Although he may not start, you gotta watch out for Mike Morrison off the bench for the Redman, he is a microwave.

Quote from: Gregory Sager on November 22, 2005, 12:19:07 AMThe situation with Alaskan and Hawaiian teams is different. Games played against them count towards win-loss records, of course, because Alaska and Hawaii are part of the United States[...]

So is Puerto Rico.  It may not be a state, but then again neither is the District of Columbia, and we count games against CUA.

This has long been a pet peeve of mine.   >:(

Wow, DC is calling out Greg Sager on his knowlege of the makeup of the United States of Ameica!!!!

Watch out, Greg.  You have unleashed a pet peeve.

Knightstalker

Do pet peeves need to be registered with the local town?  Do they rabies and distemper shots?  I have never had a pet peeve before, a pet rabbit (eaten by wild dogs) a couple of cats before developing allergies and several dogs.  Pet gerbils and birds, some fish, but never a peeve.  Are they easy to housebreak?   8)

My beef isn't with Greg; he just provided a nice quote to spring off of.  My beef is with those who treat Puerto Rico as if it were not a part of the United States.  The list is long indeed: the NCAA and the International Olympic Committee come to mind.  My former employer had its Puerto Rican operations in the International Division.  Then again, that's where they had Alaska, too, for a while!  :)

The IWU/Olivet Nazarene game this evening (7:30pm CST) can be heard on WJBC2.com.  This is an internet-only game with Illinois State @ Cincinatti live on WJBC.

David, I think that a lot of this is by the choice of the Puerto Ricans. Although there is a substantial number of them who would prefer statehood, and a smaller number that would prefer independence, the majority of them continue to vote to retain commonwealth status. Whether that means that they're "part of the United States" is a matter of semantics. Unlike District of Columbia residents, Puerto Ricans who are residents of the island can't vote for president and don't pay federal taxes. They can also hold the aforementioned plebiscites of self-determination; the District does not have the power to vote itself into independence.

Puerto Rico as a whole seems to prefer this arrangement, with the island being recognized as a separate entity for Olympic purposes. The IOC observes that Puerto Rico has its own culture and a large measure of self-government, and I very much get the impression that Puerto Ricans enjoy their separateness from the U.S. the most at Olympics time, judging from the way they reacted to their team beating the U.S. at basketball in last year's Olympiad, 92-73.

It's not as if Puerto Rico is an anomaly in that regard. FIBA recognizes England, Scotland, and Wales as separate entities for the World Cup of soccer, and those lands are much more integrated into the United Kingdom than Puerto Rico is integrated into the United States.

The UK has been trying field a unified team for a while now, but their petitions keep getting knocked down by FIFA.  Certainly the best of Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales would be instant favorites if they were combined... its hard to say there would be much impact in the sports world if Puerto Rico were joined with the US, other than perhaps they might actually vote for independence.  There's not much incentive when you pay no taxes, get all the benefits and still get to compete as an independent nation internationally anyway.  They got it good.

Virginia is a commonwealth!  :D

Does that mean that IWU's playoff loss a few years back no longer counts?  ???

I believe Kentucky is as well.

That would nullify a lot of losses in D1 hoops in the last century.

I have to agree with Hoops Fan. No federal taxes sounds pretty sweet. I wouldn't want to give up my right to vote for President, but the candidates I vote for never get more than about 1/2% of the vote anyway. ;)

Good grief, April - I think that means that ALL fb and bb d3 tourneys for the last several years DO NOT COUNT!! ;) ;D

Um, wait a second, the Titan bball team won it all in Salem - maybe I'll have to rethink this 'commonwealth' thing!

Mr. Ypsi

For that matter, Massachusetts is also a 'commonwealth'.

Will the NFL have to declare a new Super Bowl champion 3 of the last 4 years? ;D

I thought the line of banter here was that it was the location of the game that was "important" and not the location of the team.

If anyone is able to listen to the IWU game via the internet stream, those of us who do not use quicktime would appreciate whatever updates you might be able to post throughout the game.  Thanks in advance.
