Incidentally, calling yourself (as a state) a 'commonwealth' doesn't make it a commonwealth.

The only other sovereign states within U.S. boundaries are reservations.

The UK has been trying field a unified team for a while now, but their petitions keep getting knocked down by FIFA.  Certainly the best of Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales would be instant favorites if they were combined...

Not if they still let Beckham try penalties! 

David, I think that a lot of this is by the choice of the Puerto Ricans. Although there is a substantial number of them who would prefer statehood, and a smaller number that would prefer independence, the majority of them continue to vote to retain commonwealth status. Whether that means that they're "part of the United States" is a matter of semantics.

Puerto Rico is part of the United States of America.  It is not any more a matter of semantics than whether a non-conference game is "preseason" or not.     The rights and obligations of Puerto Ricans are different from those of Ohioans (although our votes for president don't count either  ), but Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth of the United States and is thus a part of this country, and will be so long as they continue to vote for commonwealth status (or for statehood.)  If Puerto Rico were invaded by Cuba, you can bet your bottom dollar (the currency of Puerto Rico) that it would be declared unpatriotic to suggest that Puerto Rico is not "part of the United States."
