Congratulations to all of the 2009 All-CCIW selections.

Another example of how senior-dominated the league was this year. Eight seniors and a fourth-year junior on the first two teams.

Lord knows I'm not a Wheaton fan, but under the heading of fair play and giving credit where its due, I saw Kent Raymond make a play Sat night against NCC that, while not flashy or spectacular, illustrates his special talent. At one time, Kent got his defender on his hip and drove the right side of the lane. As he neared the basket, another NCC defender came across the lane to help as he should. He appeared just as Kent left his feet and was about to let go of his layup attempt. The defender also went airborne with his hand up. Raymond twisted somewhat in the air and let go a shot off the glass. At the instant he let the ball go, you could see he realized it wasn't going in due to his body position being altered at the last instant by the NCC defender. He seemed to sense the shot would be long and carom off the glass and come off on the other side of the basket. As soon as his feet hit the floor, he spun across the lane, caught the ball as it banked off the glass, and possibly a bit of the rim, and laid it in from the left side of the basket. Pure hustle and instinct---2 of the attributes of a great player.

I'm thankful I've been able to witness most of the games he has played while at Wheaton.  Someone who doesn't see him on a regular basis might think that the play you described was a lucky one.  Well I can say that in every game he ends up doing something that just makes me just shake my head.

I've only seen him play twice but he's a hell of a good player.

Titan Q

I wonder why there are 16 all-conference players this year (6 on the 2nd team)?

I'm only speculating, but I'd guess that two players tied for 10th and 11th - and then they thought a 4-man 3rd team would look strange.

If Wheaton wins the tourney (no foregone conclusion), how good are its chances of hosting till the final four?

That's impossible to answer, because it's all contingent upon which four teams make the sectional that would include Wheaton.

Congrats to all the players who made the team!

* I'm surprised that Chandlor Collins beat out Ryan Burks for first team, but it's hard to discount the fact that Collins led the league in rebounding by a whopping 1.2 rpg.

* Roshawn Russell was more than qualified to make the All-CCIW team. However, I fully understand the reluctance of the coaches to include two players from an 0-14 team; moreover, I also understand (and sympathize with) the idea that it might've helped push Nick Williams down to third team.

* Why wasn't Chris Drennan a unanimous first-team selection? Which coach could've possibly voted otherwise?

In the past, the CCIW has had six third-teamers when there was a tie for fifteenth place on more than one occasion. There were six third-teamers in 1983-84 and again in 2006-07, and there may have been other years that I've forgotten that had similarly-constructed third teams. Given that, I suspect that Chuck is right that there was probably a tie for tenth place, necessitating a six-man second team.

My guess is that between the three players you  mentioned above there were some votes split for that first team spot.  I think you might have answered your question in your previus statement.  Or, maybe a coach tried to fill in the spots more by position, and with Collins and Ruch already there with the two guards, a coach thought that maybe a wing player like Burks should be first team.

While we'll probably never know for sure, your speculation of a Burks-over-Drennan vote for the final spot sounds plausible to me.

I happen to have that information---

In the first round of balloting Pelton, and Ogunleye tied for 10th place. The coaches naturally voted again, but nobody was willing to change their vote to break the tie so it was decided to put 6 players on the team and then have the 3rd team comprised of the players who received the 11th through 16th most votes.

Drennan received more votes than did Burks.

Obviously - that's why one is first team, the other second! :P

We were speculating about Greg's 'disbelief' that Drennan wasn't unanimously first team.

Congrats to Kent Raymond for being named MOP

Raymond is a game changer.  Last year vs. Lawrence he and Ryan Kroeger put on a show of talent and grit.  It's unfair that they had to play in Round #1 but that is the scourge of being in the Midwest.

Probably the same coach who did not vote for 1st Team All-Americans Adam Dauksas and Keelan Amelianovich.
