So yeah.  Spinning class is not so easy.  I'm not sure when feeling will return to my calves and legs, but hope it's by the time CCIW play starts.
I am good friends with a couple of folks from one of the best teams from the last Race Across America, and I very quickly noticed that cyclists have the most ridiculous legs/body fat %/nutrition regiment, etc. of any group of athletes I know. On the plus side you probably won't rupture an achilles tendon. :P

I don't know if anyone has noticed this or not, but Wheaton has won every game so far this season with double digits. They probably have more 20+ point wins than other team in D3 as well. Through the 29th (looking at the CCIW stats page) their average point margin is 21.8 points, which is #2 in the country.  That's simply ridiculous.

Looks like we have a pretty good chance of getting #1 this coming week. I guess it has a vague chance of going back to Wash U, or staying with Platteville, or going to St. Thomas with their DII win. Not that a huge target like that going into a CCIW schedule wouldn't be fun, but I am okay with any of those outside shots. ::)

Impressive record for the CCIW!

What is USCAA?

Happy New Year to all!

2009 should be a great year for CCIW basketball!
I'm thinking 3 teams in the D3 tourney this year!

Personally, I'm fine with #2. Either way it's a big target.

I would be interested in hearing a bit more about Grinnell, particularly how they run their offense. It sounds like they have a fairly unorthodox way of doing things, to say the least. Do they forgo defense in hopes of outscoring the other team? Their scores remind me of the semi-pro leagues we have here in Grand Rapids that are simply offensive shootouts.

Comparing rates between NP and MU is an apples to apples "argument."  That is, both teams have languished in the bottom half of the tough CCIW for a while.

That was a quote by me, actually. You messed up the formatting. Titan Q would never use a smiley. :P

Grinnell is quite infamous for their style of play. They are unfondly known as "The Circus" around DIII. Basically, they don't play defense minus an occasional attempt to hack the ball away, and crash boards. Their goal is more or less to shoot 3pters because they think that makes more sense statistically. You seriously see an open guy on the inside passing the ball back beyond the arc for a three attempt.

They run their opposing teams hard, and subsitute players like every minute or two, since that's why the hacking for steals and intense pressure matters less.

It's some fugly basketball.

My personal favorite play is the one where they stand in a circle under the basket for an inbounds play, and run around in a little tight circle. At some cue by the inbounds passer, the guys all break out into a star toward the arc, and whoever is open gets in inbound pass for a trey. It's so weird looking it's laugh out loud worthy.

The current team is particularly interesting because the coach's son is on the team and his dad is constantly changing the stats after the game to make sure he has more assists.

Incidentally, the reason this game existence surprises me the most is because most people are under the impression that Harris has disliked Grinnell ever since we were posed to make a great playoff run, but our star player got hurt in the playoffs against them and we ended up bowing out the next round against Wash U.

If you go to the game, visit a local coffee house called "The Saint's Rest" and say hi to the owner for me.

I laughed just reading about that play. Sounds a bit ridiculous, but entertaining. I'm as surprised as you are that Wheaton is playing them. Hopefully we get out alive  ;)

And my apologies on the quote April, I was a little too quick on the editing.

Happy 2009!

There is an entire thread on the General Basketball board devoted to 'The System'.

re: Grinnell... I don't have any stats to back this up, but I've heard discussion of the "Grinnell effect," where a team that plays Grinnell loses the next game they play... largely because they're tired from trying to keep up with the Pio's.  Don't know if it has been "proven" or if it is just an excuse for losing after you play Grinnell... but I've heard the discussion in years past.

Happy New Year!

How do people see Wheaton's game vs. Grinnell going? Will Wiele's absence hurt much? I don't know much about Grinnell's system, so... will our guards or our big guys be likely to have huge games?

And Wheaton's single-game scoring record is 131 (vs. Grinnell). Is it possible we break that this time?

speaking of records, looks like raymond will break the career freethrow and 3point record for wheaton. points seems a bit out of reach, he'd need almost 900 this season.
