36 points, refs, home whistles, etc: How is the topic of 3 second violation non-calls not being discussed on here yet?  I'm surprised he didn't go for 60 when he spends half of each possession under the hoop.  If Wheaton got more foul calls, UWP got the benefit of not losing 50% of their possessions based on his camping in the lane on moving screens.

That being said, kudos to Wiele for manning up and playing a game and OT against the big boy.  He took his lumps and cheap shots from 42 and kept coming back.

I agree...while the 3 second call is hardly ever made,  Skemp took camping in the lane to a whole new level.  Give him credit, if it's not being called, take advantage of it.

I actually thought the game was handled pretty well.  I remember thinking after the game that it was pretty evenly called with some bad calls going both ways. However, I also thought that if I had been a UWP fan I would have been upset.  37 to 14 advantage in free throw is a lot.  Wiele played 40 minutes and only had one foul...he was fronting the post all night but you would think he would pick up more than one.

I really don't understand the complaining about three seconds in the lane.  Yes, he was posting up near the lane all night but yelling at the refs every time down the court to watch it is a little over the top.  He wasn't just sitting in the lane, he was actively moving trying to seal Wiele as the ball was swung around.

IMHO, the play of the night was Jahns three in OT to steal back the lead.  He is about as clutch of a player as they get, he has been for 2 years.  He has struggled from 3 all year and Wheaton needed a big shot he delivered.  Also, his two free throws at the end were both pure swishes.  I will admit I have been frustrated with his inconsitent play this year but he sure steps up when he is needed.

I think it works out well that Wheaton is on spring break this week...6 players played 25+ minutes with KRay, Panner, and Wiele all 40+.  They deserve a break!  Any reason Pflederer only played 7 minutes to Jahns 28?  Is is soley based on defensive ability or is there another factor?

I don't see anything in the rule that says as long as the player is moving and trying to get position, he can stay in the lane more than 3 seconds.

Section 9. Three-Second Rule
Art. 1. A player shall not be permitted to have any part of his or her body
remain in the three-second lane for more than three consecutive seconds
while the ball is in control of that player's team in his or her front court.
a. A team in control of the ball for a throw-in adjacent to a front-court
boundary line may not be called for a three-second violation.
Art. 2. Allowance shall be made for a player who, having been in the three second
lane for less than three seconds, dribbles or moves in immediately
to try for field goal.
a. The player shall not pass the ball instead of trying for goal.

When the guy who is camping is responsible for 55% of the other team's points, you'd like to see his [unfair] advantage taken away.  That he's moving the whole time he's in the lane doesn't change the fact that he is still in there for more than 4-5 seconds.  Wiele's got to front him, and if that takes place high enough/wide enough outside the lane, weakside defense can help with the over the top entry pass.  But when that pass happens in the lane, there is no weakside help, which results in plenty of extra uncontested layups.  His size 20's were rarely not in contact with some portion of blue paint.

But as pointed out, UWP got that advantage, Wheaton got the whistle.

Totally agree.  Jahns comes up clutch in March.

On the Plattville game...

- great crowd for Platteville. they did a great job and had lots of energy. you can really tell that its spring break, there is little student support for Wheaton. good local crowd though, and lots of kids. it was nice to see the wheaton players crowded by kids after the game. it was kind of ridiculous though, some older fans were asking us to sit down throughout the game, saying it was "rude". It's a NCAA playoff game!! maybe the best team to come to King Arena all season in maybe the best game, and we need to sit down??

Thunder---

In a word, YES!
I'm sure that even the other Wheaton fans posting here would agree that your youthful enthusiasm is no excuse for roguish behavior. Interference with other fans enjoyment of the game seems in opposition to the Christian principles of Wheaton and the doctrine of treating others as you would like to be treated. Would it have been impossible to enjoy the game from a seated position? I'm sure the "older fans" would excuse periodic standing on your part to cheer an especially exciting or important play. However, standing continuously or almost so at the expense of the "older fans" viewing and enjoyment is inexcusable. Don't forget, you might one day actually be one of those "older fans." Perhaps, due to various infirmities of their older age, they had difficulty standing.
Lastly, before you dismiss my ramblings entirely ask yourself what you would have done if the request had come from someone like Reverend Graham or President Litfin! I think your young butt would have been glued to your seat.

Is this a joke?

uh, Litfin had a reserved seat in the front row behind the scorers table. One that couln't be used for the first game (that he was clearly not in attendance). I think Billy G would have gotten a courtside seat too. It's a basketball game, not an opera. I have no problem with people standing up to support their team during it toughest test of the season.

CCIWers - Longtime lurker, infequent poster from MIAC land. I'm thinking of possibly making the trip down to Chicago this weekend for the UST-UPS tilt at Wheaton. Several questions for you all:

If air fares are equal, is it more more convenient to fly into O'Hare & drive out to Wheaton, or fly into Midway?

Doing a general map search tells me its about 30 miles from Midway to Wheaton?  Is this accurate?

What's the likelihood the games will sellout? In St.Paul this past weekend, tickets could be had, but the games were officially sold out each night in the 1,700 seat arena at St. Thomas.

Thanks!

I think Ohare is closer if you drive especially on friday afternoon as traffic from Midway won' t be good. If you come from Ohare I would take 294 south to 88/roosevelt road and take that all the way into wheaton. avoid 88 west if at all possible after 4pm Friday. You could also take North avenue west off of I294.

Tickets: I am not sure but I would think you will be able to get them. Wheaton students are on spring break and I am guessing ST Thomas and UPS won't travel with big groups. So unless WashU packes 1,000 people in there you should be able to get seats.

Pat Coleman

Each school should have its own allotment of tickets to sell. You should try to secure tickets through UST first. If not, surely UPS will return much of its allotment but those may well go on general sale first, rather than to another team directly.

I will add that I actuall prefer Midway airport because flights are not often delayed and the airport itself is quite manageable. But the drive to Wheaton is shorter and less traffic from Ohare. Public transportation is another story.

Thanks for the info.  I'm actually thinking of doing a last minute, expensive alternative & fly down on Saturday AM if UST wins on Friday night.  ::) ;D

I see. Then it doesn't really matter but O'hare is still probably a bit closer and more convenient.
