Thanks all to the excellent recaps on the Wheaton / Augie game.

My observations:

1- My internet connection to Real Audio kept clicking in and out, and when Raymond got hurt it was so quiet that I thought I had lost the stream again.  The announcers were in stunned silence, too.

2- Any good coach will tell you that in a close game the first five minutes of the second half are key.  Wheaton exploded, Augie imploded.  Not only was Raymond making "Circus" shots and carrying his team offensively on his back, but the Crusaders stepped up their team defensive intensity as well, and I don't think Augie expected that, or recovered from that - there were a lot of Vi-Queen turnovers in those first five minutes.

3- Andy Wiele was impressive in the 2nd half after a month layoff.

4- One of the things that makes Augie so tough to come back on late in the game when they have the lead, is their achilles heal when they are on the wrong end of a lead in the final five minutes - no go to guy - and too much "team" basketball.  No one steps forward.  By the time Jordan Delp finally accepted that mantle, it was too late.

5- Wheaton's game at Millikin this Saturday is their biggest game of the season.  This will be their first contest of the season without their "Go To" All-American guy.  How well the other players are able to overcome that psychologically will determine their success until when and if Raymond is able to return to his All-American form.

6- Wheaton's placed some distance between themselves and their pre-season contender competition and they've already between their closest rivals, IWU and Augie, at home, but now their depth and how well they come together will deterimine if they can keep it going.  Road games await and the Crusaders are notorius for not bringing their fans along.

Just heard from Brett Marhanka that Wheaton/Augie is still on.  I guess Augie is determined to make it through any weather in the hopes of getting the game in pre-Wiele.
I don't like the way that sounds at all. As much as I obviously would prefer for this game to be postponed, I don't like the image of a program risking the safety of their players over a better shot at winning a basketball game. I know you're not speaking for the program Pete, but with every single other game cancelled, it has a weird feeling to it. Either way, I'll be praying for the kids safety. And I mean that in the most serious way possible.

How about you guys all move your schools to SoCal? It's been mid to high 70s and sunny all week...

April, maybe I needed a smiley face or something at the end of my post.  I was kidding.  The Wheaton/Augie game is not the only one happening.  NPU and Elmhurst are playing, and looking out my office window at this point the sun is quite visible and the roads are fine.  It's cold and getting colder.  That's all.  I was not suggesting that Augie would put their entire program at risk to squeeze a game in before the anticipated return of Wiele.

one of the considerations for this is the condition of the roads - Augie can come east on the east-west tollroad almost right to the Wheaton campus (just about two hours).  Both Millikin and IWU (a little louder) have to traverse I55, a notorius winter interstate - further IWU would have to traverse the entire CHicago area to get to Kenosha - (which begs the obvious questions of why downstate schools are scheduled to play mid-week in Kenosha anyway).

Usee seems to be a nice guy and I agree with him 99.5% of the time but I'm sorry if I was a little more sensitive to this matter.

You obviously don't read all of my posts!  8)
I agree with Usee about 5.99% of the time!  ;D
Just kidding of course!  I never agree with Usee!  ;D

IWU has lost starting center, and lone senior rotation member, Brett Chamernik to injury...

I assume 6-6 sophomore Edmond O'Callaghan will replace him in the starting lineup.

(Disregard the "postponed" in the headline - that was from yesterday.)

This is a definite blow to the Titans. In limited action against North Central, O'Callaghan looked like a deer in headlights, inconspicuous in the offensive flow, and totally lost on defense, committing 4 fouls in about 6 minutes. Chamernik is a nice low post weapon, and presents a solid defensive presence.

But at Wheaton, he had 11 pts and 8 rebounds, shooting 5-6 from the field, in 24 minutes.  Like the rest of these IWU players right now, you just don't know what you're gonna get.

I have heard through the grapevine that Kent Raymond was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain. I don't know the degree of the sprain, but it will probably be at least a two week thing. But Kent is going to come back as soon as he can--he doesn't want to miss what actually is his last season at Wheaton.

Gregory Sager

if it's a high ankle sprain, then you're looking at a lot more than two weeks of isolating the leg and keeping it out of action.

I'm no doctor, and certainly haven't seen Kent Raymond but if it's really a high ankle sprain I think you're looking at at least a month...he'll probably be able to walk on it in 2 weeks but to play basketball? Wow.....I don't know about that. Maybe he will..but....high ankle sprains haunt athletes for a whole season usually.

Final from Merner Fieldhouse

Cardinals may be for real.

NCC 66
MU 55

Drennan had 19, Raridon and Rogers 11 apiece, and Barringer 10 for the Cards, who were never behind in the game. MU was led by Burton and Bright with 11 apiece, while Patrick contributed 10. Ogunleye was held to six points.

Wesleyan eked out a 73-70 win over Carthage in the Toolshed that went back-and-forth for the last fourteen or so minutes of the game. Sounds like it was incredibly exciting.
