This board is not as cerebral as Sager used to claim it was.  Debbie Harry?  WTF.

T2K,

The charm of CCIW Chat (regardless of that bureaucratic new name ;)) has always been that Spinoza and Dumb and Dumber[/i] are equally welcome.

And equally challenged.

sac's inner monologue

"dude, you can't ask that question. <pause>  Yeah, but, he's begging for it.........I know, I know but come on its too easy........exactly.  We have to do it man.............alright, but be nice about it........no promises"

<ahem>    Which one are you Mr. Y?

Good question, young man!

Mr. Y chose the particular comparison because HE was the source of the Spinoza quote.

On the other hand, whether he is Dumb or Dumber depends on which day you talk to Mrs. Y. :P

Viking Mike

Hey... how about we start talking about basketball?     I hear there is a huge game at King Arena tomorrow.

Hopefully the Augie Faithful (students on break/alumni) will show up to support the Vikings tomorrow in Wheaton.  The Vikes have some work to do to show that they are contenders, and not pretenders,  for the CCIW title.  There performance in Kenosha last Saturday was less than inspiring.   I would like to see Augie play a little more aggressively on offense, similar to their intensity on defense.  It seems like they are so patient on offense that they often appear timid and afraid to take the shot.  We have 5 guards who can shoot from outside.  Everyone, including Carthage, expects Augie to go inside with the rock.   It would be nice to see our big guys kick it out more often to make these sagging defenses pay.  Also, with Collins and Bertrand under the basket, we could afford to throw up a few more shots and create points off of our off. rebounding.  The other key to tomorrows game is for the Vikes to create turnovers and get their fast break going.  I'm hoping Wheaton has not seen a defense this year like Augie's pressure defense!

Anyone have an opinion on the game???

Go Augustana!!!

I don't think Wheaton has seen on ball defense this season like they will see tomorrow night in King arena. But these are the same guys who have seen Augie for several years so I wouldn't put too much stock in the Thunder being "surprised" by the level of defense Augie will play. The bigger question is the matchups. I think Wheaton will struggle with Collins and Bertrand underneath. But I also think theywill pass the ball well and won't have too much trouble with the pressure defense. I would expect this game to be close and if Wheaton's guards can shoot a decent percentage they should win. If they don't, I don't expect too many offensive rebounds and they will struggle.

Augustana certainly presents the toughest challenge of the season for Wheaton thus far. Wheaton has not faced a defensive-minded, grind it out type of team like the Vikes all season. The things that makes Augustana so scary is their depth and balance. They have seven players averaging 7 or more points a game, and no one averaging more than 11. There is no Kent Raymond-like player on this team. Wheaton needs a great defensive effort from everybody.

On the flip side, Wheaton is going to need to be fairly balanced in order to win. I have a hard time seeing Raymond going for 30+ against a team like Augustana. Guys like Jake Carwell and Andrew Jahns are huge keys for Wheaton tomorrow night.

Wheaton should have Andy Wiele tomorrow, though only on a limited basis. I am looking forward to the game and hopefully a similar result to Augustana's last visit to King Arena.

In Augie's close games this year (decided by less than 10 points), they are 3-3.  Four of those games, they score less than 60 points.  The other two games, against Simpson and Wash U, were games 1 and 3.  They seem to be more of a grind it out team when the game is tight, as you say Mike, but that might be too small of a sample.  There are plenty of times where they score more than 80 (6).
My point is this.  If Raymond continues his 30+ points a game trend (does the Grinnell game really count toward a trend like that?), I think it will be hard for Augie to keep up.  They have enough other scorers to fill out the point total without an effective Wiele (Panner with 10+, and others).  If Augie contains Raymond, keeping him under 20, I think Augie controls this game.  I agree with Mike, that Raymond probably will not score more than 30, but I do see his assist total going up, and him being directly involved in more than 30+ points.
Who will primarily be guarding Raymond?  Is it a player that can be physical with him and withstand his "bullying"?

The element that makes Wheaton more effective this season overall is depth. Last season Kent totallly carried the team, which is why it eventually broke down against IWU and finally Hope. This season opponents are darned if they do and darned if they don't double down on Kent, Wheaton has the firepower to win. Add to that the energy that they bring to their defensive game and we are talking about a team that is more than just new and improved. Tonight will be a great game because Augustana always brings it on.

It may be too early in the day - but with winter storm warnings out, the wind picking up, the thermometer in negative degrees, and the wind chill dangerous - it may be that some of our precious games may be postponed.

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

I would think Wheaton wouldn't mind postponing this contest to get Wiele healthy. For the same reason I would think Augie wants to play tonight pretty badly.

I would agree that Wheaton has been more balanced this year, but in conference play, it is Raymond who has carried this team.  There are plenty of guys who can score, but beyond Wiele and Raymond, they don't really have anyone who can create on their own.  McCrary may develope that by the end of the season, but sometimes he disappears in scoring, like against IWU.  McCrary had 4 points in that game.

In the games beyond IWU, Wheaton has been very balanced in their scoring.  But what other game other than IWU has Wheaton really been tested?  None of those games are less than double digit wins.  If Augie plays their standard brand of defense, Wheaton is going to have a hard time to score, especially inside.  Of course, if they do doulbe Kent, then that balanced scoring will be there, because Wheaton will find the open man.

How many teams really have anybody that can "create their own shot". I would think this is a rarity for D3. There are probably a bunch of top teams that have 1 guy and the best teams may have 2 but, really, how many teams have that go to guy that can creat a shot? Stevie D and Raymond. Does Augie? Delp is probably the closest thing or maybe collins/bertrand inside. IWU has Chamerink and Sexauer who can create in the post and their guards can penetrate to force double teams and easy passes. NCC: maybe Rogers and Barringer? Elmhurst has Ruch and Burks. NPU has Nick Williams?

It seems to me offenses in D3 center around trying to break down the integrity of the defense to create open looks rather than clear it out and let a guy create off pick and roll etc. Others may know better than me on this.

Here's the game preview for IWU/Carthage in the Kenosha News today.  I had no clue those great Carthage teams never started 3-0 in conference play, that was pretty darn surprising!
