A big second half for Augie results in a 76-54 win over Cornell College. Everyone played in this one including young Max Artis who got his first varsity action. Augie was only up two at half time.

Actually, Max made his debut and grabbed a couple rebounds in three minutes at LaCrosse Saturday.

Max played because it was a blow out. He only was in for the final minute. Everyone who made the trip played in this one. No injuries that I know of.

Any idea if freshman Brian DeSimone is hurt?

The Vikes played without DeSimone and Kyle Nelson tonight. Both are sick. Kyle has mono and also missed the LaCrosse game. Hopefully just a flu bug for Brian. Augie has also been without 6-10 Terrence Green all year (bone spurs in his ankle), so their anticipated front line rotation has been considerably disrupted.

Nice win tonight over a decent Cornell team. They go 6-11, 6-8 and 6-5 across the front and have two very solid guards, so it was a good test. Augie shot 49% and, as Q said, had a 39-20 edge on the boards. Particularly impressive was the fact that the Vikes had 20 offensive rebounds to just 13 defensive boards for the Rams, meaning Augie grabbed over 60% of their own misses! That's pretty rare. Collins and Bertrand really wore down the Rams' big guys as the game went along and Delp (2-3 3's) and Avallone (4-5 3's) shot it well.

Looking at the box score, it'll need some correction. As I said, Kyle Nelson didn't play. #40 Kyle Nelson is really #42 Chris Anderson and they don't have #22 Troy Rorer listed at all. Both Anderson and Rorer made their first varsity appearances tonight.

Quotes from the Webster coach from the Webster website:

on the Wheaton size
"(Andy Wiele) was just a hard match-up for us. Even with players like Darrin (Hoggatt) and Brad (Robinson) or any big guy we had in the past, he would have been tough. With Kevin (Miller) hurt, we just had nobody that could body him up."

on the fadeaway three-pointer
"It probably was a back breaker. We just couldn't get (the deficit) down low enough to get them tight. There is a reason they are No. 2 in the country."

on playing Wheaton and their next home opponent, No. 1 Washington University
"With teams like Wheaton and Wash U., they make you play well to beat them. If you make a mistake, they capitalize. We have to take good shots and make the few good shots you get."

Since Wash U is playing half the CCIW this year, I figure I can post here.  A story on the Bears from a St. Louis station...

I saw some photos from IWU's recent game vs Wash U.  I was struck by how much stronger sophomore Doug Sexauer looks this season...

Last season @ North Park

This season @ Wash U

Last year Doug was listed as 6-7/205...this year 6-7/225.  I think you can see those 20 lbs in the pics.

Speaking of pics, maybe it is just me, but I thought Brett Chamernick had a twin playing for Brandeis when I saw the cover story today...

Big game tomorrow at Elmhurst....Bluejays vs. Pointers....Can the Bluejay guards minimize turnovers against a tough pressuring Pointer defense....If the guards play well my bet is that Ruchs,Burks, and Strzemp can lead them past the Pointers......

guards, what guards? we dont need no stinking guards.

I hope every CCIW poster can take some time away from Christmas shopping tommorow and make it to the game.  Its a toss up baby- The Blue Jays and the Pointers both defeated a common opponent U.W. Lacrosse by 13.  So you know its going to be a barnburner. Hang on.  Are the students still on campus? This is the game of the week baby!

Thanks AndOne. No PM necessary. You can get it at www.HearitfromHome.com. Click on the "Augustana Basketball" link and the "Listen Now" button. We'll be on at about 7:20.

BTW, anyone who uses Safari or another browser that has trouble launching the media player should be able to open the player separately by copying and pasting this link:

By the way, the Wash U player guarding Chamernik in that pic is 6-6/215 Alex Toth, a freshman from Prospect H.S.  I watched John Camardella's team play last year and would have never guessed Toth would play this much as a freshman for the defending national champs (16-17 min/game lately).  In the IWU game, he played well.  I remember leaving that Prospect game thinking the junior big guy (6-7 Kevin Reed...a senior this year) was the big D3 recruit and that Toth might find a spot somewhere as a role player as a JR and SR.  Shows what I know!

My first time coming to Elmhurst... anything I should know about parking, etc, for the game?

I think this should be a good game, but honestly, I think Point may struggle.  They haven't done well against teams with good big guys lately.

That said, if Point's guards are on, then Elmhurst may need more than just points inside to keep up!
