Looks like Wheaton and Elmhurst are in the dance. . . . not other CCIW men's teams this year.

Lady Titans are rolling . . . IWU to play Carthage for the women's tourney championship and DIII tourney bid tomorrow at 2 p.m.

Gregory Sager

Elmhurst isn't in a position where it can take a Pool C bid for granted.

I'm not saying that the season will definitely end for the 'jays if they lose tomorrow night, but the fact of the matter is that a lot of teams at or near the top of their regional rankings seem to be tumbling over the last 24 hours. While the 'jays probably still have at least a decent chance at a Pool C berth if they lose tomorrow, I'm sure that Mark Scherer will tell his team before the game that they'll have to earn their way in with a win.

Late nite

Another disappointing finish to the season for the offensively-challenged Vikings---Missed layups, turnovers and defensive lapses are common place in almost all of their close losses---It's one thing to get beat by the 3 pointer, but it's another to get beat by 3 pt SET SHOTS!!!---3 TIMES!!!---Nobody even close to the shooters down the stretch---Giovanine needs to go back to the drawing board and re-evaluate his strategies and decisions in late season meaningful games---Too many early exits from tournaments the past 4 years after impressive regular seasons---Washington, Collins and Bertrand see their careers end from a seat on the bench during the final minute of the ballgame---Unbelievable

Gregory Sager

Elmhurst 59, Augustana 53

Brent Ruch: 14 pts, 8 rebs, 4 blocks
Rob Strzemp: 14 pts
Ryan Burks: 13 pts

38% FG (20-53), 31% trey (5-16), 93% FT (15-16)

Jordan Delp: 13 pts

Chandlor Collins: 10 pts, 20 rebs

34% FG (21-62), 31% trey (5-16), 60% FT (6-10)

Augie won the rebounding battle, 44-29 (no wonder, considering the night that Collins had on the boards), but turned the ball over 17 times to EC's 12.

That was not a pretty game between Elmhurst and Augie tonight, but it seems that all Elmhurst/Augie games simply come down to who makes good on their chances at the end.

I don't think I've been so confident of a player not being able to be scored upon than I was of Brent Ruch in the final minutes of tonight's game.

Burks came up with the big shots when Elmhurst needed them and I cannot say enough about Robert Strzemp's co-game high 14 point contribution, capped off by a massive three late in the game.

The Elmhurst seniors willed the team to a win tonight, it was almost storybook type stuff.  ;)

and you must give credit where its due to Chandlor Collins for his CCIW Tournament record setting 20 boards.  Well done!

I am not that worried about the CCIW not getting a Pool C bid.

There are too many other ugly losses out there that are dropping teams in their respective regions.  MW#3 Elmhurst should lose to MW#1.  That is the result that we expect.

The South Region took heavy hits today. BV lost in the first round.  The East and Atlantic Regions took ugly losses.  The bottom of the Great Lakes lost.

The committee will almost have a fresh sheet of paper after the remainder of the tourney games.

Greek Tragedy

If Wheaton wins tomorrow, Elmhurst will be sitting at the table first for the Midwest Region.  This region is a lot stronger than last year's Atlantic Region where no one got a Pool C bid.  I think they are a lock.

Mr. Ypsi

Since Wheaton is #1, Elmhurst is #3 (and Wash U, already an AQ, is #2), if the CCIW does NOT get 2 teams in it almost certainly means that the Midwest region got zero C bids.  I just don't see that happening.

Just saw Tom's post; I concur that tomorrow's loser is a lock.

sac

The only way Elmhurst wouldn't be Pool C option #1 from the midwest is if something goofy in the "numbers" put Transylvania ahead of them in the final invisible rankings.......that only happens if Transy loses to Franklin....and since Wheaton's in-region record is way better than Franklin's I can't see that happening.

The real interesting part is who becomes Pool C #2 from the Midwest........the even more interesting part is we'll never see these final rankings.  yay! NCAA!

The Midwest Regional Advisory Committee (the group that has been making the regional rankings this year and will turn in the final rankings tomorrow):

Mike Zapolski, Augustana (chair)
Gary Grzesk, St. Norbert
Mike McGrath, U. of Chicago
Brad Nadborne, Manchester
Skip Noon, Wisc. Lutheran
Matt Rogers, Maryville (Mo.)
Mark Scherer, Elmhurst

Regardless of all the madness in conference tournaments so far (like the ODAC's top 3 seeds all losing before the championship game), I continue to feel that Elmhurst would be a Pool C lock should they lose tonight.

Outstanding point.  As Old School posted yesterday...

RED means they have lost, regular season/conference tourney is complete and they are Pool C eligible.

BLUE means they have won the Pool A bid and have been removed from the regional rankings.

If Transylvania beats Franklin at home tomorrow in the HCAC conference tournament title game, and Lawrence beats Grinnell, I think Augustana probably ends up as the Midwest's #2-rated Pool C team - Carroll and NCC lost yesterday too.  The Midwest committee will have to make that decision tomorrow, and it is a critical one.  To be discussed for a Pool C bid, you have to get to the table, and I do not see any Midwest Pool C candidate after the top 2 getting to the table.

If Augustana does end up the #2 Pool C candidate from the Midwest, Viking fans may not want to completely give up hope quite yet.  The odds would still be long, as most likely the Midwest's #2 Pool C candidate is going to be left sitting on the table from the time Elmhurst is put in (somewhere around Pool C slot #10 of 18) - or from the time Wheaton is put in, much higher, if that is the case - to the time Pool C #18 is selected.  But maybe at the national level they discuss the strength of the Midwest region this year (the region has been strong this year).

Also remember, last year the Midwest committee did a terrific job of giving the region its best chance to get 2 Pool C bids.  Wash U, which lost to Chicago one year ago today and did not win the UAA, was a lock as the Midwest's top Pool C candidate.  But in the final ranking, the MW committee made a very important decision - they ranked Wheaton ahead of IWU, even though IWU was 3-0 vs Wheaton.  As a Pool C candidate, IWU had no chance to get in - the in-region record (15-9) just was not competitive.  But Wheaton stood a fighting chance at the national level, so they ranked Wheaton ahead of IWU to give the region a fighting chance at another Pool C.  If they do the same this year (assuming Transy and Lawrence win tonight), they'll put Augustana in that slot.

Again, the odds are that the Midwest's #2 Pool candidate is not getting in, but there will at least be a faint heartbeat for that team.

(Transylvania losing to Franklin today would be the final knockout blow for Augie - they'd become that #2.)
