I think part of Augie's problem is the CCIW is a lot better than a lot of us expected. At the start of the season many of us thought Augie, Elmhurst and Wheaton were going to be the top 3 teams. All 3 of those teams are still in the race, but many of us underestimated how good Carthage and NCC would be. There are 5 not 3 top conference teams this year. Then you have IWU and Millikin who have not been great but are still solid enough to be dangerous. But for Elmhurst's slip up at home against Millikin, they would pretty much control the race for 1st place. The injuries to Wheaton's two stars also brought them back to the pack, but Augie was not a beneficiary of Raymond's on the bench recovery period. Only North Park has failed to be competitive, and there is still a small chance they could pull an upset before the season ends.

I also think most folks expected Jordan Delp to be more of a force in his comeback season. He did save Augie's bacon in two early games that otherwise would have been ugly nonconference losses, but for most of the season he has not really been much of a factor in getting Ws on the board for Augie. Maybe tonight will be his night to be the determing factor in a must win game for Augie.

Late nite

Make sure all the bulbs are working on the scoreboard at the Hangar tonight---With the way these two teams defend the 3, it should be a high scoring shootout

Wesleyan has the leader in the majority of the statistical categories. Does this make them tonight's favorite in Naperville?

NCC will need to:
1. Score > 70 pts
2. Limit IWU's 3 attempts to < 13
3. Limit IWUs inside touches
4. Not let IWU outrebound them by more than 4
5. Hit at least 75 percent of their FTs

Whoops!--I'm a dummy---I mis-read AO's stats---But it does surprise me that IWU holds teams to a lower FG percentage than NCC

During Bosko's North Park years, he deployed a man-to-man defense a vast majority of the time.  These days preceded the three point shot.  (Maybe there was a year or two overlap.)  I prefer the man-to-man defense though it is rarely used these days.  I believe Bob Huggins' Cinci teams used it, but does anyone use it today?  I do not think anyone in the CCIW has used it for years, right?

On January 10 we had the same 4 matchups as tonight, and Elmhurst lost to Millikin in double overtime and Augustana fell to Carthage. North Central beat IWU by 7, and Wheaton topped North Park by 19. Any votes for which (if any) matchup(s) will go the other way tonight?

My vote goes for Augie beating Carthage in a big-time game for Augie's confidence and conference hopes.

I'll predict that all will be reversed except Wheaton/NPU.

Though the IWU/NCC reversal is a matter of hope over reason!  With the talent but extreme youth of the Titans, I expected problems early but thought they'd be as tough as anyone in the CCIW by February - so far, the improvement just doesn't seem to be there.

Markerson,

I am not an expert by any means but I do know that wheaton plays almost exclusively man to man defense as does augie. IWU played almost all mtm vs wheaton this year too.

Doesn't every team in the CCIW primarily play man-to-man defense?  What am I missing, Mark?

I think NPU is more like the Pittsburrgh Pirates than the Cubs. A once proud franchise (Clemente, Stargell et al.), which now seems permanently in the dumper. NPU was the top team in DIII for a number of years, including their multiple championships, so they definitely are not the Cubs. For that matter no CCIW team has as sorry a history as the Cubbies.

Titan Q

How bout Millikin sweeping Elmhurst?  What a league.

What a night in the CCIW!!! Huge surprises out of Decatur and Naperville even though I'm not very surprised about the final in Rock Island.  I think Wheaton sent the message loud and clear with their play tonight that they are back on track and firing on all cylinders.  The took the food off the throttle a little bit early in the second half but once again reestablished their rhythm and took the game back.  Big night for Pflederer and Jahns, which was nice to see Jahns get his confidence back.
You win some, you lose some, and sometimes it rains.
