By the way Dennis, congratulations on your meteoric rise from the depths of Karma Sheol.  There's a lot of love around here somewhere.

All good points about the Sean Johnson/Andy Wiele situation.  In my opinion, as big of a blow as it would be to IWU to lose Johnson, Wheaton playing without Wiele would be more significant.  A few reasons...

1) IWU can come closer to replacing Sean Johnson's production/role than Wheaton can to replacing Wiele's.  In 29 minutes per game, Sean Johnson is averaging 13.2 ppg and is 23-54 (.426) from 3.  In 15 minutes per game, 6-5 freshman shooting-guard Jordan Zimmer is averaging 8.0 ppg, and is 23-42 (.548) from 3.  Sean Dwyer (5.2 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 3.8 apg, 2.6 A:TO), Johnson's likely replacement in the starting lineup, would bring another point-guard to the floor and a terrific perimeter defender.  And IWU has some good players to come off the bench and help at the 2, like senior Jordan Morris and sophomore Matt Schick.

2) As far as I know, Wheaton does not have any option on the bench for replacing Andy Wiele's production (19.0 ppg, 9.4 rpg, .659 FG) at the 5.  If they did, I don't think they would have gone back to starting 3 guards when Wiele went down (guard Andrew Jahns has replaced Wiele in the starting lineup as opposed to a big guy).  Think of the difference for IWU in guarding Wheaton with 6-8 Andy Wiele (19 points per game down low) in there vs Carlwell at the the 5.

3) Wiele's absence might create some matchup issues for Wheaton in guarding IWU.  Starters would be:

G Raymond, 6-3
G Jahns, 6-2
G Panner, 6-3
F McCrary, 6-6
F Carwell, 6-7

G Rosenkranz, 6-0
G Johnson , 6-1 (or Dwyer)
F Koschnitzky, 6-6
F Sexauer, 6-7
C Chamernik, 6-5

As a Titan fan, I'd like the matchup of 6-7 Doug Sexauer and 6-5 (and very strong) Brett Chamernik vs 6-6 freshman McCrary and 6-7 Carwell.  With 6-8/235 Wiele in there, Wheaton matches up much better with the Titans in the low post.

6-6 freshman John Koschnitzky (9.6 ppg, 4.5 rpg) would be guarded by a player 3 inches shorter most of the night.  John is as good in the low post as he is facing the basket (maybe better), so the Titans might be able to post him up on that smaller defender.

And Wiele's absence, and the resulting smaller Wheaton lineup across the board, should give IWU an advantage on the boards.

Don't get me wrong – IWU would miss Johnson tremendously.  He is a very tough kid who plays very well in big games (see CCIW results last year).  For IWU, he is the guy who wants the ball in his hands in crunch time.  He was the same way his senior year of high school...even with a D1 player in the same backcourt (Matt Roth, Indiana U.).  He was very good for IWU last year as a freshman.

Q, I'll respect a secret ballot if you prefer, but I'm curious: are you one of the three that still has Platteville #1?

Nope.  I voted for someone other than UW-Platteville for the first time this year.  My Top 5 was:

1 Wheaton (Ill.)
2 St. Thomas
3 UW-Platteville
4 Washington U.
5 Capital

It was a very difficult ballot.  I'm beginning to think we have 9 or 10 fairly even teams at the top.  I don't see a UW-Stevens Point 2004/2005 type team out there...or anything close to it really.

Mr. Ypsi

I'd agree with your top four (though I'm glad I didn't have to choose the order of 3 and 4 this week!), but it may take me a while to forget Capital's 29-point loss to Wilma! :D

I talked to two coaches who have seen Capital recently, and also about that loss, and I feel pretty good about them moving forward.

If NPU doesn't get Williams back in uniform, this season will degenerate into an absolute nightmare for the Park.

I hate to tell you this, Sager, but it was you who told all of us Viking fans to take a chill pill earlier in the week.  Williams may have been practicing, but...I can't share any more than that.  Just hope for the best.

Augie is on a trimester schedule, and their mid term finals are Feb. 16-19.

Final from St. Louis:

Grinnell 163
Fontbonne 145

Gotta be really tough to swallow scoring 145 and losing by 18.

petemcb

Carthage up only by 2 at the half over 2-16 TIU.  Steve D. has 18.

petemcb

Carthage ekes out a 4 point win over TIU.  Steve D had 27 and Fendley had 22.

You took the words right out of my fingertips.  Holy Karma.

I think the key matchup this Wednesday for the Thunder vs. the Insurance university is the fans.  Since the students have not returned I believe the age of fans for both sides attending will be as close as any time since the gereratric green weenies have been following their state farm recruits. ;D  Also the promise of free food for the first 200 older Wheaton fans should have them lining up in droves. :)

The lack of any real news from my fellow North Park posters leads me to believe that the situation is not good....I could be wrong here, just a hunch.  But as I said when Williams was first missing from the lineup, I would not be surprised if we have seen the last of him.

That's not based on any "inside information", nor is it a case of me making a judgement about the young man.  It just feels like that is the unfortunate direction this North park basketball season has been heading for a while now.
