Emeritus prof, when I saw your question I went to my 1990 edition of the Baseball Encyclopedia and found the 5 that I listed.  I quit at 5.  You have omitted these four pairs.  Thus 29 seems to be only a partial number.

Was the "29" figure from SABR or some other official baseball news service?

Here are four more pairs:

Angel (Bing) Aragon and Jack Aragon
Dolf Camilli and Doug Camilli
Herm Doscher and Jack Doscher
Jim Eschen and Larry Eschen

Ralph, I believe Clayton was looking for active players whose fathers were major leaguers.  Those names don't sound like active players to me.  (Although you have to stretch the definition of "active" if you want to include Barry Bonds!  ;D)

Greg mentioned Jerry Hairston Jr. a couple of pages back.

Yes, I did. I would caution people who administer tests to read the answers carefully. To wit: This makes three correct answers that Clayton has failed to acknowledge. As David said, it's important to prove that your response is correct when you have no confidence that the professor actually knows the right answers.

The George Bushes ... with different middle names ... are a great comparison.

As are the Daleys. The current mayor of Chicago has a different middle name than his late father. The current mayor is Richard M. Daley. The old mayor was Richard J. Daley.

Quote from: Hoops Fan on June 19, 2006, 08:58:05 AMI'll give you all of South Asia, but the Aussies are loving their WC performance right now and China is possibly even more desperate than the US Soccer Federation to field a competitive team.  Their borderline.  I'm not sure where Russia came from.  They have a great team and a bunch of billionaire club owners... besides, they Russians don't get excited about anything.

That hardly constitutes China's being big on soccer. Their most popular sports are table tennis and basketball. Russia, upon further consideration, I concede to you. It turns out that soccer is indeed their biggest sport. Australia? You must be kidding me. They may be happy down in Oz about how their team is doing in the World Cup, but soccer lags well behind several other sports in terms of the typical Aussie's interest level. According to this website (http://www.sweeneyresearch.com.au/PDF/Media-Release_Winter-2005-Interest.pdf) the interest level among Australians in various sports goes: Aussie rules football (59%), tennis (56%), swimming (56%), cricket (53%), rugby league (42%), soccer (41%), and rugby union (40%). The levels of interest in the survey were based upon participation, attendance, and media coverage.

Anyway, my point stands. The US is hardly the only country on the planet where soccer does not reign supreme. We have an awful lot of company in that regard.

Greg,

I'll conceed to your numbers.  I think we were opperating on different conceptions of the issue.  I had, in my mind, international following, where soccer generally dominates.  I understand that Aussie Rules football is huge there, but outside of swimming, they don't have a big international sport following.  (Rugby, yes, but there's only like ten countries left who even field competitive teams, so they are even on the borderline with me).

I do get it, that soccer isn't the most popular in every country, but most places generally support their international footballers well when they play.  We're really the only country with a decent squad where the majority of people won't even pay attention to the score.

I'm probably digging the hole deeper, but I was hoping to clarify my mindset.

Soccer is still a sport for commie pinko liberals.

This is why I like Dennis, we feel the same way about soccer. +K

Are you sure Preston Wilson is Mookie's kid?

I did some checking, Preston is Mookie's stepson.
I was under the impression that Preston is Mookie's nephew.

Knightstalker,

It really is a reach to find something likeable about Dennis, isn't it?

Ok, I did the research.  Oddly enough Mookie Wilson is BOTH Preston Wilson's Stepfather and Uncle.  Preston was born in 1974, fathered by Mookie's brother.  Mookie married Preston's mother, Rosa, in 1978, in a ceremony at home plate in Jackson Mississippi, while Mookie was with the Generals.

And I gave you a +K last night.  You definitely still have Wheaton blood in you, Joe, always Crusading against North Park fans.  Must be 'soccer' envy.   ;D

I have a lot of different types of blood in me I guess.  But NP was one of the most enjoyable places that I have worked.  Great people at the time.  I wish the new President well.

Oh Thank You, Thank You - I'm up to negative seven.  Now if I could just get a little love from April - my life would be complete.   :D

Any positive feelings about North Park are always a negative karma point with April
Ah, you are one of the many North Park people that are deluded into thinking that

1) Wheaties actually notice that North Park exists or
2) care North Park exists even if they do know it exists
3) Wheaties are vindictive and spiteful like you are

April - I see you quote John Muir.  Certainly one of the great conservationists in our nation's history, who almost single-handedly saved the treasures of Yosemite National Park from the axe.

Now that you are out in California - have you had the opportunity to visit Muir Woods, on the northside of the Golden Gate Bridge?  Absolutely fabulous grove of 300-foot tall Coastal Redwoods - just minutes off the bridge.

(shhhh - see guys I'm trying to get on April's good side - so my karma won't match Titan2000's.)   ;D
I'm not sure I've ever smited Titan 2000... I give him karma when I think he's funny though.

I've been to Yosemite twice, and Sequoia and Kings Canyon, as well as other places John Muir loved like the Grand Canyon in the last few months, but when I went to San Fransisco in April I couldn't convince the person I was with that Muir Woods was a good idea. Sigh... maybe when I'm back up in San Fransisco in October. I'm planning on getting a rental and driving down to Redwoods National Park and backpacking around when I'm in Portland. Costal redwoods are my favorite. Fell in love with them when I was in Washington a few summers ago.

Oh - Wheaties know that North Park exists - just ask your soccer coach Joe Bean.
I doubt it. I'm guessing the only way you could have beaten us is that they were so bored with the idea of North Park that they just weren't paying attention.  :P :D 8)
