Q, I guess then its my opinion that, with the players on the floor that night, if Wheaton had rebounded better (27-39) or shot a better percentage (44%) they would likely have won by 20.

I remember trying to calculate this last year using CCIW-only stats.  I ran into a problem in that 3 schools do not list conference-only numbers within their stats (Wheaton, Carthage, and North Central).  I wonder if it would be difficult for those schools to add CCIW-only stats online?

Doesn't the CCIW website have a conference only stats page? for all teams.

FWIW,
The formula for estimating possessions is:

FGA-Off Reb+TO+(FTAx.475)

The fact that each team's possessions as compared to its opponents' are very close (+/-.5 possessions per game or less) leads me to believe it's pretty accurate.

Dan, that is just great work.  Thanks for taking the time to do it.  Points per possession seems to be the most accurate measurement of offensive and defensive efficiency.  Per the above, Elmhurst and Wheaton are the league's "best" offensive teams, while Augustana and Wheaton are the best defensively.

I wonder if the CCIW league office can add offensive and defensive Pts/poss to the stats on CCIW.org?  Seems like they have access to all the necessary data.

Thanks Q,

I think using CCIW only games would be the most accurate way of doing it also, since everyone would have played the same opponents, but with most teams having played only five league games I just decided to use overall numbers. For the CCIW site to add these stats, I think they'd have to figure it manually, since to my knowledge, the StatCrew program doesn't include it. It shouldn't be a problem for the individual schools to add the Conference/Overall breakdown to their stats, though. I believe it's just a matter of clicking a box or two in the options menu. I'll try and update these from time to time.

Yes, but the CCIW.org stats don't include all of the necessary categories to calculate Points per Possession.

Also, as far as individual stats go, the site only lists category leaders.  So if you're looking for a certain player's stats in league play, you may not find it on the league's conference-only stats page.  Five CCIW schools have a conference-only boxcscore within their stats package.  For example, Millikin...

For whatever reason, Wheaton, Carthage, and NCC do not.  I suspect as Dan says, it is just a matter of those schools selecting that option within the software.

FYI wetn.org is testing a new HD beta 995k video webcast. From what I have already seen it is a wonderful improvement over the 350k. The downside is that if they keep it they will probably offer it as pay-per-view. So check out Wheaton vs. Elmhurst tonight on wetn.org

Time to head down to the "hanger" for the North Central-Carthage contest.

I think the NCC battle plan revolves largely around:
1. Slowing Stevie D down as much as possible as stopping him seems an impossibility.
2. Really concentrating on limiting Sean Fendley to several pts below his average.
3. Winning the battle of the boards, and not giving CC the opportunity for 2nd chance points.
4. Forcing 16-18 CC TOs.
5. Making an acceptable percentage of their free throws. At least 75 %

The Cards will need to do at least 3 of the above. If they can accomplish that, they have an excellent chance to defeat the Red Men.
We'll see how things work out!

Sorry to hear that Justin Bertrand like Kent Raymond has a high ankle sprain. It's tough to see 2 of the league's best players out of action for extended periods of time. Augie won without Justin tonight just as Wheaton did their first game without Kent, but the absence of such talent catches up wit a team as it did for Wheaton the last two games. Let's hope both of these young men are back on the court sooner than expected.

At essentially the half way point in the conference season only NPU is out of contention for the title. What a year.

At King arena, it was over at halftime. Greg summed it up on the "in game" board. Elmhurst shot 62% in the first half and not many were layups. Ruch had 2 fouls and sat most of the game and Wheaton is just punchless on offense without Raymond. They could not slow down the hot shooting jays and they were a pathetic 6-20 from the free throw line. The only good news is I saw Raymond walking without a boot or much of a limp so I would guess he is getting pretty close to playing. Wheaton won't make the CCIW tourney without him in my view. Let's hope he plays in Naperville Wednesday.

NPU dug itself yet another hole it couldn't climb out of. After being down at the half by seven, the Vikes fell behind by 15 with eleven minutes and change remaining. They pecked away at that lead and got it down to a three-point margin on three occasions in the last two and a half minutes of the game, but couldn't get any closer. Give the Big Blue credit for making the FTs down the stretch and playing clutch crunch-time ball in front of the home fans.

MU shot 56% (28-50) from the field, and I'm not sure how much that was due to good offense or poor NPU defense. The Big Blue connected on 5 of 9 treys and went 12-17 from the line. NPU shot a mediocre 44% (22-50), went 8-22 from downtown, and 16-19 from the line. The Vikings outrebounded the hosts, 27-23, and coughed up the ball 12 times to Millikin's 11.

Nick Williams led the way for North Park with 20 and 11, while Roshawn Russell contributed 18 points and six assists and DJ Cooper, playing most of the minutes for the still-injured Clayton Cahill, chipped in 15. Phil Schniedermeier was quiet tonight, which was disappointing in light of the lack of a strong inside game for MU. The Big Blue were led by Robert Burton and Mark Patrick, who had 19 apiece, while Corey Mitchell added 12.

Another bad night for NPU, as the Vikings go 0-fer in the first round-robin.

After looking at the CCIW standings before tonight, it looks like things are rather crowded at the top. It's going to be an interesting 2nd half. I'm going to enjoy listening in.

Down 50-48 with thirteen minutes and change remaining, Augie went on a 14-0 run over the next seven minutes, and was never seriously threatened again. Brett Wessels had a solid 23-point game, while Kyle Nelson and Matt Pelton, who both had big second halves, scored 13 apiece. Alex Washington added 10. The Titans, who made a nice first-half run to eliminate a 13-point Augie lead and who actually established a brief five-point lead of their own early in the second stanza, appeared to have run out of gas in the face of that relentless Doggie D. John Koshnitzky led IWU with 18, while Jordan Zimmer had 12 and Sean Johnson scored 11 (but on 16 shots from the field).
