North Central wins their second game of the young season beating Whitman 77-60.
Ethan Helwig with 32 points, and Matt Helwig with 23 points.

*Whitman had previously beaten Carthage and Carroll.
So young hero, ask yourself............................Do you want to go to college, get a good education, and play (basketball)(football), or do you want to go to college, get a good education, and watch (basketball)(football)? 🤔 😏

North Central 77, Whitman 60 in Waukesha today.

North Central led by 16 at the break thanks to strong shooting, then had things more or less under control in the second half.

You could also write this up as Whitman 60, Helwig Brothers 55.

Ethan with 32 on 11-of-14 shooting, including 7-of-8 from three
Matt with 23 including 12-of-13 from the line
Nobody else with more than 7

Murphy Caffo led Whitman with 14

Not a complaint, but it is going to take me a hot minute to get used to the Sons of Warden pushing the pace after so many years of a more deliberate style.

While employing at least a full 10 man rotation in the majority of cases, I think you can count on the Cardinals playing at a frenetic pace most every game. Their new "style" so to speak.

North Park 126
Grinnell 95

Jalen Boyd: 21 pts, 3 stls
Lance Nelson: 16 pts (4-5 trey)
Marquise Jackson: 14 pts, 7 rebs
Adam Bulwa: 14 pts
Kolden VanLandingham: 12 pts, 5:1 a:to
Jordan Boyd: 14 rebs
Shamar Pumphrey: 6:1 a:to, 5 stls
Quillin Dixon: 4 stls

Today the Vikings ventured into deepest, darkest Iowa and broke a 40-year-old school record for most points scored. Yeah, I know it's pedestrian for a program to break its single-game scoring record against Grinnell, but the satisfying part of that is that it was a rout (the Vikings led by 42 with three minutes to go until Sean Smith emptied the end of the bench), the Vikings had more offensive rebounds and steals than did the Pioneers (the Arseneault System is predicated upon getting offensive rebounds and steals), and NPU was decidedly on the positive side of the ledger in the assists-versus-turnovers department.

Sean Smith used 19 players, and fourteen of them scored. At one point late in the contest North Park actually had three Swedish players in the game ... and nobody tried to kick the ball into the net. ;)

Jalen Boyd is off to a nice little start to his senior season. He's scored 47 points in 53 minutes of action and is shooting 20-25 (.800) from the field and 4-6 (.667) from downtown.

Other Saturday CCIW finals:

* Augustana 81, St. Mary's MN 73 -- Dan Carr had a somewhat more modest double-double today (18 and 11), while Tyler Knuth took top honors in scoring for Augie with 20. Matts Hanushewsky and Hawkins had 13 and 12 points, respectively, and Chase Larson grabbed eight boards.

* Elmhurst 110, Alma 74 -- Elmhurst took that endless bus ride into the middle of the mitten and took it out on the Scots for inconveniencing them by being so out of the way. Five different Bluejays hit double figures: John Ittounas (18) Ocean Johnson (15 and 10), Wesley Hooker (14), Matt Woloch (14), and Jonathan Zapinski (13 and 7, plus 3 blocks).

* Millikin 64, Illinois College 56 -- Millikin came away with the win in Jacksonville behind solid efforts from Drake Stevenson (14 and 9) and Demarcus Bond (14 and 5:2 a:to), while J.T. Welch chipped in 13.

* Dubuque 68, Carroll 53 -- The Pioneers got swept in their own tournament this weekend, as the Spartans had this one well under control for most of the way. Aaron Wafford and Justin Steinike were Carroll's bright spots with 15 and 14, respectively.

* Wheaton 82, Transylvania 63 -- WC was paced by Tyson Cruickshank's 23, and he had plenty of help from T.J Askew (18), Micah Schnyders (13), and Nick Schiavello (10 and 7:0 a:to).

* Illinois Wesleyan 76, Yeshiva 71 -- Titans survive a date with the Jewish Aston Francis, as Zevi Samet (38 pts, including some absurd circus treys) singlehandedly kept the Maccabees in the game right into the final ten seconds. Harrison Wilmsen led the way for Wesleyan with 19 and 7, Ryan Sroka had 16 and 7, and Nick Roper had 14.

You may have to re-evaluate what you consider to be "pushing the pace" this year. NCC was outscored by five of the other seven CCIW schools that played today.

Solamente Augie, Elmhurst, North Park, and Wheaton outscored NCC. Cuatro, no cinco.  ::)  ;)

Yeah, that's what I get for typing out that post late in the IWU vs. Yeshiva game, certain that the Titans would keep scoring, when in the end they just stopped scoring and fell one point short of NCC, making me look foolish for not checking my work.

Blaming everything on Wesleyan just comes easy, doesn't it? ;)

The hardwood Scots were no doubt distracted as they were looking forward to heading to the Pine Knot after the game to celebrate Alma's football team's undefeated season, the MIAA championship, and their first NCAA playoff appearance!  ;D

Stevens Point came back from 11 or so down to nip the Titans in the Jack Sikma Hall of Fame Invitational Final, 71-66.

Harrison Wilmsen is going to be a beast, very good in the paint.  But, the Titans didn't finish the game off well, with rather poor perimeter defense and a few crucial TOs at inopportune moments in the final three minutes.

This Titan team a work in progress, with still a rotation of 10-12.  Key improvement needed is defensive, especially perimeter and trey defense when the opponent has quick guards.  UW Stevens Points guards the difference in this one.

Zevi Samet of Yeshiva one of the best players I've seen in all of D3 in many years.   He had another strong game today as Yeshiva beat Webster in the consolation game at The Shirk.  I wonder if he's on the Israeli national team?   Light on his feet and such a pure stroke from anywhere.

He isn't from Israel. He's from Monsey, NY, a village in the Hudson Valley heavily populated by Hasidic Jews; over 40% of Monsey's population of 27,000 speak Yiddish as their first language.

Samet is only a sophomore. This is his first season playing for the Maccabees, and already after three games against pretty good competition he's averaging 26 ppg while hitting 20-43 (.465) from long range, with many of those shots apparently being from ridiculous distances or the sort of stepback fadeaway corner treys we got used to seeing from #1 in orange, navy blue, and white for three years at the end of the last decade.

Perhaps in a few years, when it's all said and done, we'll be referring to Aston Francis as the Christian Zevi Samet. ;)

Greg, thanks for the background on Zevi.  Great player.  I met his folks who were at the Shirk.  Just wonderful friendly people, so happy to be in the Midwest enjoying The Shirk and their son's tremendous performances this weekend.  Just a poised, relaxed player, with those light feet and a beautiful stroke on his shot.   He sees the floor so so well.   When he put up 38 on the Titans, it was pretty clear that no one could guard him, though Luke Heflen surely tried his best.  Zevi named to the All-Tournament team . . .

Yeshiva is overall a pretty good team, with some good coaching too.

The Titans really let one get away vs. the Point . . . up 11 with 8 or minutes or so to go, then UW-SP coming back with great guard play, trey shooting, though the Titans surely helped them out with miscues and TOs in the last 3 or so minutes.   The Titans have work to do on defending trey territory.

Sacre bleu! Comment c'est possible?  :o
The mighty Titans were picked first in the CCIW Poll while the lowly Pointers were picked to finish last in the WIAC!  ::)
