It seems to be a rather slow period of discussion, so I thought I'd throw this tidbit of info up that I ran across.  A little while back there was a discussion as to the religious affiliations of CCIW and other institutions.  I was looking into some grad. school programs and checking out info on US News and World Report.  For the heck of it I was looking up IWU and noticed that according to US News, it shows IWU as having no religious affiliation.  Now, I don't know the criteria required to be considered an "affiliation," but I thought that was an interesting fact for cocktail parties.  The school does not get any money from the Methodist church anymore, but I thought there was still some loose ties with scholarships, etc.  Thought I'd throw that out for discussion.

We've been over this before, Devildog. The United Methodist Church (not just "the Methodist church"; it's a specific denomination, as there's several other denominations that call themselves "Methodist") retains a very loose relationship with Illinois Wesleyan University thru the UMC's General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. The GBHEM website (http:www.gbhem.org/gbhem/colleg.html) outlines the formal structure of the relationship that the UMC has with the colleges and universities affiliated with it, and lists those schools. Illinois Wesleyan is on that list.

Numerous people have attested to the fact that the UMC's footprint on the Illinois Wesleyan campus is close to being vestigial, and is for all practical purposes invisible. It certainly has a much lower profile than the ELCA's presence on the Carthage and Augustana campuses, to say nothing of the even closer relationship between NPU and its parent denomination (The Evangelical Covenant Church) that is very apparent within North Park's campus life. Nevertheless, if US News & World Report stated that Illinois Wesleyan has no religious affiliation, it's in error. Which is no surprise, if you ask me. I've never been terribly impressed by that magazine.

There was at least one funny moment that took place during the Saturday radio broadcast on WGN-AM in the otherwise dismal weekend of crosstown-rivalry baseball here in Chicago. Check out this bit of banter between Cubs play-by-play man Pat Hughes and his ever-colorful partner Ron Santo:

RON: I gotta e-mail here from Jim Oboikowich ... Big Jim wants us to say 'hi' to one of his friends in Naperville ... I gotta take off my sunglasses so I can read it.

PAT: The count is one-and-one.

RON: He wants us to say 'hi' to ... Wheeler? It looks like Wheeler.

PAT: Let me have a look at that, Ron. Wiertel. Jason Wiertel of Naperville.

RON: Oh ... Wiertel.

I almost busted a gut laughing at that one. JW, you've been Santoized!

The relationship between IWU and the United Methodist church is certainly not what it once was. For that matter the relationship between all UMC colleges and the UMC is not what it once was. However, Illinois Wesleyan's relationship with it's church founders certainly isn't invisible....particularly not at the governance level. The church holds 6 seats on the schools board of trustees and one seat on the Executive Committee of the BOT.

Greg and sidelines, that was my whole point.  We had a conversation about this earlier where it was pretty much established the connection between the UMC and IWU is not the same as it once was, but it is still tere.  That's why I found it odd that US News would list IWU as having no religious affiliation.
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

I recently heard that Millikin is close to getting a commitment from 6-3 guard Austin Peebles from Maroa-Forsyth.  Peebles and UIC-bound junior Robert Kreps led M-F to the Class A Final Four.  Peebles had 35 points and 8 rebounds in his final high school game, the consolation contest in Peoria vs Pinckneyville...

I know Peebles has a full scholarship offer from NAIA St. Xavier and has several other small colleges pursuing him hard, including Elmhurst.  I think Millikin already has a lot of nice pieces in place right now.  With the addition of Peebles, I think the Big Blue would have as much talent in their 2006-07 fresh/soph classes as any team in the CCIW...maybe that statement is even true without him.

Here is a feature from IWU's website on Keelan Amelianovich...

It's pretty nicely done.

Looks like Keelan now has an agent for his pursuit of a job in Europe...

I see on the front page that Dauksus is going to grad school.  I thought earlier this month I read that he dominated Dee Brown and that led me to believe he was going to the NBA.

Congrats to Adam on the scholarship.

I have also heard that MU is close to getting Peebles, but am not sure if it will really happen.  I have also heard he is highly considering UMSL.  I also heard recently that Freshman shooting guard Ray Kissing is leaving school to attend SIU-C.  This is going to be a huge loss for the Big Blue, however, if Peebles makes a choice soon to come to Millikin, I think they will have a nice replacement.  Peebles would look great alongside, Drew Gensler, Mitch Ade, Robert Rexroade, and Zach Ott.  Throw in the other "role" players and I would agree that Millikin has a great freshman/sophomore class next season.  Hopefully they could keep it together and put together a nice run.

Plus you get to see the back of Pat Cummings head again.  :D

I took a quick look at some of the other students that were highlighted the same way... Keelan's is the only one that entirely about his life as an athlete-student. Funny stuff... do you think he maybe likes basketball a little?  :)

That's an interesting bit of info that has never been mentioned before by Wesleyan people on CCIW Chat, OTS. Thanks for adding it to this discussion.

I wasn't terribly impressed by what I saw of Kissing last season, but I did like what I saw of Peebles in the Class A Final Four on television. He looks like he'd be a nice pickup for Millikin.

Just heard that Ryan Phillips from Richwoods has already taken back his commitment to Augie and will walk-on at Bradley.  Not sure if he can play there...would have been a good player in the CCIW
