The CCIW season begins tonight with a single game, North Park @ Augustana. The most striking thing about this game is the imbalance in experience between the two teams. Augie is the most veteran team in the league, while NPU is the most inexperienced. Here's a comparison between the two in terms of minutes and games played, using the five likely starters and the five reserves who are most likely to be used:

NPU playerminutesgames  AC playerminutesgames
Roshawn Russell     380    11  Matt Pelton  1,473    58
Clayton Cahill     302    15  Jordan Delp  1,623    75
Issa Avery     127      9  Alex Washington  1,412    66
Nick Williams  1,504    60  Chandlor Collins  1,416    72
Phil Schniedermeier      69      8  Justin Bertrand     505    40
NPU STARTERS  2,382   103  AC STARTERS  6,429   311
Ryan Beigie     187    10  Brian DeSimone     178    10
Sean McNamee     325    39  Brett Wessels     988    44
D.J. Cooper     111      8  Mike Avallone     378    29
Joel Benson     135    11  Kyle Nelson       86      8
Mike Ventura     890    68  Bryant Voiles     157    10
NPU TOTAL   4,030   239  AC TOTAL  8,216   412

The minutes and games for Sean McNamee include his Lake Forest totals last season, and the minutes and totals for Brett Wessels include his Iowa totals as a sophomore.

I thought this would be a tough one for EC based on a couple earlier scores...

UW-Platteville 66
Anderson 64

Wash U 70
Anderson 68

I assumed the Bluejays would find a way to pull it out though.

Anderson is a good team. The Ravens (9-3) lost by two apiece to UW-Platteville and Wash U. This was certainly not a shocker, although Elmhurst (9-2) has to have been considered the favorite. The 'jays must be disappointed in dropping a game that they were positioned to win; they were stymied on seven of their last ten possessions.

AU's 5'10 senior guard Mike Russell went wild, scoring 30 points.

Ruch had 16, Strzemp and Burks had 15 apiece for the 'jays.

Millikin's opponent in the opening round of the Christopher Newport Captains Shootout in Newport News, VA this afternoon, the York (NY) Cardinals, might be the most internationally-oriented D3 team I've ever seen. Three of their starters are foreign-born: Nahum Verna is from Haiti, Marcel Esonwune is from Nigeria, and Huntley Pinnock is from Jamaica. I guess it makes sense, because the neighborhood of Queens in which York College is located, Jamaica, has a very heavy immigrant population.

Millikin (8-1) was undressed today by York (NY), as the Cardinals cruised to an easy 88-68 win. The Big Blue's three-week layoff probably hurt them coming out of the gate, as the Cardinals broke out to a quick 11-0 lead. But after the two teams exchanged three points (MU's the traditional way, YC's via a trey), the Cardinals never relinquished their double-digit lead again, and in fact had the lead up over 20 for much of the second half. Millikin never really made a run in this game.

Tunde Ogunleye led the Decaturites with 19 points, while Robert Burton added 12. Joscar Demby led MU in rebounds with six. Millikin's defense was exposed pretty badly, as YC shot 58% from the field and 63% from downtown. The Cards outrebounded the Big Blue, 38-26, and had 24 turnovers to MU's 20.

This loss had to have been pretty bitter for Marc Smith and Co., as York (NY) came into the game sporting a 2-10 record, with one of those two wins being a triumph over mighty Lancaster Bible. Plus, YC is currently 0-2 in the CUNYAC, one of the weakest leagues in D3. Tomorrow Millikin will play the loser of the Christopher Newport Captains Shootout opening-round nightcap between Maryland Bible and host CNU. Maryland Bible beat the Captains earlier this season by three.

This is a shame, since Millikin came within 38 votes of cracking the d3hoops.com Top 25 for the first time in its history in the last poll. I strongly doubt that the Big Blue will get that close to sniffing the Top 25 again this season.

U. of Chicago fell by 4 today to MSOE, dropping the Maroons to 0-11.  Unbelievable.  Next up - at home, vs Wash U (1/10).

A tip of the cap to the Big Blue, but that bubble was due to burst.

If Chicago ends their nightmarish start with a win in that game, we may be in for another totally wacky year! ;)

Agreed, but getting de-pantsed by a 2-10 CUNYAC team is not exactly how I foresaw Millikin being brought back to Earth.

Stranger things have happened. Is it too early for me to dish out the ol' "Throw out the records when these two archrivals play!" announcer's cliche?

On the season, Grinnell's opponents are averaging 105.6 points per game, and just over 2 made 3's per game.

;D

Yeah, I knew those Top 25 voters were giving too much attention to those CCIW teams!
