I don't think this was mentioned here yet, but Carthage lost at Olivet Nazarene 87-73 last night...

37 more for Steve D, but the undersized Red Men were out-rebounded by a whopping 43-24 margin.  ONU's starting big guys did most of the damage - 6-6 Kris Irish (11 & 6), 6-7 Tyler Wallenfang (17 & 7), and 6-8 Tyler Baldwin (14 & 7).

#7 UW-Stevens Point led #6 Elmhurst the entire game, and by a fairly comfortable margin for most of it.  I listened to a lot of it and it sounded like the Bluejays had trouble getting the ball to Ruch consistently.  The Pointers are always great at defending the perimeter and it looks like they made it very hard on Elmhurst tonight: 7 assists, 15 turnovers for EC.  The 6 Elmhurst "guards" (Bainter, Boyd, Burks, Childs, Acosta, McCurdy) combined to have 4 assists and 10 turnovers.  Elmhurst was 2-16 from 3.

This seems like a significant in-region loss...one that will factor in come selection/seeding time.

Elmhurst travels to Fontbonne next.  I saw the Wash U/Fontbonne game this afternoon in St. Louis and it was a 1-point game with about 3:40 to play.  Fontbonne is a solid, veteran basketball team with very good guards.  After seeing the Griffins play, I'm convinced that will be a tough game for Elmhurst.

Returning All-CCIW 1st Teamer Brett Wessels started his first game and led the Vikings with 22 points, 3 assists, and 4 steals.  Augie is a much different team with a healthy Wessels.

Roshawn Russell put on quite a show, scoring 37 points (5 threes and 12 of 14 from the line) to lead the Vikings to a 78-66 win over a seasoned Loras squad.  North Park trailed 34-33 at the half despite playing most of the first stanza with Nick Williams and Clayton Cahill on the bench for a good 15 minutes each.  Williams returned to play much of the second half and scored 15 points.  The Duhawks were paced by Jake Oeth (20) and Ricky Kolze (18).  Loras also had an impressive contingent of Duhawk fans, perhaps 60 or 70 on an otherwise dreary and rainy Saturday night.

Millikin won easily, according to the D3hoops Scoreboard.

On the women's side, looks like IWU might be ranked #1 next week, as they beat #17 Chicago, while #1 Keane lost.  Stay tuned.  I believe that Lady Titans at #3 are at their highest ranking every this week.  The Wash U women beat the Titans next opponent, Fontbonne, 91-28?  Is that right?  :)

Wheaton football lost in the National playoffs semis to DIII powerhouse Mt. Union 45-24.  Congrats to Wheaton and their football program for one fabulous season and for going deep into the national tournament.  Great to see a CCIW football team do so well, represent the CCIW so well.

IWU70,
Yes, this week's #3 is the highest ranking ever for the Titan women.  I've written a brief game report of their victory over #17 Chicago over on the CCIW womens' board.  The score of the WashU-Fontbonne game was actually 81-28--not much of an improvement.  I doubt either team learned much from that game.

darn it...I missed another game....what was the reason for Nick and Clayton missing so much time in the first half?

Nick got whistled for two fouls in the first three minutes.  I'm not sure about Clayton.

Elmhurst must be very disappointed with their performance this evening.  The game was effectively won in the first 9:53 when UW-SP went up 19-4.  Elmhurst was able to halve the Point's lead by half, 25-18.  Unfortunately, Ryan Burks was a significant 'no-show' tonight scoring below his season average by 12 points
The guards were able to penetrate early but missed at least six drives to the basket where they were unable to finish the lay-in or short runners.  Ruch was dominant on the inside but Elmhurst failed to take advantage of this early.  Another key statistic will be the number of offensive rebounds that UW-SP secured at critical points in the game.  At this point, the Bluejays better learn from this marginal effort or it will be a .500 year in the CCIW.  The 'Jays were out-played at every phase of the game tonight.  And the search for production and  leadership in the backcourt continues on, and on, and on.

Man, Roshawn Russell is really something special. Never mind the fact that he scored 37 points tonight, breaking the 30 mark for the second straight game -- or that, for the second straight game, he did all of his scoring with great economy (only 16 shots taken; he scored 34 on 13 shots last Saturday night against IUN). Heck, one can even overlook the fact that he excelled in the phases of the game in which a point guard is supposed to excel: 12-14 from the line, and seven assists with only one turnover.

What really makes Russell special is that he put the whole team on his skinny 150-pound back tonight in the first half. Nick Williams picked up his second foul three minutes into the game, and Clayton Cahill picked up his second foul at the 14:28 mark, with NPU trailing 9-8. That meant that the Vikings would have to play almost three-quarters of the first half with their two big guns sitting on the bench. I had visions of Loras running away and putting the Vikings in a deep hole at the half. But, with four freshmen on the floor for practically the entire half, NPU managed to hang in there with the Duhawks, in large part because Russell scored 15 points from the time that Cahill sat down with his second foul until the end of the half. At intermission the score was Loras 34, NPU 33, and I knew that the Park was going to win. That sort of perseverance would be rewarded with Cahill and Williams back on the floor in the second half.

And that's how it happened. It wasn't without a few hiccups; North Park shot poorly from the FT line again, and Loras's excellent perimeter ball movement coupled with NPU's inability to close on shooters gave the Duhawks lots of good looks from behind the arc. But eventually the Vikings wrested control of the game, as Williams imposed his will with his usual inside-outside excellence and Russell kept knocking down one amazing shot in traffic after another. The final spread was 12 points, which is a tribute to how hard Loras fought to stay in it at the end, but if NPU had been less scattershot at the line it wouldn't have ended that close.

In addition to Russell's outstanding game, Williams added 15 points, all scored in the second half. Senior center Mike Ventura and freshman guard Ryan Beigie brought their lunchbuckets to the gym tonight, garnering nine and seven caroms, respectively, and playing solid defense. Even though the Vikings were still without the virus-weakened Stephano Jones, who should be back in uniform sometime soon, they managed to win the battle of the boards, 36-32. Sophomore Sean McNamee and freshmen Joel Benson and D.J. Cooper also contributed solid minutes.

Not a pretty win, but a good, tough win in the face of a lot of adversity (although some of that adversity was self-administered). For a team that's had to fight through devastating attrition issues, the players that Paul Brenegan has had available to put on the floor have really come through for him so far. The freshmen in particular have been surprisingly solid. And one of them, Roshawn Russell, has certainly been all that and a lot more. If he doesn't get CCIW Player of the Week for this performance, there ought to be an investigation. ;)
