varsity and frosh-soph basketball teams. During a three-week break I coached the swim team. And in the spring I had high school and college track.  My salary was about $ 2,000 a year."

The football team was also undefeated during the 1950 season.

For the IWU job, what about Wheaton grad Matt Nadlehoffer, the head coach at Eastern U.?

He and Mike Schauer (Gordon) probably need a better track record of success to get a job like IWU.

Too bad IWU didn't move on this faster, they probably could have wooed Bobby Knight with all the great facilities and tradition and all  ;)

Anyone know the last time a CCIW school (or perhaps any other Div III school) formed a search committe for either a cross country or a soccer coach?

You must be referring to Matt Neil, a former Hope player.  He's been an assistant for at least 16 years and coached the JV's while I was at Hope.  He's the man behind Hope's bigman success over the years.

I think he would make a good head coach someday,  but I'm not sure thats his interest.  He's a teacher first and formost.

Within the next 5 years or so Hope will be going through this same situation.

I think that he's the guy then.  Will he be the next coach at Hope then?  He seemed really in tune with the games that weekend and honestly appeared as the head coach at times.  Perhaps IWU would be wise in getting him interested in the job.

Don' really want him in the CCIW though.

Rumor has it John Tharp (Lawrence) is very interested in IWU and IWU is very interested in John Tharp.

Some Augie-based sources say that former Elmhurst coach Rich Walker, the current Director of Basketball Operations at D1 U. of Iowa, has thrown his name in for the IWU job.

There is all kinds of info. floating around about the Titan opening! :)

Walker just got the axe at Iowa, so he's probably throwing his name in for just about any job that's available. I don't know much about him, but Elmhurst was brutal in the late seventies, which is, I believe, when he was their coach.

e-prof, I don't know if you saw my post from last week, but I assume you are aware that Wheaton has had a search committee in place for some months now looking for a replacement for retiring coach Joe Bean.

Matt Nadelhofer would be an interesting coach at Wesleyan, but record or not, he doesn't seem to be a Wesleyan kind of guy.  Bob?

Rumour I heard today was that Larry Eustachy was a leading candidate for the IWU job.  What do you think?

May as well give the man a second chance.

Jim, I always felt like Matt Nadlehoffer the player was a "Wesleyan kind of guy", so sure, I could see him on the sidelines for the Titans.

From what I am picking up from people here and there, it sounds like the number of applicants for the IWU coaching vacancy is incredible.  There are some great current coaches pursuing the job.  Based on the names I've heard, I feel real good about how this process will play out.

Walker's four-year record at Elmhurst from 1977-78 thru 1980-81 was 33-71 (.317), with a CCIW mark of 14-50 (.219). Of course, it's hard to hold a moldy CCIW coaching record that dates back to the late seventies against an applicant (NPU didn't let a bad late-seventies tenure hold them back when they hired former Carroll mentor Rees Johnson), and if I'm not mistaken the Bluejays still played all their home games off-campus at nearby York High School back then, which certainly couldn't have helped matters.

After he left Elmhurst Walker became the initial men's basketball head coach at a fledgling school in Miami, Florida International University. In seven seasons at FIU when it was a D2 school, Walker's teams went 115-145 (.442). He stuck around for two more years and guided them into the transition to D1, going 17-39 (.304) in that span.

So Walker hasn't been a head coach in over a decade and a half, although it hasn't been for lack of trying. He openly courted the then-vacant position at Drake in the spring of 2002. As a Tom Davis holdover, I'm kind of surprised that he lasted as long as he did under Steve Alford.

I notice Joe didn't come on to comment about this, when his coach's name gets dropped.  It's true, Schauer will need some more success at Gordon before he gets considered for a CCIW job.  He really has been impressive both in terms of recruiting and player development in his time in New England.  I don't know for sure, but I would guess that a CCIW job would be his ultimate goal.  I don't know how long Harris plans to be at Wheaton, but that's probably the job these Wheaton alums will be gunning for anyway and the extra time will give them a chance to build their coaching resumes.
