The winner of tomorrow nights game between Wheaton and Elmhurst will almost certainly get the MOP as well. To the victors go the spoils.

It will be an interesting last 2 weeks. I like Wheaton's chances, although they have a tough schedule. None of the remaining teams have faced the Thunder at full strength. Ironically, the game I am most worried about is @IWU.

Wheaton will be on a mission to avenge their 3 losses against Elmhurst, Carthage and NCC. The IWU game is their only victory and if the Thunder don't go down to Bloomington with a chip on their shoulder, prepared for a war they will most certainly lose.

So far, no team has qualified for the conference tourney with less than 8 wins. Does anyone feel this is the year a team with 7 wins will do so?

It is mathematically possible but I doubt 7 wins will get you in the CCIW tourney this year.  I'm sure it will happen some year.  I initially thought North Park could be a spoiler with all of their remaining games at home.  But IL Wesleyan and Millikin probably need to win out to get in like NCC did in 2007.  North Park could make things difficult for Elmhurst if they beat the 'Jays on Saturday.  Especially if Elmhurst losses at home to Wheaton on Wednesday.  The remaining schedule for Elmhurst is not easy.

If the home teams won the remaining 15 CCIW regular season games this year, 7-7 would still only get you 5th place.  I know.......it is highly unlikely that the home teams could win every remaining game.

Last year, if Elmhurst lost their next to last regular season game to NCC, they would have tied Carthage for 4th place with a 7-7 record.  I'm not sure who would have won the tiebreaker but a 7-7 team would have made it.

Sorry for the long post.  My guess is not this year.  But it is not impossible.

My question is will a CCIW team win 10 regular season games this year?

While Wheaton struggled with IWU last year, they have won games down at IWU in the past.  The big difference between this upcoming game and the first game of the season is the presence of Wiele, who makes his biggest impact on the game in the rebounding department.  Wheaton was badly outrebounded by IWU, and I don't think it would have been as close of a game as it was had Wiele been present with his size and rebounding.  IF Wheaton wins and plays well tomorrow against Elmhurst, they will build their confidence even more.  In their three losses, they just seemed to be playing very tight, and even timid on offense.  I think the chip on their shoulder for IWU can be thought of as last year, where they went 0-3 against IWU.  I am sure Harris will do a good job of keeping this team focused on one game at a time.  It certainly seemed like Wheaton wasn't looking past NPU to Elmhurst on Saturday, especially in that first half.

I know Wheaton will be very motivated for tomorrow night against Elmhurst. They lost in their own gym without Raymond and didn't look good doing it. I am sure Ben Panner doesn't want any more memories of Burks burying a jumper in his mug and yelling "He can't guard me". Maybe even Detlef Strzemp will have an off night.  ;D

Sorry for the long post.  My guess is not this year.  But it is not impossible.

Had there been a tourney then, as recently as 2004 a 7-7 team was all alone in 4th place.  In the 16 years since the CCIW had its current membership, teams would have made the tourney with 7-7 records in 1993, 1998, and 2000 (though these years there were also one or more 7-7 teams who would NOT have made it).  In 1995 and 2002, 6-8 teams tied for 4th, so someone with a losing record would have made the tourney.

But I'd agree that 8-6 will be necessary this year.

titanfan

Any math I've been doing to see what IWU needs to do to make the tourney includes them winning their final four games and going 8-6.  There are no scenarios I've found so far where they make it at 7-7.  Now, if IWU, MU, and NPU win all of their remaining games (excluding each other, of course), it could change that situation to allow a 7-7 team in this year.  However, the chances are very rare.  8-6 looks necessary!

In Wheaton's game against Carthage they held the Redmen to 23% shooting in the first half. Since then and up until tipoff last night their opponents fg% by half has been.

55% (2nd half Carthage)
63%(Elmhurst)
50%(Elmhurst)
55% (NCC)
57% (NCC)

Last night against Augie in Rock Island:

37%(1st half)
28%(2nd half)

Since Raymond and Wiele have been playing a full slate of minutes the Thunder have won every game and held their opponents FG% to:

Augie 32.1%
Millikin 45.3%
NPU 41.7%

In fact, in all 18 wins Wheaton has held their opponent under 50% for the game and in their 3 losses their opponents have shot over 50% for the game. (Actually Carthage shot 55% in the 2nd half and only 23% in the first half so 40%)

I think if Wheaton can keep Elmhurst to under 50% tomorrow night they win easily. Their average is 50% and they #1 in scoring offense in the conference. To me, that's the key to the game (oh yea, make your free throws this time)

Out of the top 5, I actually think Elmhurst has the most favorable remaining schedule, little as that means.

As for 10 wins....Im going to rally behind my Jays and say Elmhurst is going to win 10 games.  I believe they can at least win 3 out of their remaining 4.

HUGE game for North Central and Carthage tomorrow night up in the W portion of the CCIW.
I'm sensing that the winner has the inside track on becoming the 4th qualifier for the conference tourney. The Cardinals can either lament the fact that they would be in 1st place if they hadn't slipped up against Millikin and Wesleyan, teams I'm sure they figure they should have beaten especially after taking care of both in the 1st round of conference play, or they can step up and stay in the midst of the hunt for a conference tourney berth.

OK D3HOOPS POSTERS---

The above post, obnoxious and controversial as it is (not), has resulted in another -K. I can certainly appreciate this happening in the case of either a senseless (name calling, racial slur etc) post, one in which you have your facts entirely incorrect, in a case where you incorrectly analyze a game which you attended, or in an instance where you make wild assumptions without providing any research/thoughts to back up your assumptions. However, when either hate, jealousy, or just downright ignorance enter the equation then its time to make a change. I understand that sometimes you'll get dinged for having the audacity to even suggest little Johnny, little Mike, or little Billy isn't the best thing the CCIW has seen for years, let alone an All-American. My experience has been in such cases, the person doing the smiting will ding you once and then let it go. But when a hateful coward continues to sneak on in the middle of almost each day or night over a 2-3 week period to smite you for no apparent reason other than hatefulness, then this exercise ceases to be enjoyable and makes you wonder why you are here. Accordingly, I'm sensing AndOne's days here are numbered. I realize no one poster is bigger than the board, and no tears will be shed over the loss of any regular information about anything having to do with one of the conference teams. Hopefully another NCC basketball supporter will step up and continue from where its looking like I might soon be leaving off. Peace,
AO

You are kidding right? I am a frequent reader of this blog and find most of the posters here to be thoughtful and insightful in their postings. Why would you let something as trivial as this affect you? You are right no poster is bigger than the board, but if you proceed with your implied plans, you have made whom ever has dinged you "bigger" then what you have provided.

Me thinks this has been the work of the anti-CCIW crowd out there on other boards. There are some haters out there due to the fact that this year we rule and everyone else drools!  ;D Stick around AO, if King Dennis can come back from the land of negative double digits to positve double digits, you can certainly regain any momentum lost by the Karma trollers.

It has been a while and I usually reserve this for the football board but, this is a job for the Karma-Chameleon........+K for everyone on the board for the last few pages!! Come on Mugsy, sing it with me......
