Are you not doing SID work anymore, Robb?

The famous Notre Dame win in NP soccer history came when the team was a club.  I don't know any of the details on that, other than it helped to make the case to have a varsity program.  We did have wins over Loyola, DePaul and Northwestern when I was there.

Being over 50% accurate on memory at my age is pretty good, so thanks for the compliment, Greg.  I too, remember Dave Claerbaut arguing with the Northwestern and DePaul people about his right to broadcast the game that night.  DC would have equipment that was about 30 years out of date, and have wires connected with paperclips.  If he sneezed, he would have been off the air.  At the end of games, when he needed to work all of his $15 commercial spots in, he would string them together while the game was going on, and then try to re-create the game later on.

At Carthage one time, the final horn went off during an ad, and he threw in a couple of other spots and then described the final three possessions while you could hear people in the background leaving, with total silence at the end when the game ended on a dunk at the buzzer.

Sitting with DC and listening to the broadcast was like watching one game and listening to another.  On every inbounds play, the inbounder "Slaps leather" to get the play started.

Thanks for the info.  You really are the authority on IWU (and CCIW) basketball and I very much appreciate that.  I hope the Titans can pull things together but, as you've stated, it does depend on how well they can "gel" and create team chemistry.  I wish the best for those guys in the long run and hope that the Wash U loss was just a hiccup on the road to a CCIW championship.

MAC: i said already what you said in your previous post - intensity, drive and the desire to WIN....i said before the one guard that is injured needs to be in the game to give them added boost and desire but he is no good in a boot.

As for the other guys, the Freemans need desire regardless of their talent - the shooting #1/#2 guards need to move their feet and the coach needs to use his bench regardless of their talent - ever since the freshman guard got injured (post Thanksgiving Championship) this team has suffered! Just the way I see it....

OurHouse-

What do you define desire as?  I know the Freemans are personally motivated and have been ever since I've seen them play at Normal Community.  They may not be the fist pumping and yelling types (which i don't believe they are), but they have a desire to win.  Andrew needs to get used to playing big minutes and Zach needs to adjust a little more and learn that this is HIS team now, not the team of Dauksas or Keelan.

When Sean Dwyer comes back, I agree this team will get the help it needs.

TitanBacker:

Thanks for your response - I define "desire" as "the measurement of whatever it takes to do something": so, in this instance, the desire to win and win at all cost, is not there every game - one game the desire is there, the next game seems that they forgot what the definition of desire is....

Desire is tasting, breathing and salivating the need to WIN - when you step out on the court, you have to feel you OWN the court, think that NO ONE is better than you, think and focus on one thing, WINNING! This means diving for a lose basketball, hustling to win the ball when it is going out of bounds, going that extra inch to make something happen when all else is down....taste it, smell it, sleep it, breathe it!!

Why does one play a sport in the first place? I play to WIN and winning comes from the "desire to win", nothing less!

Any thoughts out there on this game?  Carthage hasn't played since last Saturday against Beloit.  Lawrence on the other hand hasn't played since December 3rd.  That seems like an awful long time to be off.  Personally, I don't think that this kind of "rest" is good this early in the season.  I can see the Vikings coming out flat in this one.  As Carthage has only played one good first half all season, this one could be a 'turnover fest' for the first 20 minutes.

If Carthage takes care of business on the road in this one, do they get a little more respect in the CCIW pick'em??

AndOne

Carthage opponents so far this season have a combined 21-21 record or 50%.
Lawrence's are 25-15, playing at a 62.5 winning %. Not sure if that means anything or not. Lawrence has played the single toughest opponent (Point) while Carthage has played the worst (Beloit). Overall FG shooting % is about the same at 53%, but Lawrence shoots a little better (43% to 38%) from long distance, and a lot better (74% to 58% from the line. Lawrence will of course also have the home court/crowd advantage.

In speaking with Coach Tharp of Lawrence last Fri night, he is somewhat worried about the fairly long layoff before this game, and also about the problems presented by Carthage's Schlemm.

I look for a pretty close game with the primary deciding factors to be turnovers and free throw shooting in a fairly low scoring game.

And yes, if Carthage can knock of the #9 team on their home court, they will definately be in for some added respect.

I know a lot of folks on this board read the football board as well, but for those who don't, check out the IBFC football board.  Top notch entertainment.  Unbelievable the trash they throw around not only at their opponets, but they are even calling out their own teammates.  It's hilarious, yet sad at the same time.  Will make you appreciate the professionalism and respect on this board.
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

I'm here at NW and the Wheaton fans are rocking this place.  With 10:00 to go, Wheaton is up 30-29.  Yes, NW is flat but Wheaton is playing awesome defense!  Raymond is the best performer on the floor tonight.

The NW coach is VERY unhappy right now as his team is being schooled by Wheaton and the CCIW.

Great effort by Wheaton in a losing cause tonight. NU lucks out 41-39 with Wheaton missing a forced 3 at the buzzer. NU kept Raymond from getting the ball in the final possession

wheaton shoots 3-18 in the second half from the arc according to Harris on the postgame. huge rebounding edge for the Thunder.

Awesome effort for Wheaton and great showing for D3!!

Wow, what a performance by Wheaton!

I was really hoping Kent Raymond was going to take that final shot.  Credit Northwestern for keeping it out of his hands.

This is a pretty good league, ya know that!?

6-5 freshman guard Paul Bayer (Lehigh) is transfering to Olivet Nazarene.  Bayer was a big-time player at Moline H.S. -- I wonder if he considered Augustana in the transfer process??

With 15.7 to go in the game, the Northwestern clock operator failed to start the clock twice, forcing Wheaton into some "freeze the kicker" type of play.  Raymond did bring the ball over the time line but then passed off to Panner, who really didn't direct the play well.  I really wanted to see Standard or Raymond taking the shot at the end, but Andy had a tough but open shot to win.  It was a good shot, but went off the front of the rim.

Raymond had 17 points tonight, but had some turn-over challenges, I'm sure due to the athleticism of his D1 opponent.  He looked good overall, and at least tonight, would have started for the Wildcats.

Wheaton really frustrated the Cats with a very strong defensive effort, playing man the entire evening.  It was also weird to see Wheaton outrebounding Northwestern.  So I have to guess that the Wildcats were just on their heels the entire night, clearly put off by the Thunder defense and the Wheaton crowd.

Everyone enjoyed themselves tonight and although it was a loss, it was a closely fought game and a real treat for the players, coaches and fans.
